Warranty info?

I am planning on getting a mac very soon, but upgrading memory from apple right aways is expensive. If I were to install memory on my own, would that void the warranty?
If so, could I get it installed by a apple certified reseller or a computer specialist with out it voiding the warranty?
Does the one year warranty cover laptop screens?

installing memory yourself does not void the warranty. you can take it to an apple store for tem to do it for you, minimizing the risk of breaking something, but they'll charge you for the service. what kind of mac are you planning on getting?

I think I want to get a 17" Powerbook, cause I travel a lot. I will need as much memory as possible cause I will be using it mainly for video editing(FCP) and Photoshop. If I decide to go for a desktop I will get a refurb. dual 1Ghz MDD G4 and a 17" apple display, maybe the 20".

RAM and Hard Drives (and a few other things) fall under a category Apple calls "User-Installable Parts". You will not void your warranty replacing these things, and you can save a buck or two. I sound like a 10-10-220 commercial now.

Actually, I've decided to get the Dual 1GHz with 17in Apple Display. I went to the only apple reseller here in town and talke to a salesguy there, and like you said installing ram and hard drive wont void the warranty. I am ordering it at the end of next week:D

but remember. if its not their ram it wont be covered under warranty. this can be bad sometimes. because sometimes bad ram can get you a kernel panic, and if apple looks at it and finds out its ram, it will cost a lot because it wasnt your ram. but then on the other side chances are this will never happen to you. i would just buy some ram from crucial or something and put it in yourself, it will make you feel good doing it yourself.

You didn't say which type of Mac you are getting. if it's the iMac G4, you might want to get 512MB single DIMM since you're not allowed to upgrade that memory.

In truth, any Mac where you have the option, get 512MB one dimm. This gives you one stick of Apple memory, getting this won't cost much more than getting third party memory. And if you have a problem, you can pull out the non-Apple memory and try it.

If you had a 256 meg dimm that you pulled out, you'd have to keep track of it in case you had problems.

Only the RAM and the Airport card is user installable on laptops.

yeah, in laptops, there are fewer things you can do without voiding warranty. and imacs are even more restrictive in general...

whereas powermacs have more versatility... video cards, airport, hard drives, ram...
