View Full Version : 10.2.4 - Still Waiting
MacRumors
Feb 3, 2003, 12:19 AM
ThinkSecret posts (http://www.thinksecret.com/news/macosx10242.html) further details on the 10.2.4 upgrade that was expected last week:
Insiders said that 10.2.4 will include updates to OpenGL, QuickDraw, and Bluetooth, as well as a variety of video bug fixes, some of which will resolve issues with Keynote. Additionally, support will be improved for pre-bronze PowerBook G3 models. Issues with prebinding and copying large files with SMB have been fixed, and new printing tweaks should improve interfacing with Gimp-Print
ThinkSecret details other areas of improvment as well. Current seed is reportedly 6l20 which may possible become Gold Master.

Booya!
Anyway, I hope 10.2.4 fixes some of the issues that make my daily life a pain in the butt.

Now lets have it. [sort of off topic] On apples website you can see the new "Power of X" QuickTime stream (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/powerofx03/)
And in it some apple exec demonstrates what happens when quartz extreme is turned on and off by playing a Sheryl crow video and then dragging things around over it. While he is doing this he has a quartz extreme UI he is using to turn the offload to the VPU on and off. I don't see that app in my utilities, does it exist for Joe Q. public or am I just missing it? Thanks!

Ok, I'm probably just too lazy to find this out, but could someone please tell me what "Gold Master" is? People keep mentioning the 10.2.4 build becoming "Gold Master," but I never know what it means.

It means the release version of the update. In other words the finished product.

man, even XP SP1 never got this much attention, lol. it's funny how we are. when i had XP, i would run windows update every week or so, just to stay on top of things, but i never knew what to expect. now i find out about nearly every update to the operating system almost a month before it comes out, and i literally pine away waiting for it.
i hope this new driver helps my artificially slow radeon M9000 a little.

More specifically Golden Master means just that it means it is the final version that they will use as a master for duplication and distribution.

Is there a coded name that comes before "golden master" (i.e. silver master, bronze master and so on)?

Usually it's Final Candidate 1, 2, 3... etc until Gold Master.

not release candidate (1,2,3)? that's more common in the software world.

It's not in mine either, lol, which fits with what i have heard (i.e., you can't turn off QE and antialiasing and all that stuff w/o 3rd party software)... but i had no idea they had a cool little demo app to test it. i wonder if we can get that.

iChat Upgrade, am i the only one excited about that, i want it to become usable software so i can ditch this AOL crap. It needs a lot of work still. Any idea on a release date for it still looking at the 4th or did that get pushed back with the latest GM?

No, you're not the only one. I like iChat now, and some co-workers and I use it at work to trade files and chat over our local network (helpful when you consider that we are separated by five floors and that our firewall cuts us off from outside chat services.) However, I simply cannot understand why group discussions are not possible over a local network. If it's possible in iChat, I have not yet figured it out. I dislike having to keep multiple windows open for different chats. It would be nice to have a 'group room.'

Yeah, iChat is due for a major upgrade. I like it, but the underpinnings need a lot of work. It's not very compatible with the Windows AIM client (embarrassing to keep crashing when trying to send a file to a PC user because the iChat engine doesn't know how to talk to the client properly). Plus there are just so many AIM features missing from it... File Sharing (not transfer), voice chat (where's our MPEG-4 video chat, steve!?), custom user info, ICQ compatibility (win AIM beta has had this for months now). I really hope we don't have to wait for 10.3 for new iChat features, as there's really no other AIM clients out there that "think different" enough (at least to me, they all seem to be based on the same old concept, nothing innovative about them like iChat was. somebody please prove me wrong, though.)

An important feature to me is Logging. And i wish apple would rethink their interface for iChat, those speech bubbles are ugly as hell and dont reflect apples normal work. I hope that the revision to iChat is massive as it is an offten forgotten iApp and i dont even belive apple has a side page for it on their site. Its a great begining but needs much work. :D

Maybe they can hold onto it for fixing video/audio in imovie 3.
Or would that be an exclusive fix for the app itself?

I don't have my iBook with me but I'm pretty sure there is a logging option to save chats, although the interface could use some work from what I remember. And I thought you could turn the speech bubbles off too.

You guys seem to have a TON of issues with iChat, myself i dont have that many issues, there are small things here and there, but nothing worth moaning about really, i find it just needs a few pick me ups.
Mainly that lies along the lines of tiny inconsistancies and small glitches, i personally have never had trouble sending any files or joingin or creating group chats, or chaging user information, or chaging info in my buddy list at all.

