I have this weird folder named "sw" in my Finder Window and I have no idea what it does or what is doing in the location it is in.

It's located in the Applicatons, Library, [weird folder name "sw"], System, and Users in the Finder window under column view.

Here's what's in the "sw" folder:

sw --> this folder named "lib" --> files named: libcryto.0.9.6.dylib, libcurl.2.0.2.dylib, libcurl.2.dylib, libdl.0.dylib, libssl.0.9.6.dylib

What is this thing?

What does it do?

I don't think that it's supposed to be in this location?

Thanks for the help!

do you have a lot of 3rd party programs and utilities? i'm guessing it's part of an install package... i know i don't have it, so at very least it's not essential to the system...

you could probably delete it, but a program might stop working properly...

Thanks for your help.

I deleted the folder, restarted, and everything seems fine. All my Apps open.

I wonder what that folder was? Who knows?

Do you have .Mac? Did you recently install Virex 7.2? I also had that folder appear, and it appeared right after I installed Virex 7.2. Apparently, it's some kind of add-on that doesn't install right. If you delete the folder and restart, it'll fix the add-on's problem.

Seems to be fine...everything except Virex 7.2. It won't start!

I'll reinstall it...

Hmmmm....I'm just now finding out that my Virex 7.2 also won't start!

Darn! I guess that sw folder is needed so Virex will work.

We don't really need one, since nobody writes mac viruses. But, it's just nice knowing that protection is there, just in case. :)

Yea, I'm not really sure that I need Virus software, but I guess I can use it as a safety net.

What I don't understand about Virex is the "search for virus function". Shouldn't the protection be in the Mail App where potental virus' could enter the system? Maybe a screen should display asking if you wanted to scan a file before opening it?

Oh, is there a website where Mac virus definitions are displayed?

If you don't know what a file is, do a google search for it.

Better than hosing your system cuz you think some random file or directory is meaningless.

This goes double if you have to use root access to delete it.

The most important use of a Virus scanner is so you don't infect your PC using friends.

Also, if it scans for things like MS Word macro viruses, and you use Word, a virus scanner could come in handy.

That's a good point. I've never even heard about someone having a virus with a mac, but on the othet hand; my pc friends are all been infected once at least.
