IIRC, this was due to faulty batteries. I also believe the whine in the MBP is related to electricity as well. :(

Regardless, it's a good reason not to keep laptops on cloth. ;) They tend to get ubstructed (the vents), and overheat. With a bad battery or random electrical shortcircuit, kabloom. It burned for so long cuz it was plastic, and some people tend to forget that plastic is flammable.
