Can anyone explain to me how the rating system works? Apparently, you need a certain rarting to get an avatar, but what rating is that?

ahhhh *shoots kitten*
Ratings are for threads.
To get an avatar you need 500 posts, and achieve a different user title

Why are some people seemingly incapable of reading the FAQ? Or does the OP's username give a clue here?

I had the same question not long ago. The problem is that the info is in the wrong location. There's a MacRumors FAQ as well as a MacRumors Forum FAQ. The pertinent info should be in the Forum FAQ but it's not.

Of all the names in all the world...Mind you, I only picked mine because it was my eBay user name at the time and hence something I could remember!!

There's a MacRumors FAQ covering the entire site including the forums and a separate Forum Rules (not an FAQ) that covers rules of behavior and etiquette in the forums. The FAQ is the logical place for things like avatars...at least that's what's logical to me

That's okay...the site admins have tried to make the 500-post requirement more obvious in an effort to stem the flood of threads we see on this, so there's now a statement on the "Edit Avatar" page covering this.
I guess part of the problem that still remains is that some people don't know what an "avatar" (or at least don't know to call what they're thinking of an "avatar") is and thus never get as far as that page before posting a thread to ask about it.

I don't understand why you need a certain number of posts to get an avatar.. why don't they just give you one as soon as you join?

Because it's a way to recognize those who have made a substantial contribution to the community here...
