I'm expecting mine in 2-3 weeks. I did see one again today at the Palo Alto Apple Store--it's in the window and there are none yet to "play" with (I liked what I saw at MacWorld). The Powerbook commercial was playing on it and I noticed how impressive the screen size is, how it can cover your main field of vision. It was hard to tell the brightness as it was in the window--I'm sure you can adjust it--aren't these the same screens as in iMacs? But I think it will serve my needs well. It's just that damn long wait that Apple makes us go through!

So...why don't you post pics of the BACK of the screen then.

How about the box you got it in...that is you HAVE a box, right?

Pics of unpacking it will shut all of us nonbelievers up right away, and improve your rep.

Think I might wait a while though, see if there are any glitches. Can I wait? Not sure.

I just followed the MacMall link in the email and the ad says "please call"for shipping. They might be being a little liberal with the truth.

Yow. Macmall - if recollection serves - is an outfit that can ship next day if orders are in by some reasonable hour... that means one could have a 17" on Friday if ordering tomorrow. I still haven't heard that they've made it to the local apple store (tyson's corner, VA).

Didn't Jobs at MWSF say that the 17" PB used the same screen as the 17" iMac (packaged differently of course and with a different resolution)?

Or are they completely different widescreens made by completely different companies?

So if they're the same..just gawk at an iMac....

Over Achiever
Feb 12, 2003, 11:16 PM
They are the same screen, but the backlight it different. The backlight on the powerbook is thinner then the one on the iMac, so it won't be as bright.

Also there are power comsumption considerations...so overall I would expect the screens to be not as bright as the iMac, unless the screen on the iMac wasn't bright at all. In that case then they will look the same.

Probably noticably faster. Of course if you're running an oddball application the P3 could be faster.

In all likelyhood the 17"PB will be much faster.

seriously, TELL US ABOUT IT MOFO! :D run
xbench. how snappy is that thing with 10.2.4?
my 667 runs great under it. about every two to
three months the system seems to slow because
ive become use to the speed of the machine.
the first time i needed to reformat and reinstall
jagaur instead of doing the simple update...and
it was so much better. and now just a few days
ago i though hmmm this powerbook is nice but
it would be better to have a system with some
real horsepower....10.2.4 has shown me that
my powerbooks potential is slowly being revealed
with these updates. thank god. maybe my
system will continue to get faster:D

thanks apple.

It's not nice to brag, Ubergeek.

Oh, yeah.

We're talking about AluPowerbooks here. Okay, that's a different story. :D

However, if you REALLLY, and TRULLY have a 17" PB, at least do us all a courtesy and post a picture of the back of the laptop as some sort of proof to keep the other users at bay.

If not, sacrifice your 17" by sending it to each of us in turn so we can try it out... ahem!

j/k. Hope you really do have it now. It must be sheer pleasure.

Yep. I remember back in the day when I turned a toaster oven into my current G3 desktop with a pair of match sticks. Friends called me "McGeneGiver" then and that was a good day, let me tell you...

I also remember when I invented the postage stamp. Nobody would believe me that I did it... But heck, there's just tons of envious people out there who wished they could have done it first, so, I figure, I'm A-okay in my book. And so is Ubergeek. :D

A life? Well, the computer and internet easily sucks one in.

So sorry to see you feel down. We all can go through this at one time or another (yours truly). And meaning is not always apparent. I think even when there is no apparent meaning, you have to go on, do things. We weren't meant to sit still. And that is a step in the right direction--to create a positive momentum. That is sometimes the best we can do and what we must do. The momentum will carry you forward. Talking with a good friend(s) helps more than you think--because you can't carry all the weight on your shoulders--and because they can be a reality check when you are off-center (like in a negative relationship).

I came to realize that I can't ultimately answer what is the meaning of life (or beyond)...other than living it. Stick to your core values while you live your life. And have faith you will find better waters. Realize that you can't look more than a few feet ahead (especially in these times), but that doesn't mean you won't be surprised by something good. Even though you may be down now, in a week, or a month, things could completely change and you'll never look back.

Hang in there!

Ubergeek isn't it funny how these macrumor threads can turn personal? I like that about this site, because after all we are human beings, not just machines whose lives consist only of acquiring other machines, (much as we love them).

