Only Nintendo would do sumthin' like this, that's why I love them.

I don't know if they planned to call it Wii from the beginning. I've heard from many sources that one of the reasons that Wii was chosen was that "we" sounded very personable especially compared to 360 or PS3. Assuming the same people worked on both this video and naming the system, it only makes sense that they felt by using "we" over and over they were being personal. Again, I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that this was all planned, but I wouldn't deny it either.

We expanded the definition of gameplay? Picture of the cube? Whilst I love my cube I dont think it expanded gameplay in any new way, shape or form.
The hookup to GBA was nominal at best, a bongo controller? mmm , a next gen mario game that wasn't AS good as any other Mario and no way near as monumental experience as Mario64........
We expanded the definition of wireless?
Wavebird. Chunky, No Rumble.... Really expanding the definition

Oh no. You don't bash the Wavebird.
The Wavebird was the first wireless controller on the market that had absolutely no lag through walls and decent reception and works as well as a wired controller. Nowadays Logitech also makes good wireless, but Nintendo beat them too it and was the first (and in fact only, not counting XBox 360) company to come out with first party wireless controllers.
Oh and I do agree, the video is annoying.

Yeah, I've always loved my Wavebird... best wireless pad I've ever used... and pretty much identical to the standard controller in layout. Awesome.

Yup, I rule :p
Actually, I did play through a wall. I had a friend stay in the room with the console and I went to see how far back I could go and still play.
Went to the opposite end of my house before it started skipping. Like two walls between me and the system.

This is from the Leipzig gaming conference in Germany, I think it was after E3 2005 when Nintendo showed the Revolution.
EDIT: August 17th, 2005. Yup. After E3.

Not true.
The Logitech wireless controllers for the PS2 and XBOX came out long before the WaveBird.
They also included rumble functions, with two settings.
And for the record, I dislike the Wavebird for that reason alone.
On the topic of the name for the console, I doubt they knew that early into it. Probably just a coincidence.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but Google tells me that the Logitech PS2 wireless controller came out on 09/17/2002, and the Wavebird's release date was 06/13/2002. That would put the Wavebird first. And either way, Wavebird is the first actually usable first-party wireless controller on the market.

Who cares who came first on consoles
Logitech & Gravis had cordless pc pads way before wavebird.
Logitech subsequent cordless xbox and ps2 pads are the best examples of pads.
The fact that Nintendo designed the rumble pack and changed the course of controller design, back in the early days of N64 (with lylat wars).
Then took that feature out of its cordless pad was taking a BIG step back for me.
Especially when you look at games like Animal Crossing or Zelda:Four Swords & Windwaker, where the rumble is an important feature for finding stuff, making the wavebird redundant if you want to experience the game as it was meant to be played.

*shrugs* I played through Wind Waker and part of Four Swords with no rumble (heck, I played through Four Swords in co-op using a GBA SP!).
Fact is that Nintendo made the first wireless console pad that was actually perfectly usable in any game with no glitches. Logitech came second. So, simply, don't diss it. You don't have to praise it, but don't diss it either. It was innovative.

Hey I love my nintedo. How many on this forum have a Q and over 150 cube games?
I am allowed to say if I think the wavebird was NOT inovative in my opinion. It doesnt change yours, i'm not even attempting to, but for me it wasn't great.
There were some problems with all cube pads, the digital pad is too small as well.
Compare the cube pad & wavebird to the N64 (first analogue & rumble) or the Snes pad (possibly the greatest digital pad ever created, and was innovated when they added 6 buttons for SF2) and you can see that it clearly has very little innovation in comparison. What does it do that the ps2 or xbox pad dont? How has it effected their subsequent design? Not at all....
How can you all of a sudden say don't knock the innovation of the lacklustre wavebird, and then dismiss the rumble as a non important facet of gameplay experience, when Nintendo themselves invented that....
You can have my wavebird, I'll keep my beautiful grey Panasonic Q pad :p :p :p :p

I never had a Wavebird :( The Wii will break my wireless controller virginity. It was always the battery side that let me down. I don't want to be playing a game and have it die on me.
Though technically, the NES did have a wireless controller too. Though infrared. So it was far from what we're used to now with non-directional wireless.

That's very ostentatious of you. You're entitled to your opinion but does the fact that you own more Nintendo items than average, make your opinions more valuable? I think not :p It was innovative because it was made by the first party, and presented it as such without glitches and problems. Other companies didn't do that. Nintendo presented something new to the console "war" so that makes it innovative.

You're missin' out. They take a hella long time for the batteries to run out. And the probability that it will run out in a dire time is probably pretty small. If tha does happen i'm sure you can live with it. :D

It was a reply in response to being told not to diss the wavebird controler. I was saying that just because I dont like the wavebird doesnt mean I dont love nintendo, enough to invest in a nice cube.
i was in no way saying my opinion counted more than anyone elses, which was quite clear in the rest of the post. If you could only read more than 1 sentance before judging.

I also hate rumble... I wish the system itself had a preference setting for that... The games should default to the system setting (so I don't have to go disable the damn thing every time I start a new game). Same goes for the "invert Y" setting.

Blah, you are a confused little man. I haven't changed my Wavebird's battery in over a year. On top of that, when it does die, the light starts getting dimmer, and when it dies, there's still always enough power to turn it off, on, and pause.

Ah thats good. See thats something they need to change the belief of. Wireless controllers, wireless anything just makes me think short battery life. It's so just a preconception, and I do have a tendency to worry about the smallest things like that.
If there is enough room for a Wavebird port on the Wii I'll fork out for one then. I just don't play my Cube enough now to warrant buying one.

Aye. It's mad how far we haven't come really. It's only been enhancements to what the NES brought to the table. Wireless controllers, 4 controller ports, keyboards, dance pads, online play, guns, modding, game download (well that was SNES). I always forget how good the NES was.
