This is a feeler, as I am debating whether or not to buy a MBP. Please let me know what you think it is worth:

Rev B PowerMacG5 1.8ghz dual processor
2GB Corsair RAM (4 matched 512 sticks)
original 80GB HDD + 160GB Seagate 7200RPM/8 or 16MB cache
Airport card+antenna
Dlink Bluetooth
Sony Superdrive firmware'd to a Dual Layer DVD+-RW
Applecare ends in March or May (UPDATED - Checked it - good til April 5th)
9800 Pro 128MB (flashed, VGA, DVI and Svid work)

with 20" Apple Aluminum Display (Applecare til UPDATED - good til August) - I think 1 stuck pixel, perhaps none (not on it right now).

No one wants to help me figure out the value of this? Anyone? I'd appreciate it.

Try getting a price quote (http://thinkmac.org/quote.php) on it and go from there.

this may or may not help.

i just sold my dual 1.8 (4 Gb RAM version) w/80 GB HD, 64MB video and 1.25GB RAM for $1500 cash. it was in totally mint condition and i had all the orig packaging etc. it was all stock except for the RAM. pretty happy with the deal considering i paid $1799 about a year ago for it. actually bought mine just a few days before you on April 1st. i'm actually kind of regretting selling it after trying to photoshop for a day on my 12" powerbook. i did keep my 20" though.

Thanks for that info!! :) I know it can be hard to gauge price - but having folks like you who give that kind of info really helps! I updated the Applecare info - it was for longer than I thought.

I would have rather gone with an Apple refurb. Yeah, yeah sales tax. Free shipping though.

probably right. i'm not sure why this woman wanted mine so much, maybe because we talked on the phone and she just trusted the deal more? i even told her about the refurbs on apple. speaking of tax, i should also consider that when thinking about my sale. i actually forked over $1799 plus tax which took it to somewhere right around $2000 if my memory serves. so one could say that i took a $500 hit on the deal. i'm this close to buying a refurb 2Ghz dual. just waiting to see what happens on tuesday. i'm a spaz. i really miss my G5.

Yeah, I love the Power of my G5, and use a cheap Thinkpad for mobile. I just thought that I wouldn't mind sell the PMG5 and LCD, buying a MBP, and possible a dell 20" LCD to hook up to the MBP.

well i think in terms of performance the MBP will pack as much or more than the G5. well, once there is software to run on it. and the screen is outstanding. you may not even need a large display. i'd say keep the display but unless it is an integral part of your work (color calibration etc) then you should be able to get by with any old LCD. you'll probably fetch more selling as a package anyway. if this helps, i had an offer for $2200 for my display with the G5 i mentioned above but decided to keep my 20". someone also offered me $725 for the display. it's about 2 months old.

I'm a semi-pro photographer (well I do it on the side - but do paid shoots for weddings, senior photos, etc), so color work is a part of it. I'd have to sell the whole LCD and PMG5 to cover the cost of the MBP. I'm thinking I'd get more for them apart from one another. I have a 17" Trinitron I could use to verify color and the MBP's screen for most of the editing (until sometime in the future I could afford that Dell 20").

As for Photoshop use, until the new version comes out I could painfully use my Thinkpad (with external monitor), try to run my old version of PS7 under Windows under VMWare under Linux on the MPB, or just dread using Rosetta. Ahh the thoughts - don't know what to do! Not even sure I want a first gen product - but it sure would be nice to be mobile with a Mac again.

Why not just hang on to your setup until CS3 comes out? I just bought a PB12" to hold me over for the time being. Figure I'll jump to a merom book when they come out and when CS3 is finalized for universal binaries.

Yeah I was trying to figure that out last night. My only reservation is that the PowerMac isn't going up in value. Now I'm on the fence of just selling it and going without a Mac for a while.

as someone who just sold their dual G5 a few days ago let me say that i'm kicking myself for it now. i've been photoshopping on my 12" powerbook connected to the 20" for the past few days and the speed (or lack thereof) is killing me. and considering that the 1.5 Ghz G4 PowerBooks spanked the MacBook Pro across the board in Photoshop CS 2 tests i'd say it would be pretty damn miserable to try and get much done in Photoshop on the MBP right now. i recommend hanging onto your G5 at least until CS 3. i understand the concern of the machine losing its value, that's what drove me to sell mine. try instead to think of how much money it can make you in the meantime.

That's a huge factor for me. Right now I'm doing so much other stuff besides photography, and right now most of my photog income is print re-orders. The only thing I'll be doing in the next few months (on a large scale, with much PP) is a project with another photographer. I could also use the PMG5's at my university. AHHH the decisions!

I think I will sell it once the wait for the MBPs is shorter. So if you know anyone who might be interested in the near future, let them know.

Edit: Mr. Mister is selling his Rev A 1.8 single w/display for $1700 (asking price). You figure the display is worth approx $300, so hopefully he'll get that price making the PMg5 alone worth about $1400.

a single 1.8 (4 ram slots) for $1400!

what a ripoff.

More like $1200 max.
