if you have an Apple Superdrive, that only works with DVD-R, DVD+R format is one thats less compatible and doesnt work in DVD-R drives (like the Pioneer A04)

DVD+R and DVD+RW may not work in some DVD players as well although there shouldn't be a problem using DVD-R and DVD-RW disks in 99.9 percent of the home DVD players--Apex players don't always work with commercial releases.

Just to add to that DVD-R/W discs as you said should work in 99.9% of all DVD players (made in the last 2-3 years).

Actually DVD-R has a chance of working in most any DVD player ever made. I have a first generation DVD player (Panasonic) so it's a tad over 5 years old, and it plays DVD-R's just fine.

There is a chance but it's a slim chance. You have to use really good media for that to happen. The later DVD players have more powerful lasers and better lenses so that they can read the cheaper lower reflectivity DVDs.
