View Full Version : Inside Id
This RedHerring article (http://www.redherring.com/insider/2002/0201/1289.html) gives us some insight into John Carmack and id software...
A few years ago, he publicly criticized Steve Jobs and Apple Computer in an Internet posting for failing to keep up with 3D hardware technology. That led to a tense meeting with Mr. Jobs and, ultimately, an attitude shift at Apple.
The article mentions the upcoming "geforce 3"
I'm assuming that's a misprint... and meant to be GeForce 4

From the article:
"That's not far away from the 1.5 million- polygon characters in the animated film Shrek, which set a new standard for realism for computer-animated cartoon characters."
The quality of the animation in Shrek was abismal. The motion was not fluid and the characters looked flat. They used computers for the sake of using computers, but 1960's Looney Tunes animation is lightyears ahead of Shrek. There is some great CG in movies, even some movies that are entirely CG, but Shrek stinks.
That said, Eddie Murphy was rotf funny. It's just that the animation quality was distractingly bad.

I disagree, Shreck had a different style to it, it looked quite distinctly to me like claymation. I walked in on it, and wasn't sure if some of it WAS claymation, which suprised me because I've worked with a lot of 3d and can normally identify what renderer was used for movies.
Personally I'd say it was simply made with a different style in mind.

I agree - they were trying for the softer look, more like traditional animation and it was much better than the start 'obviously CGI' like the Pixar movies have had to date.
I preferred the rendering of Shrek to a greater degree than 'Monsters Inc', but then I've gotten tired of the 'hard' rendering of Pixar - its like they got stuck at 'Toy Store' and have never improved their software.

Now Final Fantasy-that was some amazing CG. when I saw the trailer, I didn't know it wasn't live action until they showed a closeup of Aki.
