a variant on the beer thread, a few of my current favorties are
Penfolds 2001 Koonunga Hill Cabernet-Merlot about $11
Yellow Tail 2001 Shiraz about $9
and
Houge 2001 Columbia Valley Gewurtztraminer about $10
We drink wine often so I usually don't spend much on something I'm going to consume soon, but even though I know very little about wine with a little research you can find some really nice wines at a good value.

I really like Penfolds wines, it's a good Australian wine. I myself tend to spend a little more one wine usually, it's usually worth it, but you are right in that there are plenty of wine values to be found such as the ones you've listed.
Right now my favorite wine is by Ridge Vineyards the 99 California Lytton Estate Syrah which I belive goes for $35, a friend gave me a case recently and its wonderful.

Penfold's Grange-Hermitage is amazing. They have another one, I believe Bin 389, that's basically a lower priced version of it. It's also really niiiice.

i think the most popular whine here is:
"c'mon apple, you're (sic) machines are getting slower! intel is kicking your butt! if you don't fix this i'm going back to pc! we won't put up with this anymore!"

Never had the Penfolds - might have to try a bottle. I buy all types, cheap and not so cheap - in general though, I'm partial to Zins, had one the other night, quite good, but I'll have to dig around later for the bottle to remember the name.
Don't drink much white, but a good Gewurtztraminer with some spicy food is always nice.

My wife likes a good dry wine, red or white. She usually purchases it by the case, then she gets a 10% discount. The store where she goes freqently has a salesman knows what she likes and make recomendations.

I'm partial to reds, but Sterling Savaugn Blanc is always welcome at my table.
Medea: I had the Yellow tail Shiraz-Cab-Sav (purple label) the other day, and its excellent.
Fat Bastard makes good stuff, and I realy like Jest Red, which is a blend of four grapes that represent the leftovers of this Clifornia winery.

I don't know if this plonk is available outside of California, but probably the greatest wine bargain of all time is Charles Shaw. It's being carted out of Trader Joes stores by the caseload these days at $1.99 a bottle (Merlot, Cab, and S. Blanc). Is it a "great" wine? No, but it drinks like just about anything you'd find, foreign or domestic, in $6.00-10.00 range.

I've had Fat Bastard before...I found it to be a bit dry and weak in flavor myself...
it's funny though...what I think tastes mavhelous...usually ends up tasting dry to most...weird...

Opus One. Great Merlot really. I love it. Not too expensive, and wonderful body, flavor, and aroma.

A great red wine you should try is Cadence 1999 Red Mountain Tapteil Vineyard about $35, it's incredible and very "energetic."

i really like those beringer white zinfandels for blush wine and, say, merlots for red. i've heard that chiantis are good too, but the ones i tried were much too bitter for me.
i'm not even 21 (drink wine at meals with my dad now and then, though i like wine more than he does); are the white zinfandel things really common/well-liked, or is that just me?
this is a cool thread . i'll have to get my dad to try some of these.

The different states have all kinds of wierd restrictions on importing, exporting wines. There was something about this i the news the other day, some kind of relaxing of regulations, but I can't find it now to save my life.

Wow! I used to drink that on the way to the pub, I'd buy it at the "offy" en route to keep the chill from my toes. It was like an early version of an alco-pop drink and came in a glas hip flask shaped bottle, I think they came in citrus flavours a bit like the coloured iMac thing, certainly got the teen vote. I think the greenish yellow grapefruit was my fav.:)

I've honestly always been afraid to look through the wine section, I dont know whats good or not and I didnt want someone to go "oh your not actually going to drink that are you!?" Its always been easier to choose wine when out to dinner, but thanks for all your recommendations here, ill write them down and look for them.
one step at a time.;)

An employee at a decent liquor store is usually more than happy to suggest something if you let them know what your budget is and what you're going to be drinking it with. Nothing wrong with being a wine newbie...just means that you'll never get bored drinking the stuff!
