View Full Version : FS (feeler): 1.66ghz core duo mac mini

so, my mac mini sort of pissed me off ~10 minutes ago, and I'm semi interested what kind of price i can get for this. Nothing's wrong hardware wise, just, I don't feel like reinstalling OS X or something (i would if someone buys it..), and I can't be arsed to fix anything.
Specs: 1.66ghz intel core duo Mac mini, purchased roughly a month ago (first/second week of march). Pretty much same as stock (80gb HDD, superdrive), except with user-added 2gb ram. Gently used, and has Applecare for the next 11 months (and Apple'll fix anything for you (and you can get the 2 year addon for $149) as long as it's not because the mini was opened & damaged as a result)
I also have a 20" cinema, if anyone's interested, purchased with the mac mini.
I was thinking $700 for the machine alone? Is that too much? Too little? Just right? Considering the price of the machine (at $750 or whatever with the edu discount), and the 2gb ram (from newegg, just under $200 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820221043 ), but considering how there's no warranty...i figure somewhere around there is not a bad price, maybe a bit on the low side..
I still have the original boxes and stuff for both mac mini and display, and the original 2x256mb sticks of RAM that came with the mini...
edit: about trading, sorry, but i'm only pretty much interested in trading if at all for a MacBook Pro or the most recent revisions of the Power Mac G5s or 15/17" PowerBook G4s (and if need be, cash or other hardware for the difference), as I'm not really looking to replace this with a machine, thanks :)

Well, this is a long shot considering you're trying to get rid of the Mini, but would you be at all interested in trading it for a Core Solo + cash?

Ok, that's cool, just figured it was worth a shot. My first Intel Mac (an iMac) was a total dud, and I took a gamble on this Mini, and it paid off - wasn't sure if you were lookin' to do the same. Would you consider any other trades? I have a 160GB Network Drive, a 16x DVD-RW DL and a spastic 3.1MP Kodak camera that I could trade towards this, if you were interested. Lemme know.

yeahh, i just don't want another mini...if you have a bigger desktop mac, i might think about it...otherwise, sorry :(
the mac mini's great...guess it's just not THAT great of a machine for what I need (i think i require xcode on a pimped out dual core iMac or something :D j/k)

The only thing I have other than the Mini and the other trades is a desktop PC, but that seems like even longer of a long shot! Well, good luck with your sale otherwise, that's a great machine for a great price. Hope someone snatches it up!

That's a very good price considering the RAM upgrade... I have to think about this, I've been saving for a new monitor but I could be convinced to hold off on a new monitor for a few more months.
Ahhh, the agony/bliss! :)
Great price, I'll let you know ASAP but don't hesitate on my part if you get an offer.

How much for Cinema Display.
Also, was there any damage done to the casing when you did the RAM upgrade?
VERY interested in the Cinema Display.

as someone stated earlier, all i have is a desktop PC. but it's got an AMD X2 3800+, and GeForce 6600 overclocked (came overclocked, i didn't overclock it) and 300 gb HD and 2 x 80 gb HD.
i'd be willing to trade it. let me know what you think. the only thing that i might want to keep is the 300 gb hard drive. other than that, i think my PC is worth more than the mini, but i really just hate windows.
i built the pc myself

I think that the price is good on the mini, and I am interested in it. You have a PM from me with some specific questions that I did not want to post in the thread.
Thanks!

$700-750. I'm pretty certain if you didnt break anything in the mini that your warranty will still be valid.
I'm also certain that if they wouldnt honor it with the 2GB, if you popped back in the orginal RAM before taking it to get serviced on, they wouldnt know the damn difference.

you can just say the ram was installed by an applecenter and they will honor the warrenty.

yeah, just called the apple store (at the grove, talked to some chick who's name started with a C..)
apple WILL cover anything not caused by the RAM, or my opening the computer to get at the RAM. :) I guess I was wrong.
Righto, I wrote this in a privmsg to someone else, maybe it might interest you guys:
Payment I'm not entirely sure about, like I said in the thread, just a feeler, I want to know what kind of price I can get for it.
A bit ambivalent about whether or not I should sell it right now as it's really not a bad machine. My thinking is that it's one of the programs I always run that's making it kernel panic, as it's certainly not any of the hardware or the RAM I installed, but it seems like it just needs a reinstall of OS X, or it's just a bug in some software I'm using (which, I haven't yet narrowed down, too many applications to go through, but I have a feeling it might be Azureus, but that may just be because an older version used to do that and that's why I stopped using it :) ). But like, I also want a more powerful machine (i.e. power mac), and I figure selling it right now while it's pissing me off means i'd get a better price for it, maybe.
Okay, so there is no voided warranty, just that Apple won't cover any damage done by the RAM itself, or any damage that occured when I opened the machine, which is all on the bottom tray-ish case, which has a couple scratches on the plastic part from where I slipped with the knife. but from what i've experienced from apple, they're either REALLY lax about checking for that kind of stuff (in which case you're lucky), or really anal about it and refuse to repair it for free because of something seemingly stupid and unrelated (in which case you're really out of luck), so I'm not sure how useful applecare might be at all.

i'll go for it for 700 shipped, janey, but only if you send me my hot sauce along with it.

Um, any reason why you're interested in the ACD? I'm most definitely not parting with the display unless I sell off the Mac mini as well, because I'm not interested in having a spare ACD as I already have all the displays I can stand right now.
Also, there are only a few sorta visible (when the computer is upside down) scratches on the bottom plastic part of the casing, just looks like it got scratched against something sharp by accident or something, i swear :)

I would definitely try to get Apple to replace the machine. When I got my Intel iMac I had the same problems, and no reinstall or hardware test or anything made it go away. It took days on the phone, but Apple finally just gave me a full refund even though it was BTO. You might wanna try that, as you'd be getting all your money back if it is in fact flawed in some way.

that's interesting, thanks for the heads up. i'll get around to reinstalling OS X to see if it does it again, if it does then I will go talk to apple. Guys, I might have to put off selling it if this is the case  don't wanna sell the machine if the hardware's defective.
Mine wasn't BTO, couldn't bear spending that insane amount of money on the RAM upgrade, so I just bought the RAM off newegg and installed it a week after getting it.

like i said, i don't really want to sell only the display or only the computer, but the display I'd be willing to part for ~$600-650ish. Probably closer to $600, as the shipping alone would probably cost a fortune.

well, I already have a 12" iBook and i'm not so fond of the 12" powerbooks :( would you be willing to sell the new hard drive alone? i need a new laptop drive for an enclosure :)

dont suppose you need another 3500+ box :o :p
as much as i'd love a mac, though, i cant deal with the integrated graphics, for 3d modeling/animation and gaming.

heheh that's probably the last thing I would consider trading for ;)
yeah, the integrated graphics are annoying, but it's not too horrible.

please read :) before sending any more private messages, please :p
guys (and gals, and everyone inbetween), I think I might put off selling it until I can figure out why the machine's kernel panicing, because I really do not want to sell a defective machine (as, it will probably piss the buyer off a lot, and make my life miserable maybe).
I also have a few trade offers I want some more details on as well, before I make up my mind.
i'll update this thread accordingly at that time (probably within the next week or something)
cheers! :)

i understand. i just thought i would throw it out there, since the pc would be worth at least 1200-1400, while the mini is just 700 or so. if you change your mind let me know. you could probably resell it and make some money, but i'm just not good at selling stuff (had a bad experience one time)
either way, good luck
