Cingular began offering (http://cingular.com/SLVR_iTunes) the Motorol SLVR S7 phone today. The Motorola SLVR attempts to address some of the issues (http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/business/13757150.htm) which had marred Motorola's first attempt at an iTunes-compatible phone -- the ROKR (http://guides.macrumors.com/ROKR_E1_Phone).
"It kind of came out of the chute with some real flaws in it," said Neil Strother, wireless analyst at research firm In-Stat. "I wouldn't say it was a complete disaster but they clearly had some real problems."
The SLVR, however, still retains the 100-song limitation and still uses USB for the transfer technology. Many of the improvements appear cosmetic in nature. The phone is available from Cingular for $199 with a two year commitment. More information available from Motorola (http://direct.motorola.com/ENS/Web_ProductHome.asp?Country=USA&language=ENS&productid=30340).

so this is the replacement for the ROKR. wow, that had a short life span. I saw a pic earlier and it looks cool. a mix between the old ROKR and the RAZR. not bad.

I would guess Apple's requiring that limitation, don't see why Motorola was want it.

God, why must they only make iTunes phones in Candy Bar shape.
I want a flip phone.
Too bad I can't get out of my cell phone contract for 2 more years.

Well those "cosmetic" improvements were needed :p
Good to see Apple's toehold in mobile phone players isn't going away. Hopefully they'll do more with it one day... like design the whole UI and controls for a phone (even if not one they make themselves).

Here's the link for the ROKR 2: http://www.engadget.com/2006/01/05/video-feature-rokr-e2-hands-on/
The SLVR is NOT the ROKR 2. The SLVR is the candy bar version of the next generation of the RAZR line. It's a bit thinner than the RAZR, costs more, and isn't all that impressive unless you wanted to replace your NOKIA with a Motorola.

There is no reason to have a vga camera in a premium phone. 1mp at least. I really can't stand moto. Why not a partnership with SE, much more adventerous company.

i went from the T616 to the RAZR and i'd go back if i could. the razr's menu sucks, the address book only sorts names by their first name (!) and it's not that great going from a bar to a flip, it's sort of a pain. too bad SE doesn't make a full-featured up-to-date phone in a small package.

Yeah, like being too thick was the biggest complaint of the RAZR. Taking off 1/32 of an inch off an already super-thin phone isn't going to impress me.
What if we were offered a phone that didn't suck? Just exclude the camera if it means they will spend more money making a better phone, and yet keep the price the same.

Really. I think it was the exact opposite. When the RAZR first came out, it was very expensive. Only a year later around christmas time were they giving it away, and that was only at online vendors.

I hear that.
The RAZR was a nice looking phone, but the UI made me feel unwell :( I had one for 8 months but ended my contract early so I could get a SE K600i
As a self-proclaimed mobile phone connoisseur I must say SE is probably the best manufacturer. Certainly if you like your UI feature-filled and easy to use. Not quite as easy to use as Nokia but that's just plain clunky.

this is what will plague the itunes phone forever
you have to load it up with MORE than 100 songs!!
even the most casual listener can get more than that.
it's not even economical!!
itunes phone:
$199 with 2 year contract
100 songs
ability to call people
ipod nano:
free camera phone that comes with every cell phone plan ever (2 year contract)
masking tape (to tape the nano to the back of the phone)
$199
500 songs
+ when you break your phone / nano your music / phone ability is UNAFFECTED! two devices = less chance of breaking!
holy crap! will it ever dawn on motorola that it's a bad deal?
the reason the original ipod was successful was that it reached out to average joes with easy controls, brainless streamlined operation and at the time 5GB of music on the go was HUGE.

What I thought was the biggest flaw of the ROKR was the slow transfer speeds... SLVR hasn't addressed that. Still 30 seconds to transfer a 4MB song. With a 100 song cap, you'd obviously be swapping your 100 song choices in and out a lot. I personally wouldn't want to wait a half-hour (100 songs x 30 sec/song) a day to wait for this thing to load songs.
Plus, Motorola's UI is the worst. I unfortunately have a Moto V400. The little delay between a button-press and something happening on the phone drives me nuts. I noticed the same thing on my friends' RAZRs. Hey, design is important, but how can you spend any money on a phone that can't even get the most basic things (e.g. button responsiveness) right?
FYI - David Pogue also just had an article on NYtimes.com comparing Samsung's RAZR-wannabe to the RAZR. Needless to say, he took the RAZR UI to task. It made me feel justified in my ill-will toward Motorola:p

i have an SE T610 and love it, but it's getting outdated. I use it with my iBook and Salling Clicker for powerpoint presentations, and I use the accessory laser pointer that plugs into its bottom, it's just perfect.
For those of you who complained that SE doesn't have anything good to replace your T610/616, take a look at the K750i. It's got a 2MP camera with flash, bluetooth 2.0, candybar design just like the T610/616, and a memory stick slot for gigs of mp3s. It works nicely with Salling Clicker and I think it'll take those accessory laser pointers as well :)

