MacRumors
Jan 30, 2003, 05:49 PM
Several readers that Apple has sent out a ".Mac Connection" email stating:

On Jan. 31, iPhoto 2 and iMovie 3 will join iTunes 3 as free downloads available at www.apple.com. iDVD 3 will also be released, and all four applications bundled under the name iLife can now be ordered on CD and DVD for $49.00. iLife is also included on new Mac computers.

Readers also report that iLife is now shipping.

Finally, .Mac Address Book syncing is functional (http://www.mac.com/1/isynchowto.html).

New iMacs are expected (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/01/20030129220556.shtml) on Feb 4th, and 10.2.4 is still expected this week.

For those of you who don't know already, if you bought a Mac with a SuperDrive on or after 7/1/03, you can get iLife for $20 from iLife Up-To-Date (http://www.apple.com/ilife/uptodate/).

Most of the world write the date: day/month/year, it is just the US that writes it month/day/year for some reason. It took me a while to get used to the US way which appears on the Net the most.

Anyway is 10.2.4 meant to come out on the Friday as well. Someone early (on a previous topic) was saying that 10.2.4 might be released at the same time as iLife. I now have a 1Mbit Cable connection and want to use it to actually download something big. Since the only offer use for this kind of speed at the moment seems to download illegal Divx files (which I don't do).

Maybe we should use the three letter abbreviations for months in the forums, that way there is no question of what is meant.

You could always download MP3s from legal places, like mp3.com (http://www.mp3.com) .

And of course there is always quicktime movie trailers from Apple's Quicktime site (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/) .

Hi, all! I'm a long time reader, first time poster and soon to be "Switcher".

I'm a United Statesian and I get sooo confused with time. I've
decided to start using ISO standards for date and time.

Date:

YYYY-MM-DD

HH:MM

So, right now, it's 2003-01-30 20:51 (GMT-5).

(Descending order from longest unit to shortest unit)

I also have no idea why Sunday is the first day of the week here.

I don't have a Mac yet (either gettin' a 15" AlBook when (if?) they come out, or if not, a 1 GHz PowerMac and a 17" ASD), but I use one occasionally at work. It's a G4 400MHz, 256MB RAM w/ DVD-ROM and Zip-100. It's running OS X 10.2.3. I love it! It's soo cool.

This happened today--a faculty member wanted my boss (he's the Web Instructional Technology Coordinator at SVSU) to get some pictures off of her new camera. So, he got down on his knees and bent around the computer to plug the camera into the computer. Then, he popped in the Software installation disc. It said not to plug in the camera until after the software was installed. So, I, sitting at the Mac workstation (which isn't currently my primary workstation) said, "Well, let me see what I can do with iPhoto." So I plugged in the camera, and iPhoto automatically launched. I clicked the "Import" button and the pictures started importing. When it was done, I exported the images to a Zip disk. While they were exporting, my boss had just finished installing the FinePix software.

Wow... that was completely irrelevant.

Peace,

True, true, true. I was actually clicking on the "pre-order" button before it changed, and the order site said "place order". Slowly but surely the site has been changing. Now I just want the "download now" link to be up. :)

I know its a bummer and all, but just try to sell Keynote on eBay and see how much $$ you get, since I don't think Apple will ''reemburse'' you since they are being generous enough to have this offer.

Most all policies for anything opened that one can use (e.g. Software, CDs, DVDs, games, etc...) are that you can only get an even exchange for another copy of the same thing (if you got a defective copy).

a great story.
or how about just plug in the camera, like I do, and it just shows up on the desktop as a drive? Then I drag the files to a folder, then eject the drive.

then I realised I could drag text files (or whatever) to the drive and copy them to the camera. Sure enough it works. I can use the camera as a portable drive!

hmmm. it wouldn't cut and paste, but i did get the .mac email, sent on Jan 30. Now it is 12:44 on the 31st here in Japan.

Man I just love hearing about the deals and complain of some people, ( I didn't get the deal, can I take it back and get the deal etc) maybe that was not what was happening but wtf? most of us don't get those deals, try to be a little more discreet.

Or even better,

Buy 10 copies with the deal (if the deal is for a single copy only, ask your colleagues to buy more copies for you).

Sell all of them in the ebay for 30 bucks!

You got your copy for free, made some money and helped some friends to get cheap keynote.

By the way I am interested if you want to sell !!!

Even though Keynote is just like a beta!

For $15, I doubt you'll get the full retail package. Probably just a CD (and/or DVD). So you probably won't be able to exchange it at CompUSA.

well, if that's the case, he can try and sell one copy to a friend for a slight loss, but less than what he's already "lost," probably.

