DS lite battery question

I just got my DS Lite a few weeks ago, and I had a possibly dumb question about the battery.

On the main screen, there is a battery indicator in the upper right hand corner. Does this ever 'decrease' (like on an iPod, for example), or does it just go from full green to red?

There have been times when I would have really liked to have known how much battery power I had left, however, I have only ever seen the full green battery indicator, and the flashing red light while I have been playing a game.

Is there any way to tell how much power I have left besides speculating based on the screen brightness I've set it on? Thanks.

i was wondering that too. I had full battery when playing mario kart. A moment later I had the red LED. I test it by turning it off and on again and it tells me I have full battery. Only when it had been glowing red for a while did it change its battery status. As far as I can tell those are the only two variations.
