iBook video-out to TV?

I was reading on Apple's website that you can purchase the "Apple Video Adapter" in order to hook up the iBook to a TV. I've got a 20" Sony WEGA TV, which has no S-Video out but has component inputs. If I want to make this work, I'd need to buy the adapter I know, but what kind of cable should I get (just want to make sure that a run-of-the-mill component video cable would work). Also, has anyone else on this board done this- did it work out well?

Are you absolutely sure that you don't have an s-video connector on your TV? (it looks like a PS2 port on a PC)

Most new TVs come with them and I know VEGA's do.

And are you talking about a composite (yellow RCA connector) or a componet (red, green and blue RCA connectors) because there's a world of difference between them.

If it's composite, then any RCA cable will work although one bought brand new will be of higher quality.

If it's component, then you will have to buy a VGA-to-component transcoder (which is a bit more expensive and a lot more complicated)

I doubt that your TV has component jacks but no S-Video. Do you mean composite video? If you do then the video adapter will work with your TV. Just make sure that you buy the right one for your iBook, because the all 500 and 600Mhz iBooks will take a different adapter than the newer 700 and 800Mhz iBooks. The only exception to this is if you have a 600Mhz iBook with a CD-Rom drive that you bought when the 700Mhz iBooks were out. A good way to tell other than that is to look at the headphone jack on your iBook. If it is white and seems to have two rings you need the new style adapter, and if it is silver you will need the old one. If you need pics of the silver one I can take a picture of my own iBooks jack. Reply to this thread if you do.

Heh, those two are so easy to mix up. Well, I've got 1 set of component and 2 sets of composite inputs. Sadly, my WEGA seems to be one of the few without S-Video (the model is KV20FS100). Hmm, so it looks like all I need would be a yellow RCA video cable. Thanks for clearing it up for me.

BTW, to the other poster- I've got the 800mhz ibook so I know I need the new adapter, but thanks for the offer.

It appears that he is correct about what he said. I was just reading the manual for his TV and at the time they produced it none of the WEGAs under 24" had S-Video. They did have component video though.

Why is that? It took me less then a minute to get the manual and read the specs.

Unless I got a bad adapter, it seems as though the TVs I plug into won't even work if you try to use S-Video out and RCA Audio out together. The systems (TVs and steros) want all digital or all analog. Of course, like I said before, maybe my adapter is screwy. Oh, and you don't need S-Video out anyway, do you?

That sounds weird. It's normal for a receiver or other piece of equipment to not be able to switch S-Video input to composite output but your equipment shouldn't care what imputs they receive. You should be able to plug a S-video and a composite audio into a tv and have both play through.

Oh, yeah, VGA... but I am still confused... the adapter for the iBook has the same icon as the output on the iMac, yet it says it is for the iBooks...so I can't connect my iMac to my TV at all? Is there any cheap solution?

Yes, I think it is just a bad input connector on the TV. After talking about it again here, I tried it a couple of times with other components, and all was well. Oh well, time to re-design my home theater setup. Cool. :)
