John Carmack of id software updated his plan (http://www.webdog.org/plans/1/) this past week with an detailed look into the current state of NVidia's and ATI's video drivers and cards... see the plan for the details, but in the end:
I can set up scenes and parameters where either card can win, but I think that current Nvidia cards are still a somewhat safer bet for consistent performance and quality.
