Can someone give me a quick rundown on how to do accents, tildes, umlauts, etc.?

Cliche, manana, uber -- look how plain they look. Help me spice it up.

They are formed using the alt key usually

For the à use the ` key while holding alt, and then press the a.

For the other direction use e and hold alt, as in cliché.

"i" gives you î
"a" is å
"u" is ü (über)
"o" is ø

the woes of a french student.....

sorry if there are mistakes, it's late!

about manana, I don't take Spanish, so I don't know where the ñ goes but it's just N and alt as well.

In Applications -> Utilities there is an application called "Key Caps".

Run this.. hold down the alt(option) key. It will show you what characters you can get from your keyboard while holding down the alt key. Five of the keys are outlined in white. These are combo keys, so alt-e followed by an e will give you a é. All the combo keys work the same way. Hold down the shift and the alt key to see what characters you have access to there.
