Doesn't look as sleek - or as small - as some of the original pics (the one's with the boomerang controller) which is a bit of a shame IMO. I would (and still may) get a PS3 as a Blu-Ray DVD player, but it looks a bit fugly now...

Meh, I'm sure the Bluray drive causes for a little more space, and I bet Sony is also compensating for heat issues ahead of time with a little bit bigger chassy. Something MS obviously didn't do.

I'm getting one regardless.

I never thought I'd consider my 360 "sleek" and "refined," but that P$3 is just fugly. :)

I also like the ability to change 360 faceplates and "skin" the console.

From what I hear the 360's heat issues are in the power supply, not the unit itself. I don't have one, so I could be remembering it all wrong.

That's pretty much what the case was with some of the early 360's. I've never had the problem myself thankfully!
Wonder if the PS3 power supply is internal rather than a power brick... could explain some more of the extra bulk?

Keeping the brick well ventilated and not trapped in a confined space seems to be key. Neither I, nor anyone I know with a 360, have had any overheating issues so it's tough to say.

If you compare the PS3 with it's earlier prototype, it looks like Sony added a lot of vents for cooling. That seems to be the biggest difference, but the new one is a little wider.

I agree with the previous poster in that I think both consoles look nice. The only reason I'm not getting a PS3 at launch is because of the price. Plus, the only PS3 exclusive game that intrigues me is Assassins Creed (I believe that's the name).

I like the silver design more. The black just looks larger and less "friendly" due to its industrial design.

I like the silver one better too. But the black one reminds me of the PS2. It's like seeing a familiar face while in a distant land. It makes things feel like home.

Ah, nice catch Grapes!

As far as the 360 goes. There IS a heat issue with the machine itself. Why do you think the fans are louder than christ? That's why I'm on number 3. The first two had a heat sink that popped and would lock the machine almost instantly after boot. If not it would take a couple of minutes (when there was no disc in the machine). THis is why MS is modifying the cooling system in the machine soon.

Just hope the PS3 laser doesnt suffer as much as the ps2. I'm on my fourth Ps2, the others all dead from laser failure. And I keep my discs in pristine condition (no scratches at all)......

PS3 will probably be as loud and power hungry as the 360. Have you seen the size of standalone BluRay machines. They are that size for a reason.

Silver is nicer, I think the black looks too much like the ps2 and i've never been a fan of its blocky design..

Well, my 3rd unit isn't as bad as the first two at all. The fans kick up every now and then very briefly, usually when loading a disc, but then it stops. So it probably was an earlier issue that they may have corrected with one of the recent firmware updates...

Big, loud. No wonder MS wants you to get a Wii. Most people probably don't have room for a PS3 and 360! Looking on my desk now I could only squeeze in a 360, stick a Wii vertical next to the wall.

and I thought the 360 was big :o no offence to them, they have to fit a lot in there. but it still doesn't change the outcome of "big".

That's the main reason I'm disappointed with the redesign. In its original format it would look very much at home with my Sky+ HD box, and a Hi Def TV, but the new version seems to be the offspring of the PS3 concept and the original PS2!

These things aren't designed with your desk in mind, their designed for those who have entertainment centers. LCD screens on a computer desk don't really count as their main choice for designing these things. To play in true 5.1 surround sound you'd need A/V receiver anyway...

V.True. Funny thing! with these consoles though, my 360 with a disc in (its fairly quiet without) is louder than my DLP projector and that's as noisy as hell, even on economy setting. I have to have the Dolby Digital turned up just to drown out the noise of the two together, still gives you a 6x4 foot HD picture and that's just amazing :D

Add the tempreture from both the 360 and the Projector and it's like sitting in a sauna :) No wonder my electricty bill is so high :p

The images of the back of the systems also shows us that the PSU is built in. I'm not sure I like that idea now that systems are consuming so much power. On a PC the PSU is one of the most common things to fail...

MS was definitely thinking smart when they left it out as well as deciding to make the HDD detachable/upgradable.

Personally I think the PS3 looks horrible, as did the PS2, and PS1. The PSOne (small white revision of PS1) was the only design I thought was actually nice. It also didn't have any problems and was virtually silent.

My 360, honestly I don't notice it being that loud... I have it vertical.

well after the prototype didn't have any ventilation holes at all it was pretty clear that they had to do something about that.. and it was already rumored before E3 that sony can't fit in the components into the former design so they had to increase it

The PS3 is really ugly!! It looks just like the PS2 which is sooo yesterday!!

I'll be getting a Revolution, no question. I might pick up a PS3 or XBox 360 later on when the HD-DVD/Bluray fight has been one and if HD players hasn't come down. I'd buy it for the 'cheap' hd playerness of it though, not for the games although I might pick one or two up if they really interest me.

Why is the slot on the newer one longer than the old one? Disks have not changed in size????

Why the removal of lots of plug-in slots in the back????

I don't like the curved top- I can't stack game cases on top of my ps3- I only have so much space above my TV.

I lay mine flat- TV is too big to have space next to it in the TV stand which is a good thing!:D

On my PS2, I keep the back switch set to "on" all the time. I rarely if ever use, but it's there if by some chance I do need it. I have the front button that I use when I want to turn on or off the PS2. From what I've read the PS3 works the same way. It's not much any different than many newer PCs. They have a on/off switch on the front, but a switch built-in to the power supply. You almost never touch it, but it's there if you need it. You get the best of both worlds this way.

the wii seems to be the only well designed console. and even then i preferred the revolution case. the 360 tries so hard but in doing so fails to achieve its goal of copying apple (ms just cant help themselves:D ). its simple and sleek (well as sleek as a console the size of yellow pages can be) but oh so un-subtle. the ps3 is trying to look friendlier by being curvy, but also want to remind people its a playstation to grab whatever brand loyalty is left. it obviously didn't take them long to fuse those two ideas, as seen by the results. what they forgot is that the ps2 was the least attractive console ever until xbox was released. sega were always quite good, aslong as you ignore the saturn. dreamcast probably being their best.

For everyone comparing the 360 to the PS3, don't forget what the 360 will look like when the added HD-DVD drive is put next to it. I don't have a picture of either, so I can't show what it will look like, I'm sure someone else can do that to give us a better idea of what the two 360 components will look like next to each other.

Once we have that, then I think it is fair to compare the look of the two consoles.

Don't think I am a Sony fan or anything, I am a die-hard XBox fan, just wanted to point out that it is not fair to compare the 360 to the PS3 without the extra drive.

The side angle of the PS3 is just horrendous. I mean really.

Hmm I like that black industrial look. Secondly, ive always like grand turismo games and that has been my reason for getting the playstation. I can't wait till grand turismo 5 (better be one in the making or i be unhappy)

I like that the ps3 will be able to play blu ray dvds.

Hmm I like that black industrial look..

The Powermac G5 is a perfect example of great industrial style design,

The PS3 is not industrial, it's a black plastic breadbin with ventilation holes.

:D :D :D
