Not sure if anyone posted this, but the gameplay on the new Super Mario for Wii looks absolutely amazing. This is really making me itch for a Wii. Here's the link:

Looks freakin awesome. This Yosih's Island 2, and SSBB are the games that got me drooling. The planetary concept of this game looks so cool. And the ability to use the pointer to interact with the environment makes it awesome. I can't wait.

I haven't played any games in the Mario series since Super Mario World/All-Stars on the SNES. I hope the N64 Mario games are cheap to get on Virtual Console so I can give them a whirl before trying out this one.

Holy nora I'm in love and I've only seen 30 seconds!

See the way I look at this is Nintendo made perfect Mario games left right and flippin centre. They made 1 doozy (as seen by most people) - Sunshine. Nintendo know what they can do with Mario to make it good. frankly I'd be surprised if 100% of their Mario platform games were perfect.

anywho. those graphics look superb! one thing that gets me about the Wii is the amazing lighting. especially in games like this, it really aids the cartoon look.

I liked it! I think it is very underrated, mostly by those who barely played it, as is common.

Sprites/Stars... same thing in the end just a different look. Nearly all mario games have had some sort of "attachment" involved and people didn't complain... Leaf (SMB3, racoon), Teddy Bear (SMB3, stone), Cape (SMW), Wings (Mario 64), Jet Pack (Sunshine).

For some reason sunshine never take to me...i got it home and i played it like 3 times:( ...i just don't like it. This one seems to have some more beef to it with better gameplay.

What I don't think a lot of people know is that the "clean-up" part of the game is not throughout the entire things and is plays out to be more of a story device then anything.

Edit: This post is regarding Super Mario Sunshine.

I loved it :) but what did you expect

seriously it was a very playable game. Very difficult though, I've yet to find someone who has 100%ed it. I found the level design absurdly good, I mean they were beautiful, well positioned, just perfect. The music was catchy. The FLUDD thing was a pain at first but it grew on me.

Back to Galaxy though.
I LOVE THE MUSIC. Seriously. that beautiful, beautiful track playing just before the boss is amazing (specifically the bit where Mario is luring a Bullet Bill to the star, with the glockenspiel and the string bit, very old-Zelda like). It's so floaty and way better than anything I've heard in a game since... Mario World? And the BOSS! WOW. It's so huge, so Nintendo. I cannot wait for this game.
I haven't heard yet, IS THIS GAME A LAUNCH TITLE? If so then I have my 3 launch title games solidified (Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Twilight Princess).

SuperMario sunshine is NOT hard. That said I had some trouble with the final bowser fight as when I smashed the edges of the platform I couldn't climb back up easy and I would get to an edge and it would mess me up. But my second time through it was easy, so who knows.

This mario looks like a joke. What is the point of a platformer when you can't fall off the platform? Its like Mario is running around with magnetic boots on. When he's climbing the boss and you see the swirling gears and he just jumps over it, its like the game is playing itself.

Sorry, but from what I've seen this mario looks super watered down and not remotely challenging or fun. Mario 64 for ever!

Finally looks like a return to the lore of SM64. Sunshine was a gorgeous game, but ultimately unengaging and very difficult for the casual gamer to get into. I think galaxy will succeed where interim games have failed. :D

Can't wait to buy it.

I dunno, I stuggled and fought my way to Mario 64 on the N64. I breezed through it on the DS. Sunshine I just find a little too difficult... and I beat Halo 1 on Legendary and FarCry on the second to last difficulty! I dunno, I probably didn't blend well with some new elements or something. I found the final boss very easy though *insert strange emoticon* but fail to 100% it.

You can fall off. You can fall into those 'black hole' pits in the middle of planets. can't you see them? in the video nobody fell in them.

Indeed, I remember other forums at that time. People were goin crazy. Now? It's basically gone besides people that are learning about the name now, and if they are, it doesn't show much credibility to them since it's been so long. I knew it was a going to subside, but there's always going to be the few, the proud, the ignorant.

I loved Sunshine, in fact it was one of my favorites ever. The only really frustrating thing for me was the fact that there was no way in the game (that i knew of) which you could use to find out what levels you got what amount of blue coins from. I had (have since i never deleted it off my memory card) 119 shine sprites and needed like 6-8 blue coins in various levels and couldn't find out where i was missing them. I was so mad because i wanted to finish the game but running around to where they were supposed to be wasn't doing anything  That being said, I can still say it was a great game, even if sprites sound really lame :p

I'd also guess that this level is more about familiarising yourself with the controls/perspective/environments. Just a place to play around and get tips on different moves before hitting the game proper. Much the same as Mario 64 where you are progressively lead into the action and more difficult situtations. It's Mario's bread and butter.

Aye, another thing I noticed was the game starts off (on one video) on a non-rounded planet. It looked identical to Mario 64/Sunshine style normal levels. My guess is they're in there too for the normal bits.