It's sure better looking than the ROKR, but still no bulls eye, when's the V3i going to be released on Cingular? That might generate some interest, although it's really lost lots of interest to me ever since it was released, when it was released it looked like it was an "awesome phone", now it just seems like a phone that they could "do better" on

Like I said in the other thread about this, I'm glad I didn't wait for this any longer than I did. I bought the ROKR for $80 from Buy.com (free after rebate), and it's ok. Not of the issues I have with it have been fixed in this model. USB 1, VGA cam, crappy interface, 100 song limit, and even worse battery life because it's thinner. The ROKR is fine as a phone, and the battery life is good, so unless it dies, I'm sticking with it until something better comes along. Like an Apple phone. :D

Sadly not available in the US. For some reason cell phone carriers here don't believe that people need choice when picking phones, so you're limited to whatever crap Samsung/Motorola flip phones are available. Getting a decent candybar phone is almost impossible, the T637 was the last one released and I own one.
The only thing that makes me interested in this phone is the fact that its a new candybar phone available in the US, a rare thing. If only Motorola's UI didn't make baby Jesus cry.

You do realize that the "S" part of SE is Sony, right? In the music arena, Sony is a competitor to Apple. There's absolutely no way that SE will make an iTunes phone. A Sony Connect phone, sure, but iTunes, not a chance.
Incidentally, if you look at all of the partnerships, Motorola is the only phone company that logically works with Apple. Nokia has ties with Microsoft. Samsung has ties with Napster. SE - see above. LG mainly deals with Verizon and Sprint, so no dice there.
So Apple is left with Moto. The only other option would be to manufacture their own phone, which some people are saying will happen. Personally, I don't believe it. I'm not sure if Apple could make money selling cell phones or running their own cell phone network. Better to sell iPods and work with Moto on the iTunes interface.

I received a SLVR recently from a relation that works for Motorola and it does not come with iTunes but rather a "Digital Audio Player" that seems to be essentially the same. However, it is proving troublesome to link it up with my iBook. I have managed to pair the two but I am told that there are no supported features with this phone. Somewhat strange. (I'm in the UK btw)
I have been using a SE K700i recently (until the screen became partially cracked) and if it weren't for the fact that the SLVR was free, there's no way I would have chosen it. The motorola UI just seems horrible in comparison to the SE's.

That's exactly the move that I made as well. The Sony Ericsson T610 was alright, but the K750i is many times better, due to its improved phone reception, better camera, inclusion of memory stick duo etc etc. I also use mine every night to turn off my Mac when I've finished watching the Simpsons or whatever, thanks to our old friend Salling Clicker. It is actually quite musically capable if you can't afford an iPod, and it even plays AAC files.
However, it is still reliant on the joystick that was the achilles heel of the T610, and the joystick on my K750i has already developed problems from occasional use on java Splinter Cell. I wish Sony Ericsson would go to one of those rocker D-pads like you get on modern Nokias, just for durability's sake.

Naming a phone for a formerly fat weatherman was a big mistake. Maybe the "gastric bypass" crowd will go for the ROKeR, but most everyone else won't care.
I'm not so sure they're doing so much better with the SLVR. As a math geek, I am attracted to the SoLVeR, but I don't think many others will care.

People, stop ragging on Moto for the 100 song limit. It's common knowledge that Apple did that to them, and they'd be happy to do without it -- if Steve would let them. In fact, the ROKR2 uses their own music service and has no song limit (aside from size).
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, if the Mobile iTunes thing flops with Motorola, it'll be because Apple keeps stabbing them in the back.
BTW, it's a slick looking phone, but like others, I want a flip phone, and iTunes with 100 songs and USB 1.1 (which Moto really should fix) isn't really useful... at all...

we need apple to allow other companies like Moto to let the consumer install as much ram card on the phone as they want.
ie, let the consumer put a 512, 1gb or 2gb memory card in there.
and not disable the ability of phone to play more than 100 songs.
this is the real crime here. More people will buy items like this if they are allowed to actually use them. not have handicapped use of 100 or less songs.

new name, new phone... 100 songs is still LAME! Why even release a new product until they could fix that? :confused:Let's look at the options:
Delay releasing the phone until Apple drops the 100 song limit.
What? When iPod Nanos are literally selling as fast as Apple can make them? It'll be a looooooong wait. Especially if that rumored 1GB Nano makes an appearance...
Release phone without iTunes.
After all the money Motorola has already sunk into licensing fees to Apple and porting the iTunes client to its GSM phones, seems kind of silly not to try and recoup something before the iRadio system is ready to roll out.
Release phone with 100 song limit iTunes.
Take advantage of the iTunes/iPod halo effect. Profit!

