I am glad to hear the Civ 4 is finally going to be released for Mac. I for one, am growing weary of playing it on PeeCee and having it crash (***curses at Windows***). :)

any word on whether the game is as good as Civ or Civ 2? because personally I hated Civ 3, despite my intense addiction to both the previous editions (which I still play regularly via Virtual PC)

Probably meant that the Mac native version of Civilizations IV has gone 'gold'. Having gone gold means the developers have finished compiling the source code onto a master disc. The master disc will then be sent to the factory to be mass produced and this typically takes about one to two weeks. Then the discs are shipped to the distributors and retailer outlets.

Your computer will run this game. Don't worry. Those are just very simplified requirements to keep people with iBook G4's and old iMac G4's from complaining about performance.

You don't RC. ;) What Aspyr actually said is that they may start looking at making games Intel-only on a case-by-case basis, depending on the system requirements. i.e., if the game would only run well on high-end G5s, then they might not make the effort to do the PPC conversion if the market for it's too small. On the other hand, that pretty much describes their last few games anyway, so I'd say the Mac game market is too small for them to cut out any sales at this point.

As far as I'm concerned, they could have just retained the Civ II graphics and updated the game engine and I'd be happy. I couldn't care less about the graphics of this game, it's the gameplay that counts.

i wonder how much of the graphics-heavy animation and stuff you'll be able to turn off.
my brother got this for pc a few months back and i didn't get into it the same way i'd gotten into civ 3... maybe just bad timing. some of the new complexities made me hide in the corner as they frazzled my small mind.

nordesmic- i would guess you'll be able to run it ok, especially if you bump down some graphical settings. the dual will probably not help you a ton, unless they've utilized multithreading... which, while possible, woudln't help a ton with the graphics being heavy. that said, i still think it'll be fine

The official Amazon.com release date is still June 30, although Amazon release dates are generally meaningless. More specific information is sometimes available on your order. My Amazon order had an expected ship date of the 26th, with an expected delivery date of June 28, but the 26th came and went without a shipment. I'll know when the packages are in when Amazon moves my order to the no changes allowed, shipping soon status.
Since the Aspyr site links to Amazon.com, you've got to figure that they will get the first batch. Apple.com lists a 3 to 5 business day shipping time for new orders.

DIt's US$80 or so a year, and work paid for my first year of it. With it, anything sold directly by Amazon ships two-day for free or US$3.99 for overnight (per item). Anything. Sent a vacuum cleaner to my brother, overnight, for $4. Got a snow blower sent here, overnight, for $4. Order diapers, food items, etc. to be delivered two-day for free. Need razors? They're here in two days. Etc.
If things are cheaper and/or not immediately needed and are available through Amazon directly (as I said, this doesn't apply to other vendors who display on Amazon but ship from themselves), I buy them that way.
Fantastic service.

My iMac G5 2.1 ghz is a bit sluggish with Civ IV and it fits within the recommended specifications. I have a feeling that the Intel Macs are going to run this game a lot better than PPC Macs.
As for the game itself, not as addictive as past Civs. This is a game where the action is rather slow and a patient approach is rewarded. You don't want to build too fast because the barbarians are very tough this time. It's actually more interesting to play a culture-based game this time than to conquer.
I'm starting to warm up to the game, it was a bit off-putting at first. I still can't believe that my iMac is choking a bit ... not even going to try to install it only my PowerBook G4.

Believe me, I'm tempted to go BACK to Civ 3 after playing Civ 4 for about four days. Great game, but it's just painfully slow on PPC Macs. I might just put it aside until I can afford a MBP.
I tok your advice, and ordered Civ 3 as well (the only Civ 3 I have is for PC), from MacGold.
Anyway, this morning I get a package delivered from Mac Gold - and lo and behold, they've sent me Civ 4 by mistake!
So now I've got to cancel my Amazon order for Civ 4, and maybe I'll reorder Civ 3 if Civ 4 is unplayable. Here's hoping it isn't unplayable.
