I've spun up opened HDs.

Usually they will go a bit then shut down.

You can do this a few times and then they stop altogether.

Kind of fun to watch the arm move.

I find it hard to believe that Hard Drives spin faster than a planes propat idle. The can spin faster than AirPlane props go.

I'll take an open one just to see how a hard disk looks opened up and running...pretty cool. I sent you a PM.
On a side note, what is the reason that hard drives will not run once opened? Dust contamination?

When you take a HD apart, you will see that the head looks like it is touching the media (disc). But in reality, there is actually a space -- a very small space -- between the head and disc.

The HD is sealed at the manufacturer in a vacuum, or close to it.

When the mechanism is exposed to air, the air particles interfere with normal operation.

In the old days on mainframe computers the heads actually flew very close to the discs. A particle of smoke from a cigarette could cause a crash when it got between the head and disc. Seen the result of a catastrophic head crash. It wasn't pretty.