FWIW, I had been waiting for a long time for the ROKR, even with it's limitations. I didn't like carrying around my 40gig ipod plus a cell phone. I've found the limitations pretty easy to live with(same goes for the SLVR presumably):
usb 1.1 is slow: plug it in when i get home from work or overnight and auto-update
100 song limit: even with the short(average <2min) songs I listen to, this is still between 3 and 4 hours, which is fine for most car trips. Though, I do bring my ipod shuffle along for plane rides and road trips now.
I would say it's worth about $100 though, my sister works for cingular and I got it on one of the family and friend deals for $50AR and am very satisfied for that price, anything over $100 is probably not worth it, given the limitations.
One limitation that I haven't seen mentioned is when using the headphone adapter with standard headphones or car aux-input: When you get a call, the sound comes out over the headphones or car speakers, but if you answer the call, you can't talk since the ROKR refuses to use the handset input when something is plugged into the handsfree 3/32" jack. It would be great if it would use the speakerphone and I didn't have to unplug it from my car to answer a call and then plug it back in when i hang up.

Except it [SE K750i] costs about as much as an iPod. I'd love a solid sub-$200 phone that acts like a shuffle, with something more than a VGA camera. I've considered the W600i, but with only 256 mb of memory, I don't know.

Complain all you want, but when you buy as much music off the iTunes Music Store as I do, and you need (really want) a phone as your MP3 (less obvious at work)... the Motorola ROKR E1 and now SLVR S7 are our only options. The phones really aren't that bad, I traded my bulky Treo 650 for my ROKR. I am now ditching my ROKR for a SLVR.
If there were other phones that supported protected-AAC playback, I would be buying them. But for now, at least I have a cool looking, and for me, highly usable music playback device/cellphone.
Now for a better camera! lol

the razr v3c is almost the worst one in my opinion. it has the verizon ui (which is almost standard on all the verizon phones) masking the motorola ui making the phone extremely slow. thats something that any consumer would notice right away with this phone. another thing wrogn with it is all the constraints it has on bluetooth and the only thing it really has going for it is 1.3 mp camera and obeymoto (voice recognition).

I bought the SLVR on Feb 1 and absolutely love it. Previously had the RAZR, which was way cool but I'm enjoying the non-flip phone. I used auto-fill to load songs from iTunes and it took about 30 mins to load 100 songs.
The iTunes feature on the phone is great--convenient, simple to use, LOVE that it pauses when a call comes in and allows you to accept the call or ignore. If you accept, you hear the caller through the earbuds and they hear you through the built-in speaker, thus no need to disconnect from iTunes to talk.
The SLVR weighs a little more than the RAZR which makes it feel sturdier. The airplane mode is also useful--tested it out on a plane already. Shows that you are on airplane mode on the homescreen so the flight attendants can see that you aren't violating the "no cell phones inflight" rule.

Verizon just launched their own music store based on Windows Media, so don't hold your breath for iTunes on Verizon phones. Unless or until the store in its present form tanks big time, of course. :D
iTunes will NEVER make it onto a VZW phone - until they drop their GIN BREW partners (which will read:NEVER happen). Their profitability with BREW partners is too great; it's the same reason they cripple their bluetooth so you have to use GIN, $5/mo. to get your pics from your phone onto your computer. Every other carrier allows its customers to do what they WANT with the equipment they OWN...urgh if it weren't for VZW's awesome coverage I'd be out the door...
What blows my mind is the fact that all phone ads tout cameras, video, games, ring tones, text messaging, etc., but rarely mention voice quality.

FYI - David Pogue also just had an article on NYtimes.com comparing Samsung's RAZR-wannabe to the RAZR. Needless to say, he took the RAZR UI to task. It made me feel justified in my ill-will toward Motorola:p
Can anyone post a link?
Many thanks! :)

I am not going to purchase any type of iTunes enabled phones until I see 250 songs on it at least, or an expandable version. What's the point? Although the critics and writers and the consumers complain about the limit, but Motorola and Apple* do not do anything about it! Now they may have some type of business plan they haven't revealed here, but from what it looks like, they are not doing squat about any complaints filing in.
* I am not aware of the situation between Apple and Motorola and this situation, and how Apple is included in the creation of the phones.

You always get another transflash card and put another hundred songs on it. Not an elegant solution, but it works. Kinda.

If people stay away from the store in droves in favor of Apple's present solutions, Verizon may rethink their position. But there's also a question of how much of a financial incentive Microsoft is offering to subsidize these stores in an attempt to achieve critical mass for portable Windows Media players. Who knows? Due to financial incentives it may be more profitable for Verizon to run the store with few people actually using it on an ongoing basis. Retail makes for strange partnerships...

Motorola is the sole licensee of the FairPlay DRM scheme (required for any phone with an iTunes client to play content downloaded from the iTMS), which puts Apple in the driver's seat. I'm sure Motorola would love to increase the song limit if it meant that it would sell more phones, but as long as Apple sees that as a threat to its iPod profit margins it's not happening.
