Cool....just to make it clear, you don't get the scholarship, rather, the it will be the "YourNameHere Full Ride Scholarship to WorldRenownedMusicSchool" or something like that. I'm liking the awards at every 100,000 song marker too.

wow 10 60 gig iPods. That's a good prize for apple because it gets the ipod in the hands of more people but I think they could have done a much better prize.

It would be cool if they gave you a new ipod every revision for the next 10 revisions.

No, they don't.

You will automatically be entered into the Promotion by: 1) downloading a song from iTunes (any music video or other video downloads and any free downloads will be deemed an ineligible entry); or 2) a free alternative means of entry by completing an online entry form available at http://www.apple.com/itunes/1billion/entryform/ (a song download or free online entry will be deemed an “Entry(ies)”).

The countdown site says they will award prizes every 100,000th download starting at 950,100,000. It's currently at about 950,894,500.

So did iTunes sell nearly 800,000 songs in the past 2 hours, did Apple announce the contest late, or were we just late in finding out about the contest (the info was posted here about 2 hours ago)?

In any case, good luck to everyone, and may someone on MacRumors get the grand prize!! :-)

Makes getting that grand prize a little easier...maybe.
I doubt they are real-time, they probably did a approximate rate of increment and then put it in the site, probably making it slightly lower so that they can have a buffer.

EDIT: looking at the source, it's an xml retrieval of the increment rate, a new rate is being retrieve every one minute.

The scrolling albums thing is pretty cool (mouse over them). The scholarship idea is even cooler. Something for you, something to help lots of people.

A $10,000 GIFT CARD?

Assume 1 minute (extreme optimism) for you to think of, locate, and download each song.
Assume 5 minutes for you to think of, locate, and download each album.
Assume 3/4 of the credit you spend is on albums.
Assume 12 songs at $10 per average album.
Assume 4 minutes average song length.
Assume you then listen to the songs for 8 hours every day.

That's 11,500 songs: 9000 songs on 750 albums, plus 2500 singles.

You will spend 104 hours finding and downloading them.

And then it will take you 96 days to hear them all.

(I wonder how much that used-up card will be worth on eBay? Should be quite a collector's item!)

Don't be confused :). Every time you buy a song, that is participating in the contest and it has a chance of being one of the winning songs. So, if you are number 100,000 to buy a song since the last winner, you win!

If it's like previous contests they've run, the prize delivery is about 3-4 weeks out.

I'm sure my chances to win could be better if I had the time to enter 25 times a day. As it is, it's hard enough trying to enter 3-4 times a day.

I'm curious if anyone's been notified they are a winner as well.

I hope for their sake, they actually win one of the prizes.

Isn't it a little odd that the counter shown on the Apple home page and the iTunes Music Store home page is labeled "Billion Songs Countdown" even though the counter value is going up?

Yeah, that kinda bugs me ;) Especially for Apple.

To win an iPod or the Grand Prize for the billionth song, you must buy a song each time the counter turns 100,000. The problem is: you can't rely on Apple's counter. It doesn't display the real-time count, it makes a projection based on a snapshot of the sales data over a period of 5 minutes, and that projection is always underestimated so that the counter doesn't go up and down each time the new data is released. With their method, it always goes up - but it's not accurate.

The Apple counter also relies on a 100ms timer to keep running, but if your machine is blocked doing something (like dragging a scrollbar in your browser or whatever), it stops and loses count.

I quickly fixed that over the weekend. Here is my page:
http://www.billiontunescounter.com/

It ain't pretty but so far today, it works. That should bring you one step closer to the 10 iPods and the $10,000 gift certificate. Good luck!

Anyway I have been trying to predict when the billion song will be downloaded for a year now. All guesses have under estimated itunes users and the most recent prediction is Thursday. I say earlier like Wednesday and mabey even Tuesday night late. I know that sounds early but traffic will increase dramatically asthe magic billion draws near. So let me hear your prediction. Winner gets a cookie.

Also, that's going to be in about 1 hour.....its at 999,913,500 right now

woah - that just jumped 7k in a few seconds. Looks like the clock updates all the time according to a rate, but then up refreshes with the actual. So you better star buying now :D

Sadly I dont have that kind of money. But it would be a good idea to do. I was going off what the app iTMS Estimator said but it seems that people are buying songs fast now so they predict 9:42 is when the 1 billionth song will be sold. I might buy an album around that time. Just to see if I do get lucky.

What would happen if the billionth song was purchased by someone who used the free alternative entry? That would probably be a bummer for Apple.