"Pre-bronze" PB support? Seems to me they're not finished supporting the Bronze PBs yet, specifically the Lombard (1999): there's no DVD playback in OSX yet, AFAIK (I've definitely tried under 10.2.2, can't remember if I've also tried 10.2.3).
I would also like a way to use my Irez Capsure card with this machine for full-screen video playback. irez appears to be out of business (web site has a page that says only "Please wait, loading page", so I'm not holding my breath for the OS X drivers they used to promise).
Anyone know of workarounds for these things?

"Gold" in "Gold Master" refers to the color of the CD-R disk (old CD-R disks were universally gold in color) that is sent to the duplication/pressing facility, not to the relative quality of the build. Hence, there is no "silver" or "bronze" master.

I HATE ichat.
You can turn the text bubbles off, yes. That helps a little.
But Adium destroys it. Adium sorts your contact list alpahbetically, auto-resizes the buddy list window, sorts away and idle people to the bototm, is 100x more customizable than iChat, and most importantly, IT HAS TABBED IMs.
Once you use tabbed IMs, you cannot go back to regular IMing. I can talk to 10 people and it all stays in one nice window, with an ingenius little icon next to each name which gives detailed status information.
If you are not already using Adium, you should be. It's rock solid, feature packed, and much more elegant and OSX-looking than Apple's IM program.

you're exactly right. iChat "does" both no-bubbles and logging. it's just counterintuitive to get to (which is generally against apple's philosophy. to turn the bubbles off, ctrl-click on any ichat window (you can also adjust the look of your buddy list [take off the icons, etc.] by clicking the left-most button on the bottom; from there there's a nice little menu there. )
logging is also an option, but it sounds like it's not too good. there are 3rd party software mods to iChat everywhere; iChat enhancer utilizes the Application enhancer engine and is very nice for getting <br> and multiple lines in iChat. i have certainly seen several log managers around.
personally, my biggest issue is away messages/profiles. apple's support is almost literally nonexistant. you can put your status up, but it's basically one line only. i have friends who make entire songs into away messages, and iChat grossly turns this into a single line that spans the screen and still doesn't show the away message. what a joke. you have to IM the person to see the away message, which i'd rather not do. also, it doesn't send my away message to others when they IM me, like AIM does. the other thing, as i said, is profiles. you really can't make much of one, if you can at all (i haven't seen where you can), and i can't even click on frickin links in my friends' profiles. there is not specific button to quickly see their profile (the one in the buddy list goes to their other info, with the profile as a tab, which is useless to me, and you can't resize the window or scroll it (with a scrollbar; you can highlight text and use the up and down keys). it's not good at all. those 2 areas are in the worst need of change, as to me they are some of the simplest, most basic things. mpeg-4 video conferencing is way out there; it's a great feature, sure, but that goes way beyond the basic features. i think they should get those running first.

barring the tabbed messaging, just about everything you mentioned is in iChat too. oh, i could use the auto resize feature, too, yeah. the profile support is nice, but there is absolutely no support for away messages whatsoever. you know in aim, how you can right click on a contact and see their away message in their profile? this is basically what i am after. it's an unthinkably easy feature to implement (if you have rights from AOL, which apple most certainly does. Adium does not, nor do any other programs like it, odf which thee are better than adium).
yes, i DLed it and checked it out, if just cursitorily. it's not THAT much better than iChat. i really would use it if it ran away messages, but iChat's anemic support for them is better at this point.

It does have away messages.
You can save certain ones and use them over again.
Adium wipes the floor with iChat.
here you can save and edit your away messages.

um, i think i'm right in saying that if you just hold the mouse pointer over the person who's away, it will pop up in one of those tool tip things...no need to click or anything, just don't move the mouse for a second or two. works for me when i wanna see a friends (usually ridiculously long quote as an) away msg.
When I first purchased Jaguar back in August, I was excited to the point of giddiness to finally be able to ditch AOL's pathetic and unstable AIM program. Unfortunately, as most of us found, iChat was worse. Therefore, I went to look for alternatives. The one program that I use and highly recommend about a million times over is Proteus - tabbed IMs, built in cocoa, and best of all, allows multiple IM clients such as Yahoo!, MSN, or ICQ. And of course AOL. There's still no fix for the not being able to see someone's away message without messaging them issue, but at least other people can see your own away messages. I'll never use anything else again unless Apple really improves iChat....

yeah, i know, that's what i use too, but it's highly inconsistent, that is, it doesn't always pop everyone. it's so weird. it'll pop every one of them, except for a single one. but the popup spans the screen sometimes and STILL doesn't get it all. and they have line breaks in them too, like when people send song lyrics, and iChat just eats them, not even inputting a space. it does this when you copy and paste text in from elsewhere into a chat too. it annoys me.
like i said, iChat DOES a lot of the little things that even other programs don't do (namely the away message viewing, but they really made it horrible.
