New Super Mario Bros dated!
We finally have a release date.
by Chris Hardin
February 20th, 2006 - Just as many are weeping from the news that Zelda isn't coming until Fall, Nintendo rewards their fans. In the latest issue of Nintendo Power, we are finally given a release date for the New Super Mario Bros game, the first 2D Mario platformer to be released in ten years.
This release date is...
May 7th.
Thank Miyamoto, it's soon! The anticipation is strong with this one. Sadly, it is not specified whether this is the U.S. or Japan release date, but being that Nintendo Power is a U.S. magazine we can hope this is the U.S. release date. It should be noted that Nintendo has already stated that the New Super Mario Bros is to be released in Japan in May last week.
It is interesting that this release date is two days before E3.

sweeet! a 2-D mario game?!! That's incredible. I never thought they'd go back to 2-D, but this is awesome. Some of my favourite games ever have been 2-D. Tell me this'll be similar to the original games, like an extension of Super Mario World, but in the 21st century!

this should be a well good game. sometimes it appears that games put really fancy 3d in just for the sake of not looking backwards, but in the end it just makes it more complicated and detracts from the basic game play.
good move nintendo.

A DS Lite Mario Bundle seems very likely now :)
I'll be trading in my DS a week or so before Europe release just to capatalise on revenue before new one wipes second hand value down :)

I can't wait for this game :) My morning visit to Joystiq told me about this May 7th thing. I got a little happy inside, i mean the games going to be fantastic. But from what I've seen it doesn't look to have the same feel as the strict 2D ones, its all in the level design. what I've seen so are big flatlands. the level themes don't look so good either.
Heres hoping that the gameplay makes forget the level design and non-fitting graphics.

They better do this well. After all, a lot of people hold the original 2D Mario series as the greatest series ever. There is a huge fanbase there. A lot of people will be angry if this game doesn't play the same. I reckon. It's like if they brought back the old Apple 2's but with intel chips. Theres just something there that wouldn't feel right. no matter how good it is to run.

Funny thing is the NES Mario games had quite a few differences between them, and that's before you get to SMW!

I noticed. Either a noob or they were playing using the big screen and not used to it.
You know what I find amazing? The fact that all the characters are 3D models, yet they look crystal clear like sprites when standing still and look far better animated in motion.

if this is on DS, then what's on the other screen?
if this is good enough, i might just buy a DS, even though i'll only be using it at home...

I'm thinking the same thing. I really have no desire for DS but this game looks outstanding. If they do end up doing some type of bundle then I'll strongly consider it.

there looks like there would be a few other titles that i would like on the DS, but this one if it looks and plays like that most of all.

The bottom screen has stat information and a progress bar. Check out the screen shots attached to this article (image #5)

and even more detailed shots (though it seems really old)

Nobody has mentioned the Co-op mode yet! :) Some of the earlier videos showed players controlling Mario and Luigi at the same time in Co-op mode, as do screenshots.

It keeps getting better. I think if I find someone who gets the game I'll end up getting it too.

well, it looks like i'll be buying a DS then...
i haven't used a handheld since back in the good old days of my old gameboy color, and it seems kinda pointless for me to get a handheld when i only plan on using it at home, but there are just too many good games on it for me to ignore.

I'm pretty sure my parents don't want this game. (My mother doesn't play, and my father sticks to consoles, and mostly FPS.)

The only good thing is that it looks like this game might be the one that breaks my Mario Kart addiction.

I'm like that too. I don't play games outside my own house, maybe take my DS to a mates once or twice a year. Reason I buy handheld games is because I find them better than current gen games. I haven't played a console game properly since Metroid Prime 2. Mario Kart, Golden Sun, Advance Wars, Animal Crossing. They're just excellent on the small screen.
handhelds; lesser graphics, better gameplay, more realistically priced games. :)

:o So what if I drool.
This will be the first Mario game I buy since the one that came with the NES.
march is the month of splinter cell and the other action game.
I hope you aren't talking about Splinter Cell: Double Agent. It's been delayed until September. :( I am really looking forward to it too.

My father doesn't play games, nor does my mother, but I think my father will like this.
In history, there has only been four games he really played.
Age of Empires. He plays it ever day. He's addicted. He plays it day and night. It's the only 'real' game he plays. He won't play the sequel because he says it's too complex.
Internet Hearts, built in to Windows. A free online card game. He plays this whenever he's bored.
The original Super Mario Bros. He sucks at it but we played it when I was little.
And last time we went camping...I snuck my Super Nintendo in the camper and pulled it out during the trip. He tried Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels. He got his butt kicked but wouldn't stop playing. I got him 127 lives and let him play for six hours. I had to perform the 127 lives trick three or four more times ;) but he loved the old Mario Bros games.