I read this on thinksecret.com. If this is true, then i would suspect that the same would happen for the apps.

Once again, i may be completely wrong, and i hope that i am b/c like everyone else, i am dying to get my greedy little hands on those apps and play around with them, but at the same time i wouldn't want people to be dissappointed if the apps didn't come out right at the stroke of midnight.

Apparently they release them at around 8 am Cupertino (pacific) time.

Although that seems kinda strange, as it would be 11 am by then EST for places such as New York.

Thats a bit late isnt it?

I dont see why they bother waiting until business hours. surely they can automate it so the downloads come up at 12 midnight.

It was already on the Apple Store shelves here in San Diego, Thursday afternoon! Walked in, there they were, sitting next to the cash registers. I didn't even ask any questions. Picked up a couple of boxes and bought them -- didn't want to lose my chance.

Remember one thing -- you need AT LEAST 4.3 GB free on your boot partition to burn DVD-Rs in the Finder or iDVD .. I'm going through a painful process of backing up stuff and resizing my partitions. UGH. Permissions problems up the yin yang. Gotta reinstall everything. My wife's iBook install went fine (single partition disk) and she's happily playing with iPhoto and iMovie.

I'm not sure how this will translate into a CompUSA purchase, but it's worth investigating.

As for email from Apple about the availability of iPhoto2 and iMovie3 downloads, I never got one, though I have a .Mac account. Also, it's currently 10:23am EST and still no download button on the website. Hmmm.

On Jan. 31, iPhoto 2 and iMovie 3 will join iTunes 3 as free downloads available at www.apple.com. iDVD 3 will also be released, and all four applications?bundled under the name iLife?can now be ordered on CD and DVD for $49.00. iLife is also included on new Mac computers.

So I get in this morning and call the Apple SoHo store in NYC around 10ish, remember this is the big one, a flagship store, and I am told that they have not received and shipment of iLife yet. I was like "what?" "We're waiting for them" I'm told. OK, so I call J & R Music, the web site says they have them but after a phone call they have sold out already! Now its 12:30 and I just call Apple SoHo again and now I'm told that it was announced today and that they should be receiving it within the next 2-3 days. Ok, Apple product that was announced as being available last week but delayed, not available at an Apple store because they have not received shipment yet?! If I were Steve, I'd be pissed that my own store didn't have any copies to sell.

And on a side note, Apple has a history of releasing updates at 5:00 pm eastern on Fridays. I believe the past 2 OS updates have been Fridays @ 5. Maybe the bandwidth gets cheaper after 5.

If "year" is not pertinent in context, month-date may be used. If "era" is other than AD in the current context, then that should be placed first. If greater precision than the date is required, hour:minute:second may be added afterwards.

All hopes of the world converting to both a common and usable pattern dashed, I suppose three-letter month abbreviations are a far sight better than numeric date representations.

I've been up since 3:30 am local time checking the site for a download button. Finally around 10:45 local time I called the Canadian Apple supportl ine and three different staff there were unaware that iLife apps were even going to be available for download.

I was really unimpressed. The biggest online event to happen on your wbsite all week and you didn't know about it? Boo.

Anyway if it doesn't become available for download by closing time, I'll just swing by the Apple dealer here and see if they have boxed copies lame as that sounds.

Heh, 20 cop cars vs a post office truck, how can you not enjoy the show. Hopefully COPS will replay the chase, it's funny watching an entire call center staff laugh when the truck did circles (literally) around the cop cars.

I am getting so bored, I skipped class- thinking I'd be able to get all the updates before I have to go to work at 6:00pm est, but Apple is just sitting on their hands.

What is going on with these guys- it's not going to influence my decision to purchase iLife by holding out- I don't have a superdrive, but if I could use an external dvd burner I'd buy iLife in a second.

Being in Canada, getting software for the mac is difficult- there are no Apple Stores, and all the dealers get stuff weeks after it comes out. I'm not sure how hard it would be for Apple to ship their products a couple weeks early- maybe throw in a couple t-shirts and say don't release these till January 31.... if they really get picky have random audits, make the dealers sign an agreement... I dunno. Apple needs to be more definte about dates when it comes to software. Hardware is understandable, it's harder to make, harder to distribute...but common ...cd's? It would probably be faster for me to download iLife off some guy using limewire.

Well, I'll be here waiting :P We should have a giant iChat discussion going heh :P

It's now available on the Apple site.
Go to whichever application, and you'll see a download link!
