I have a question for all those hardware geeks out there.

I have a Sony Spressa CRX1600 external firewire (er i.Link) CD-RW (the 12x8x32 model) and was wondering if there is simply some IDE to firewire bridge inside that would allow me to upgrade the drive inside it to say a DVD-RW (specifically the DRU-500A).

Has anyone ever tried this? Or better yet, has anyone tried swapping any drives inside one of the Sony Spressa enclosures?

I read somewhere that suggested Sony uses some proprietary communication bridge for these, but can't find much else on it.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

JK

The IDE interface is not proprietary (ie, you can put the burner in another FW enclosure... ClubMac makes/brands a good one) but I think there's a firmware issue on the Sony bridge so you can only put another Sony in.*

* That's how they did their USB bridge so I'm assuming their FW bridge is the same. I could be wrong though.