Life has a way of changing overnight - as I'm experiencing first hand. I used to think about next week, next month, next year etc, but now all I'm thinking about is Chloe's next feed and nappy change.

Leukemia is a real bummer though, and I don't want to belittle what you're going through. Make the most of each day as it comes. "Tomorrow has enough troubles of it's own" (Matthew chapter 6, verse 34).

Chloe's doing fine Uber. She's got a little bit of jaundice, but that's getting better each day. I'm just trying to get back to normal, but doing it in two hour intervals! (time between feeds).

RE: Uber's cellphone
It's mind boggling how smart and how hip these younger generations are. Man. When I was in high school (many, many, many moons ago) the only thing on the market were those big brick-sized phones. Remember those? They cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. And now? We go disposable ones.

Ubergeek...any info on the supposed 15" Aluminum PowerBook?

etoiles
Feb 17, 2003, 01:13 PM
sorry to be so blatantly down to earth (just talking about computers here ;) ), but why is apple only using mediocre graphics cards in their laptops ? I mean, if I dish out over 3K for a 17 powerbook, I can probably afford an extra coupe hundred for a nice nvidia quadro solution that actually lets me run MAYA and other 3D apps at a decent speed...

The 17" could become THE mobile 3D workstation of choice for a whole industry ! Currently there is pretty much only the Dell M50 and Fujitsu Celsius in that market, both costing more than the 17" (and of course look like cr@p). Oh lord, don't make me buy a Dell...:(

janey
Feb 18, 2003, 01:32 AM

Just a quick question to those out there who already have, or who have seen the 17". How big does this thing feel? Is it a real portable or is it a 'stays on the desktop' type laptop?

I'm planning on making this my first real apple purchase (other than the iPod that is :) ) begun saving up already

The M50 has the Quadro4 700 go, but it even beats some 'desktop workstations' out there... http://www.spec.org/gpc/opc.data/vp7/summary.html

Zaid-

For me it's the difference between being stuck behind a 70lb monitor in my office or having a laptop so I could work out on a nice day or in the livingroom while the TV is on. The weight is the same or less than my old Pismo laptop.

I think it's more of a "movable" computer, rather than a "portable". :)

I have seen two in person. The weight may not be a big deal (it's the same as my Pismo with two batteries), but the sheer size of it will be. It could be cumbersome to some people (including me).

I use my laptop 8 hours a day at work on an iCurve stand. I then take it home, and use it on my lap, on my kitchen table, on a desk in the office, or in bed. In that respect, I really just move the computer from place to place. I don't need the most portable machine. I need the most screen real estate.

For for most people, the 12" might be too small and the 17" might be too big. The old and possible new 15" could be just right. If you want the most portability, get the 12". If you want a mix of portability and screen resolution, get the 15". If you want the most screen, get the 17".

Zaid
Feb 18, 2003, 01:57 PM
I think that I would probably want a movable one rather than true portable. I wouldn't be using it on the go as such, rather I'd just like it to go with me, easily. So from what you say the 17" should be fine.

Anyway just a bit of initial opinion gathering as I'll have probably only have saved up for it around August. :)

Thanks for the help. :)

janey
Feb 18, 2003, 06:56 PM
the 17" powerbook totally made windows users switch. It's very very portable and when me and some of my friends compared laptops...the screen was soo much bigger, none of the laptops had 802.11b (forget about 802.11g and bluetooth!), and the fact that you're using an Apple laptop was totally unbeatable.

I use it every day to code and to play with.

Silly PCs. ;)

You'll need to try the ALT codes. Hold down ALT and then try a 3 digit code (I'm pretty cure it will be somewhere between 130 and 160).

That help?

hold alt then hit 0220 on the numbers on the right of the keyboard not the ones on top of the letters

Man, I cant wait for that 17'' beauty.

A friends just got his new compaq evo800w which is supposed to be their flagship-laptop, guess if that **** works... NO, it gets lots of graphic artifacs, blue screens and **** like that.

I'm so happy I did not buy one of those peesees.
Lets just hope we all get our toys some day. (summer day)
