I used to think only a few people's PS2s broke, but apparently there is a much larger problem. My PS2 only works occasionally, and even when it does work, it stops reading the disk after about 30 minutes. Anyone out there who still has a working PS2, or did they all have some flaw :D

When they first came out, seems like only 1 in 3 worked off the shelf...

My PS2 is a launch console. I had problems with the laser a couple years after I bought. So I cracked it open, blew it out with a can of air, and it's still going strong.

I've dropped mine a couple times from a shelf, tripped on it, and have kept it on for days at a time (Accident). It works perfectly.
Though, its always been my secondary system, and I use it mainly as a DVD player now. [GC>PS2,XBOX]

i got my ps2 one week after it came out...still works perfectly. same old network adapter, memory card. ive gone through probably 10 controllers lol. Playing the whole SOCOM series is stressful. Been through 5 or so headsets. I use my leaf blower once a month to blow the dust out.

Got mine for Christmas in 2001. I'm still using the same console, controller, and memory card. I haven't had a hardware issue with my PS2 yet. I did have one problem where my GTA3 disc had a tiny scratch that caused the game to lock up. A quick run through the Disc Doctor solved that problem and everything is great. I soft modded my PS2 so now I can play a SNES, Genesis, and Master System roms along with Divx movies. No mod chip required, just enough room on a memory card to save the programs and load everything else off a CD. So almost 5 years of use including 2.5 years of hacking and still going strong.
Oh, completely off topic: Don't let salesmen at places like GameStop tell you old PS2s won't play newer games. That is a load of bull.

Mine still works fine, though the disk tray got jammed after a six-inch drop to carpet and I nearly broke the thing trying to get it out. It's fragile.

I've had mine since the only good game was SSX (yes the first version). It still works. I've dismantled it twice to clean it out which helps keep it going.
Since I got my 360 it's not been turned on though...

Just to redress the good balance and paint a more acurate picture..
Err I'm on my fourth.
My launch PS2 laser died. My replacement is alive, but refuses to work on 95% of discs put in. :(
My Slim Ps2 replaced this and it just packed in two weeks after purchase.
Final Replacement Slim PS2 still alive.....
All ps2's were kept in a very clean environment, all discs are without scratches as I really look after them, so why so many laser troubles??
Xbox & Gamecube never had any problem with....

I bought one just before the Cube launch. infact just 3 days before. Everything was fine until day 3 where it just wouldn't boot up anymore. Luckily I was heading into town anyways. Money back, bought Cube. Year or 2 passes, get an Xbox. never a problem with either.

I have a launch console. I had some problems with the laser a little while ago so I broke it open and cleaned the laser with rubbing alcohol and a Qtip, it works great since then!

My launch PS2 broke about 2 years after I got it. 3 of my friends also have launch PS2s that have broken in around the same time. I have opened it up to clean the lens, and it helped for a few weeks, but eventually the laser just got weak, and it stopped working all together. Anyone that took apart a launch model can see how poorly designed internally they are.

I got a launch PS2, and it broke. Then, unlike many others I was quickly given a working PS2, which my sister proceeded to break. Because of all the problems, they just assumed it was their fault, and replaced it with another faulty console. Soon after they gave me a new one which worked, and I was left with all the controllers, so it wasn't all bad.

Off topic: My XBOX worked. I'm a bit surprised that HD life span is avg. 5 years and it's been 5 years! I hope the DVD player will work if the HD broke. Anyone knows??

I got my PS2 the opening day and within 2 weeks had to send it to Sony for laser repairs.
Since that time I've had troubles with the laser reading the discs that I put in it (Disc Read Errors).
However, I've fixed it three times by following this excellent how to on ArsTechnica:
http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars
This also worked on a friend's who was having the same issues. So if you have Disc Read Errors, follow the how-to and you'll be set.

I've yet to find someone locally who isn't on their 2nd PS2. Another problem that dogged my girlfriends PS2 was a dodgy controller port. at first they thought it was the controller though.
seems like the PS2 was quite a shoddy made system. Does this worry people to the PS3 quality, after all you will be spending £450 on it.

Mine broke within a year. Cost me $40 to get it fixed.
No problems after that.

I've had mine since launch and it runs like a champion to this day. My friend bought his around the same time, but he hand to get his replaced after a month of use. I personally think I got lucky.

Im on my second PS2. First one died right after the extended warranty expired. It decided it didn't want to play any disks. My slim PS2 is working well, but is starting to get a little finicky.

Had mine since two weeks after launch and it has problems with the laser because the games don't auto start anymore when you put them in before you boot the PS2. Also the CD version of the PS2 gamers rarely work. Other than that it's still working.

Actually, discoloured MacBooks are quite rare, and PS2 problems are extremely common.

I bought mine on the launch day at Wal Mart ... Maybe 6 months later, the discs read error came in and I sent my PS2 for a repair, cost free :P. Then, a year later, the power supply from my repaired PS2 broked down , so I sent the PS" to Sony. Cost : 80 $ . 2 months ago, the repaired-powersupply-repaired PS2 broked again .. Bought a Slim PS2 and it's rocking on :). Except for the fact that there is no more i.Link port on it...

mine is a launch console as well. waited hours through the night to get it. had it installed in my 95 tahoe and would take it into the house as well. After awhile it stopped reading discs, i took it apart blew air in it and swabbed the laser. Works like a charm ever since.

I got the PS2 in the first year it was released. Never had a problem with it with exception of a few dual layer DVD's which crash or don't view properly. Otherwise has worked fine.
The PS1 however. I went through 3 or 4 of those, all with laser problems. Worst quality control ever.

PS2 still works fine. Though I can't say that about hte games, for we did not take care of the disks. left them out of hte cases often and they got all scuffed up. Regardless, hte only issues was dust on the lense, but that was easliy fixed. :)

I've got 2 slim PSTwos. One black US and one white Japanese. I've had them both for about 2 years. No problems. I got a used Dreamcast and N64 a few months later. Got a new GameCube a year later. I've had a rev. B Sega Saturn that I bought new a decade ago.
I have Japanese and US games for all of them except the N64. I prefer nonhacking solutions for playing imported games. Just in case the console breaks I can go out and buy a new one and still use the boot disc or ram/memory cart in the case of the Saturn. Surprisingly none of my consoles have ever broke.
I own 2 PSTwos because I never liked the boot disc solutions of modifying or forcing the door open. I also have as many Japanese region 2 DVDs as I do US region 1s. I have a region free dvd player as well.
I've never had any problems with the PSTwos or GameCube. haven't had any with the N64 either. Although I've never replaced the dead battery in the memory card. I only have racing games for the N64 anyways.
I don't think my Dreamcast has any problems. I say that because I think my Virtua Fighter 3tb disc is defective. It looks like video distortion. The game plays fine the picture just gets dimmer or warps and cuts out every now and then. All the other games play fine.
The Saturn is old, but still works. The internal memory lasts 5 years before I need to change the battery. I think my memory cartridge is dead though. I only ever used it to save Dragon Force games. The ST-Key (ram cart/import solution) is always in the memory slot anyways.
I had consider getting an xbox just to play some fighting games that weren't released in the US for the PS2 in english. I actually have Guilty Gear XX #Reload and Samurai Showdown V for the Xbox, but the 360 after thought approach to backwards compatability leaves little hope or desire to buy the system.

Mine was purchased in 2003 and it's worked perfectly. I thought the chunk of the problems were with the first release of the system.
