The PS-thread just made me wonder. Any official word on this yet?

With some kind of DVD support, there's a chance that it will support 5.1. I always heard that Nintendo didn't want digital audio out because of some kind of latency problem with the images on-screen. Dunno if that's still true.

The Cube does it

It sort of does. It has Pro Logic II which is 5.1's little brother. I even think it might be 4.1, thinking back to my old Sky Pro Logic 1 setup.
I don't see what the problem with it is though. When I play Prime in 5.1 I hear something and I can pin point where it is just listening to it. I've heard true 5.1 on DVD's and at my mates home-cinema thing. It just all sounds to same to me!

Pro Logic 2 is an emulator. It fakes the 5.1 but it is not true 5.1

Even if it does it will be up to the game developer to support it. Unless Nintendo actually forces it... like MS with Live. :)

No, I do not think it goes quite that far. But at least "Live Aware" and include Achievements.

Microsofot forces every developer to include online support.
It might not be online multiplayer- it might just be the simplest bit of stat tracking so others can see that you've beaten the game for example- but it's required to have SOME online functionality.

I haven't seen an optical out on the latest Revolution pics. Maybe it will be incuded in the base of the video connector, like for the 360?

I'm not sure how came up with that idea, but it's wrong.

According to those links it's not a true 5.1, it's a simulated 5.1 from 4 channels...

I'm not sure how came up with that idea, but it's wrong.Actually, he's right. DPL and its bretheren are 5.1 simulated from a stereo stream.
"True" 5.1 formats are Dolby Digital (DD) and dts.
The Xbox did DD and dts real-time decoding, the 360 does DD.
To my knowledge (please, someone correct me here) the PS2 did 5.1 if pre-rendered (no real-time decoding) like in cut scenes and the Cube offered no 5.1 support.

yup. only in cut scene could the PS2 give you true 5.1 because it was all pre-rendered and pre-loaded to know what speakers to do what while during game play, Dobly Pro 2 was used to simulate the 5.1 sound but not technicly true 5.1.

Is it true that the PSP supports 7.1 and the PS3 5.1?
Thought I heard that somewhere. Sounds like its squashable.

Thought I heard that somewhere. Sounds like its squashable. How does the PSP support any form of surround sound? It's only got a headphone jack, iirc

LOL! 7.1 on a psp  :D :D LMAO
It's possible it will support 5.1 as it will playback DVD movies, so why not have a 5.1 output. It doesn't need to have an expensive decoder built in, it could just rely on you having to hook it up to your 5.1 decoder so it should be cheap to implement.....
If it doesnt, then it will at least support dolby pro logic 2.

Yep your right Don. Though I think the xbox only supported output of DTS rather than actually decoding, you still needed a 5.1/DTS decoder & amplifier which did the actual decoding..
PS2 only supported 5.1 in cutscenes and on dvd films.
