View Full Version : Sleep (disrupting connections)

A couple of things happen when I put my G4 to sleep.
One, it severs my network connection. It's never done that before, why does it do it now?
Also, the light on the front of the case doesn't turn amber anymore, why?
I'm running 10.2.3, if it matters. TIA for any help.

How's your network set-up? Ethernet? Airport? PPPoE?
Whenever I put my TiBook to sleep it cuts off the Airport connection...no big deal.

It's an Ethernet network and it is a big deal. I have AIM and DC that need to be open all the time, even when the computer is asleep.

You realize that putting your computer to sleep suspends all processes that are running, don't you?
You might want to just set up your computer to shut the screen off and let the hard drive spin down instead.

That's not entirely true, but whatever. It shouldn't sever the network connection. It never did before. What about the amber light not coming on, anything you know about that?

How isn't it true? What symptoms are you seeing that indicate that you're losing the network connection? If it's just AIM saying it got disconnected it's because AIM went offline when it went to sleep.
Can't really comment on the light thing, since I've never seen that happen. Might be something as simple as the light being burnt out...who knows.

No, it's because people can't see me on DC anymore when I go to sleep and AIM also disconnects. Under 9, none of these things happened.
Also, the light can't be burned out, it's an LED. Besides, the green turns off and the amber turns on. If that were the case, the LED would go dark.
Anyone else around here than can try to help me?

Ah... I think that's the problem... Sleep does kill out your network connections - in OS X.
If you go to your system preferences -> Energy Saver... don't let it put the computer to sleep. Just put the display and harddrive to sleep.
You'll really only waste a negligable amount of electricity by not putting the actual CPU to sleep.

Thanks for the help. You didn't modify my post title, did you?

I did... seemed more descriptive than just "sleep" :)
