Looking to buy one of the 800Mhz G4 FP iMacs that were just replaced by the 1Ghz G4 machines, hopefully with the following:

512mg RAM
iLife upgrades
Office for Mac

Would rather the 17", but will consider a 15" if the price is right.

Thanks!

What kinda price are you looking for?

not sure. i just checked ebay and there seem to be a fair number of 17" models for sale but not 15". Powermax sells them for $1450. There were two completed auctions on ebay one for $1475 and one for $1125. I'm not gung-ho about selling unless i can get a good price so maybe something around $1400 and i'll include shipping.

if you are not interested in the bluetooth adapter or free shipping i could sell it for $1300. i can also swap out the 512MB chip for a 256mb chip for a total of 512 ratehr than 768 if you dont think you need that much ram.

My buddy just picked up a 17" 800 SD from the Apple Store, around $1500. So I guess he is not looking anymore!

A setup like yours with 256MB goes there for around $1350 open box, so you should be able to get something a little under that depending on what kinda warranty you have left on it.

im not interested in selling if it is less than that. considering i have 512Mb more ram and bluetooth on mine i think i could do better than $1325, though it is no longer under warranty. im not really going to try to actively sell it [like put it on ebay or anything] since if i sold it i would need to buy someting else immediatly and i don't like any of the current Apple models. i just figured if someone was looking and would pay between $1300 and $1400 it might be worth it (since i really do not like the imac).

i was thinking of picking up 12" powerbook if i sold the imac, but according to benchmarks its actually slower than the imac and 12" ibook so that discouraged me from buying one. if an opportunity presents it self then i might still sell the imac and pick up an ibook or something, but considering Apple's poor offerings right now im not going to go out of my way to 'upgrade' at the moment.

I hear ya, always good idea to wait until you REALLY want to upgrade.

As for the iBook, as part of our "search" today we timed iMovie rendering of effects on two clips totallying around a minute of video. The iBook (700Mhz I think) took more than 30 seconds compared to an 800Mhz iMac, so it looks to be kinda lower-powered to me.

I havn't had the chance to play with the 12"PB enough, but it felt much snappier than the iBook.

i played with one at our campus store. it felt pretty sluggish compared to my imac but im sure it was just a ram thing. but i was mostly discouraged by this article (http://www.barefeats.com/pb17.html) on barefeats.com. The 12"pbook didn't fair well.

I do not see why Apple felt it necessary to cripple the 12". I think most people who would want a pwoerbook would be willing to pay for the full power of a powerbook. charge more but give me the 1ghz cpu option, more max ram (even if one module is non-upgradable), a better graphics card, and fw800. i'd gladly pay an extra grand if they offered a full featured 12" pbook. as it is its just an expensive ibook. mostly it just seems strange to me that my year old imac has pretty much the same configuration as the brand new powerbook. seems like apple's strategy this year is smoke and mirrors until the ppc970 comes out. Even apple's smoke and mirrors products though as still a little tempting :)
