i just bought a used 30gb 2.5" hd over ebay. i was told it was in perfect working order form a user with good feedback ratings. it was manufactured in 9/2002

the thing is, it makes these awful grinding noises when copying. there are no write errors, it just sounds horrible.

my question is- is this a dieing hd? if so i will be able to get my cash back.

i have a video of it; if you want to hear it, let me know.

thanks

I have owned drives that make grinding noises. They have lasted me a lot longer than they sounded like they would. However, I was told by a friend who works in a repair shop that if it makes sounds like an Atari (beeps at you, which one of mine did) it is ready to die.

Hope it works out well for you. If all else fails, go to a repair shop and get them to verify that the drive is toast. This may help you get a refund on eBay.

it does not beeps, just grinds or growls. it happend on one 3gb copy after a perfect 20+ gb copy.

I reformatted and copied over another 26 gb and it did not make the sound again.

should i return it? i got a fairly good deal on it and I would like to keep it, but not if it will only last 4 months... this is my BACKUP drive, not my porn drive. :) it is important that it not be broken.
