I know that Half-Life, and therefore Counter-Strike, aren't available for the Mac. However, I just downloaded the new "Steam" version of Counter-Strike for Windows, and I see that it doesn't require Half-Life to already be installed. Anyone know if a Mac port of Steam is in the works?

They're not going to port steam anywhere. Counter-strike 1.6 will have all of the features of steam integrated when it leaves Beta, and Steam will become obsolete, especially since it HOGS system resources...
Furthermore, Valve has no intention of porting CS to mac, I've seen it posted by Valve forum monitors, I can't remember exactley where, but I remember. You might think since it's sierra that we would have a chance, but sierra hasn't released even a remotely decent game for mac since what, Loadrunner?
Not gonna happen guys, if you want to play CS that bad, spend 2K on a computer, but make sure you use Linux ;)

Tell me how does x86 Linux differ from PPC Linux?
I mean how does it do this differently.
More specific, why can('t) Counter Strike run on a PPC Linux. And (ha ha ha) what are the current PPC Linuxs out there?

I don't believe they have a linux client for CS. They d have the server available. I belive you can find several linuxes that run on PPC YELLOW DOG BEING ONE OF THEM. Sorry caps lock on. Do a google search for mac and linux and see what comes up

x86 linux is compiled for the x86 processor and ppc linux is compiled for the ppc processor. the ppc does not know how to read x86 instructions and vice versa, so you can't run a program compiled for one on the other. things like html, java, javascript, realbasic, are all interpreted, meaning that they can run on any system with an interpreter or run-time (html can run on any machine because someone has written a browser that interprets it, just as a java app can run on any machine with a compiled java runtime). i'm not familiar with the cs game, but if there is a version for x86 linux, a version for ppc linux would be just a hop-skip-and a jump away (little more than a re-compile) and the same goes for darwin, since it's very similar to linux. the problem is that the publisher/developer does not feel that it would be worth the time to do a port.

CS is not available for linux. There is a linux server for CS. That is only because with Linux you don't have server crashes as often (if ever) as you do with windows

VPC Version 6.0.1, Using 16 MB of VRAM and 512 MB RAM, Win 98
I'm using a Powermac G4 733, 896 MB RAM
Not sure how to tell FPS. I haven't gotten the internet game to work yet since my CD-Key's have been in use all the time. I'll try again now and tell you when I get on. The menus work a lot better since I upped the RAM from 256 MB to 512 MB in VPC. They work just as fast as a real PC would now.

cs is available in linux.. i get 100fps at 800x600.
(amd 1800xp, 512mb RAM, 64Mb DDR vid card)
cs is playable in linux by winex (www.transgaming.com)
basically you run the setup.exe off the install cdrom, and then run winex hl.exe
now whether winex has been ported to ppc is another question in itself.. it works on x86...
making x86 windows games run on x86 linux is one thing..it would be another feat in itself for transgaming to make x86 windows programs run on ppc linux..

I just want to know why, in general, Mac users are willing to kill for a CS port.
It's not that great of a game. Rainbow Six 3 is a far superior tactical shooter with much better realism and graphics.
Why do Mac heads have an obsession with CS? Why??

possibly because it is the most played game there is?

CS is just fun to play during a LAN party. Rainbow Six suffers in popularity from single player game mode in the earlier versions where planning missions seemed tedious to many people. I don't know if this was improved in RS3 since nobody I know has been willing to give it a chance.

but does 'most played' status make it a good game?

Yes, and there are modifications and it is just fun, with any computer (windows) back as old as 4-5 years can play it.

Counterstrike is better than anything else except BF:1942 - the new champion.
I never get tired of CS.

the reason so many want to play cs is because the cs community is much larger than the others (unreal and quake are there as well though). itīs not just the game on itīs own, but rather playing it with your friends and with people whoīve become your friends through the game. oh, itīs the most fun as well. :D

Yeah Counter Strike has a deep following because it can run on old computers as well as new ones.
I can see a deep divide when condition zero comes out though...

That's what I was about to say if you want to play PC games just instal Virtual PC. Although the preformance may be a little sloppy.

I think the only reason I want VPC is because I want to play Rollercoaster Tycoon again and the new sequel to it.
The new VPC coming out next yr is suppose to be faster then the 6.1 ver. out now and also cheaper.
How does windows games play in VPC on a dual 2GHz with 1-3GB's of ram and the 9800 Pro??
I would think with enough ram you should be able to play the games you want to play I think.

Nov 22, 2003, 06:02 PM
A 9800 pro is useless in VPC because there is not support for hardware acceleration.
Anyone with a fast PC can run CS in software rendering mode and call ************ on any VPC owner that says CS plays well on VPC. Sorry.
VPC does not support the G5 so don't even go there.

The next VPC is said to support G5 not sure if it will support graphics cards but it wouldn't be too hard for them to do it.

Check this at http://www.supercheats.com/mac.php under Top 25 Mac Games the second place.
Is this just a huge mistake of this site or is there finally a cs for mac???

It looks like the list is misleading. It appears that they list the hints that are accessed most often on their site, not the most popular games to play.

Why don't you build it then smarty. VPC is not designed for games. Hold your breath if you like, but you will be the only one.
