View Full Version : Feeler/FS/FT: 1st Generation iPod!

I bought a first generation iPod from someone who couldn't use it anymore since they didnt have a mac. All he told me was that it hasn't been charged in years..so I bought it since I figured it would work.
When I got it, I became super psyched because it is a beauty! Aesthetically pleasing, all of the physical parts in tack and working, very smooth and very awesome spinning scroll wheel, great hold switch, headphone jack in tack, and just casual scratching from use.
Well...I plugged it in via firewire and the apple logo loaded fine! But then...:( I got the folder with the exclamation point image.
So I proceeded to press the center button again and the apple logo appears again! But then....:( it shows a magnifing glass searching around a cd, and then ultimately changing to the sad iPod face with the exclamation point. If I turn it off and turn it on again, it will do the same thing showing those symbols.
Maybe this can be fixed easily or maybe not. I tried the steps on apple's site for attempting to fix this (i.e. put in disk mode, restore, etc.) but I couldnt put it in disk mode and my computer isnt recognizing it. Right now I have it plugged into an electrical outlet...charging I guess...perhaps this may help??
Is anyone interested in buying this that may know how to fix it or use it...perhaps a trade of some sort, or simply a straight out purchase.
It truely is awesome, I just wish I knew how to fix it without putting more money into it. A non working iPod is useless to me although it would make a nice addition to my collection. But as for now money is important to me...or working apple merch:)

No thanks, I would like keep it for that price...I don't really want to lose my shirt on it. Thanks though.

I'll give you $35 shipped here. Afterall it is a non working ipod with a limited chance (or knowledge) of it being repairable, as well as it coming as is w/ no headphones cables or anything. That is a lot for it. Let me know mayne.

Im sorry, I can't go that low...no offense, but for that price it's worth more to keep it. Thanks for the offer though, I do appreciate it.
I think my suggestion or around that would be quite reasonable.

No offence to you or your iPod, but you're not going to get 60 bucks for a used, broken, not to mention the first ever made iPod.
Trust me, even on ebay the 3rd generations go for 60-100, the 2nd gen go for 30-40, and the 1st gens go for anywhere from 1-20.
I would say 30 dollars for a broken 1st gen would be an awesome opporitunity for you.
Not meaning to crap on anyone's thread, but just stating the facts.
If you want that much, and it's worth more to you, then keep it.

I agree, but what is a broken 1st generation ipod worth to you? Anyway i would say $30 would be more than fair!

I'd take that 35 dollar offer up.
The problem is the hard disk, and the hard disks are the most expensive part to replace in an iPod.

$35 for a broken 1G iPod is probably the best you'll be able to get. Let's be reasonable here: it's broken, it probably needs a new battery and hard drive, and none of the original accessories are included. It's not worth hardly anything, IMO. I'd jump on the $35 offer.

the OP for some reason doesn't seem to want to sell for a low price. perhaps he figures the 1st gen iPod is worth more than a few tens of dollars because it is the 1st gen and, therefore, special.
but he is wrong. if he wants to hold onto it, let him.

To be sure, I thought 1G iPods would've been worth a lot (I thought the initial 25 dollar offer was lowballing for sure!!!)
But it wasn't. I did a quick search on eBay, and these guys are right - that 35 dollar offer is terrific.
For 36 dollars, for example, you could get a working 1G iPod with a new battery:

Corey...sorry...iPod Mechanic;
There is no way that you can get a 1G ipod on ebay for $1 or even 20$. That is nonsense. I know, I have been watching many of them and wanting to purchase one myself until I got this one.

Check back tomorrow...gaurenteed that it will be at least ...at least 60% higher that that.

That is what I said I would do. I didn't mean to get everyone upset, this is just a Feeler. If someone had came up with a reasonable offer or trade to satisfy me, I would have gone with it. Be calm everyone. Please.

Dont get me wrong though, the 1G is nice. :)
If I had the extra cash I'd buy it off of you, but I dont. Plus then I'm looking for one that can sync with USB as well as FW, so I can also use it as a removable HDD.

Youre not getting $65 for it though. I hate to break it to you but that's just not going to happening.

I agree, I like the simple-ness of the 1st gen. Mine is still working perfectly since I got it, when it first came out!

I think you did get a reasonable offer.
edit: Just took a closer look. Lots of scratches. All the more reason what you're asking is unreasonable.

Unbelievable
Maybe 65$ is a bit high...hence I posted a feeler. At this point in time any offer less then 50$ is worth more for me to keep it. Just in my opinion. I thank you for all of the valuable comments though.