Yeah I don't think you can find out (in the US version at least). I've been google searching because now i want to know and i found this (http://www.n-sider.com/articleview.php?articleid=126).

Interestingly, I had heard that the US and Japanese versions of Super Mario Sunshine do not include any indication of how many Blue Coins have been collected in each level, making it very difficult to know exactly where that least elusive Blue Coin can be found. I notice, however, that the PAL version does indeed include a Blue Coin counter for each level. So, it is definitely a most welcome addition for European and Australian gamers.

i'm going to keep looking though...:(

EDIT: found this:
Press the START BUTTON to raise the PAUSE MENU and the display on the top left corner expands to show the COLLECTED SHINE SPRITES and COLLECTED BLUE COINS as well as the number of COINS collected. So i'll do a bit more searching and try that...maybe i'll finally beat that game fully!

PS: i too got 120 stars in Super Mario 64 ;)

The only problem I have is, I got an XBOX 360 the day it was released and I've just got bored of it?! I got two games: Call of Duty2 and Project Gotham Racing and I think I've played it like twice in the past month. I liked sunshine, and I didn't think it was too hard. Seriously the hover pack makes the game almost too easy when you have it. Once you learn the turning jump+hover trick you can get almost anywhere in the game. Some of the hard parts are the challenging levels where you don't have the water pack, those are tricky, mainly on the first time through. That and the electric manta ray you have to douse in water, tough stuff.

I like my 360, but the titles I want are not out yet. I'm looking forward to Forza 2 and Halo 3. COD2 I liked and played through on Veteran. PGR I didn't get into so that game just sits there, I just didn't like the racing mechanics coming from games like Forza and Grand Turismo. Dead or Alive I like, but its too damn hard. To get points you have to unlock everything and be a bad ass online. I rarely play online so this isn't for me. I recently picked up PDZ for having a party 360 shooter, but I don't really like the game.

That's me. I was always knew I was going to get the Revolution for sure, probably a 360, and a PS3 if I could afford the silly thing.

I haven't purchased a 360 yet, but will in the next few months. I'll get PGR3 and Call of Duty to tide me over until Halo 3.

The instant they start taking preorders for the Wii, I'll go and get mine. That and whichever of the games I'm drooling over are going to for sure be launch titles.

Well all he was doing was running and jumping so I think we can assume he was using the nunchaku controller and no motion sensors. But in the video advertisement for the Wii, there is a clip of a Japanese girl playing it and she's waving her hand around and deflecting fireballs. So who knows what it will turn out to be.

Joystiq.com describes the controls/gameplay in this article (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/10/wii-impressions-super-mario-galaxy/):

Though players have long become accustomed to controlling Nintendo's iconic and portly plumber, Super Mario Galaxy marks somewhat of a departure from that tradition. You still control Mario's movements with the analogue stick on the left nunchuck, but the wiimote in your right hand actually allows you to exert an influence on the world itself. A little on-screen star indicates where the wiimote is pointing and by holding down the B-button, you can grab onto various items and structures. For instance, if you run the cursor through a patch of flowers, it willl gently rustle in reaction to the presence of your invisible hand. While you have Mario running and jumping about and doing his usual platforming, you can manipulate objects in the environment in order to help him out.

The game world seems to be comprised of a bunch of little planets floating in space, with Mario seeking out different ways to travel between them. One method of transportation is what appears to be a giant elastic plant. Mario climbs to the top and, using your wiimote, you grab onto the plant, stretch it into one direction and then release the button to have Mario slingshot to a different panet. It's an extremely intuitive experience and really creates the impression that you are reaching into Mario's little universe and making things a little easier for him. You can also stun and tip over the meandering Goombas by running your cursor across them, allowing Mario to finish them off with a good 'ole butt-stomp.

Mario's usual repertoire of moves remains intact, with a vigorous shake of the wiimote activating a furious spinning attack. It's effective for clobbering enemies and activating the various star lifts scattered across the levels. The levels themselves look excellent from a graphical standpoint, boasting some stylish lighting effects and crisp and colorful textures. As far as depictions of plumbers in outer space go, I'd say this is probably the best one I've seen. Super Mario Galaxy really does make up for a lot of the graphical shortcomings of other Wii games. In fact, its unusual and engaging control system provides provides one of the best glimpses of the system's potential we've seen so far.

I guess we can't say for sure.

A pulsating black orb with red smoke in the middle of a planetoid?

"Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light."

"Total protonic reversal."

"Right. That's bad. Okay. All right. Important safety tip. Thanks, Egon."

The holes on that planet are dangerous... IGN has a new video up (actually from a couple of days ago, but I just noticed it) with some commentary while one of their editors plays the game.

There are also a couple of other newer videos to watch... check out "E3 Demo Walkthrough", "Exploring Space" and "Spider Boss". The graphics and gameplay of this look great:
