They look v. eye catching. As always from Apple they never tell you too much about the computer or the advantages it has over the Wintel ones (or that they are compatible). They will get noticed I'm sure, but something addressing the Mac Myths would be nice too.

Also, if you have the creative source thaat Pixar provides - should we perhaps have seen more that a dancing computer? Well, I like what they've done and I am certain they will go down in ad-history as absolutely unique!

Wow...

And we thought it looked like Luxo Jr. before!
Seeing it rendered by Pixar makes it REALLY look like Luxo Jr.

I don't know.. would I rather buy a computer from some annoying little twerp telling me "dude, you're getting a Dull!" or would I be more inclined towards a friendly little iMac bee-bopping around... hmmm.. decisions decisions.. well, it passed the cuteness test.. two females in the household were like "oh, that's sooo cute!".. For those who want the "myths" addressed.. look in the Brochure.. it does go there a bit.

First, the ads are cute as all get-out, and it's funny how all of us were calling it iLuxo way before these ads came out. Either Apple got its own joke, or they hung out here and figured "Hey, good idea!"

It's an interesting take, these ads. Not heavy handed by any means, no mention of the feature set, processor speed...nothing. No droning voiceover of a smartassed jerk claiming superiority (although it did work for the first iMac). Not to mention they weren't expensive ads to make, either, assuming they were done at Pixar.;)

Years after the first Mac made its debut, there were many analysts stating that the reason they didn't fly off the shelves by the millions was that after the initial flurry of buying, much of the computer-seeking public (read: business) actually viewed the machine as "too cute" and therefore not a computer for serious work. Apple succeeded in capturing the imagination, but not "the workplace."
It looks as if Apple is going for that type of strategy again, because if you knew NOTHING about Macintosh and the "digital hub" concept and saw this ad, your opinion towards it might be quite different.

However, I'm not one to second guess the strategy. I'm a 43 year old male in the education business and have been around Macs nearly half my life; this ad isn't geared towards those of my ilk, but those over my shoulder - one of the most difficult generations to sell to. In that respect, while it may seem that revisiting that "cute" gray area could result in derision and scoff, from the comments I've seen so far, they're a hit. (of course, this IS a Macintosh arena, but we're not above a little Apple bashing ourselves from time to time - 'cause we Love 'em So.):)

Well, enough pontificating from THIS blow-hard...I tip my hat to Apple for not going the usual route. How my eyes glaze over when I see the "specs" of those PeeCee montrosities scoll on the tv screen while some zit faced droid punk calls us "Dude" and thinks we should be oh-so-GRATEFUL for gettin' a Dull.

But hey...aren't THOSE ads geared towards that same generation?

Or is it that, no matter what generation you may be from, there will always be those that "get it" (all of us) and those that just, well, don't?

(like, sorry for, like, gettin' all, like, in yer head and all psychological on all of you dudes...)

Very cool. I think it's a reflection of the fact that Macs Do have personality :) It doesn't take an animated 3D rendering to prove it to US, but some people out there still don't get it. And for us, it's fun and cool to watch.

Okay. I think the new iMac is as cool as the next guy--It's a gorgeous design, a phenominal configuration, at an amazing price--but those ads friggin suck. They look awful. Looks like a fawking student project. If I saw that thing in my house, I'd be setting traps. I am so disappointed it's ridiculous.

C'mon...Apple is the meaning of style. The have one of the top five brands in the world. And all they can do is come out with this? This is not brand-consistent. This has zero consumer benefit. And I think it took a big fat whiff on likeability.

The dancing one doesn't even look like dancing. I pray that pixar didn't do these. Because I know for a fact they have more talent than this.

The animation on the roll-out video was 50x better.

I pray these never see the airwaves.

i'm not sure about these being 'official' iMac ads. They seem more like something some guy (or gal) at pixar undertook as a joke, it got shown to Steve Jobs, he liked it, it got put on the apple web site. I think they're too short to be tv adverts.

The ads are way too low-class for Pixar. When I first saw the ads, I double-checked the URL to see if this was a prank or something... but it was the Apple site. No. Definetely not by the real Pixar people.

Still, I love the dancing iMac, and the superdrive one looked like a boy who just entered puberty and was checking out his... whoops!

WHAT were they THINKING?

Itīs so ultra sweet that I thought my teeth took severe damage. The sound! The look! This is not Apple, the company with style and simplicity.
I really hope they wonīt broadcast these...

If Apple believe 6 year olds have 1800 $ to spend, fine with me.
Although the long video with the Rap Song and the white Apple Style seemed ill placed too.

Me thinketh me hath to create a REAL iMac Ad :D :D :D
Look out for it in 2 weeks or so :D
Because the new iMac rocks!!

If you go to apples website under quicktime, you will see these are not ads, but short films by pixar.

Let's not forget here that iMac is a CONSUMER desktop. Cute factor definitely counts in that arena.

I think it's cool for Pixar to be putting up some fun clips of the little guy.

Do you thing that R2D2 was the hands down favorite droid by accident? Naw! R2 was a great character exactly because there was inherent suspension of disbelief in a rolling garbage can having a cheeky, smartmouthed, play-with-your-toes personality. There's a lot to be said for a student-aimed product haveing enough personality to warrant a Saturday morning cartoon.

C'mon.......can't you just see it? A cute little iMac trying to have a spirited game of table-tennis with a dull gray tower? He serves....it bounces off the side of the Wintel and rolls back under the net. The iMac sighs, shakes it's head, serves again.....dashing off to the left for the volley. But to no avail, Wintel boxes just aren't any fun.

As totally off topic as these would be as adds, that's their power. The iMac as R2D2. I could see a whole series of these: "Ad-ventures of iMac and Putty". How about one where they're playing "cowboys and Indians" and the Wintel has a system meltdown, leaving the poor confused iMac running around trying to fix it's epeleptic playmate? (Evil Grin):D

Don't be too serious here guys, it's not an artificial Heart for gods' sakes it's an iMac.

tell me about it... i'm at work (sssh!) and played the movies without sound... i'd imagine that the connotations i got from that are not what apple intended... i'm sure it's much more wholesome with sound :)

STOP CHECKING.

Pull up a lawn chair, a beer and a BBQ and wait by the front door for a few days.

:p

BBQ out for my G5 MP, and I have had several burgers already. Have been stocking the freezer just in case of a long seige.

Not to be picky, but I don't believe the iMac can cock its "head" like that. It goes up and down & will swivel about the base, but the head doesn't turn towards portrait mode does it?

Something EVERYONE seems to have missed... These are not television ads. They were badly placed as the URL does indeed have "ads" as part of the address but these are not listed under the Apple commercials page and the link that leads to them. The iMac hardware page calls them short films, not ads. I believe they were done for entertainment and for the mac faithful, not specifically to be broadcast as an advertisement to sell the iMac.

You won't be seeing these anywhere except on the web.

But it completes the "characterization". A little artistic liscence. These ARE Pixar shorts BTW---NOT Apple Ads.

Feb 12, 2002, 01:25 PM
pretty cool. i was getting sick of those apple ads with the "real life" situations. you know, like with the family taking baby pictures, and the one with that loser in the airplane taking up all the space with his digital camera and laptop.

They are shorts created by Pixar.

These could be used as short advertising clips in movie theaters befor a film begins.. Could showcase these with a pixar made film... Would influence the family group and inspire the little ones.. Gee Daddy that is really neat can I have one?"....:p I must say you have a very captive audience in the theater and would tie in with Pixar's style. So, what do you think???....

The new iMac ads are able to penetrate the everyday barrage of commercials. There's something unique about a COMPUTER dancing like that. Whether all of us hard core fanatics like them or not - they will get attention they will stand out everyone will remember they saw them.

The possibility of more Adventures with iLuxor is also appealing. I think we've just seen the tip of the ice berg. (Especially liked the ping-pong idea!!!!)

Cheers Everyone!

As so many of you have pointed out, these are NOT ads.

If they were to be ads, there would be apple logo in the end, and the iThing would be hopping on a white backdrop.

...I did like the one with iBoy caught playing with his superdrive.

note the spelling. ads is short for adverts. it is spelt 'ads' not 'adds'.

They are actually not streaming movies. Try right-clicking them and saving them, then playing them.

Although by now you've probably looked at them on your Mac at home.

If you still haven't seen them (and still can't), I will post them.

I'm glad apple retracted the new iMac "ads" they weren't really ads, they were just cute little short vids made by Pixar. They weren't even upto Pixar standards. Sure they were cute and all but come on Pixar, that was pathetic.

As seen by the already enormous response to the new iMac in sales, I hardly think Apple even needs to advertise. Nevertheless, if they do, I think they will go with something a bit closer to their normal stuff. BTW, I really liked the Pixar shorts.
