View Full Version : Feeler: 3Ghz Mac Pro...that's right, a 3Ghz Mac Pro

Well, I'm a bit of an idiot. Through means that I don't want to discuss, I ordered two Mac Pros, and...well...I only need one. I haven't received either yet, but let's say that when Apple says "Preparing for Shipment", they mean it and the order can't be cancelled. I'll find out for sure tomorrow if my request to break protocol went through...so for now this is a feeler. The unlucky Mac Pro that gets to leave my clutches only moments after arriving in them?

3.00 GHz Quad Xeon
1GB 667 DDR2 FB DIMM ECC-2x512
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB
250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s drive
16x SuperDrive DL
Bluetooth 2.0+EDR
Apple Keyboard & Mighty Mouse

I'd take pics, but seeing as the machine is probably being made at the moment, it's likely that's not possible. What am I looking for for this unopened, untouched, UNMANUFACTURED (as of this writing) machine???

$3100 Shipped, Retails for $3328+tax

PM me or email me at moviecutter (at) mac (dotnospam) com.

EDIT: Price drop to $3100

Think the credit card company has two words for that, the second of which is 'off' :p

Shame on you all for suggesting to destroy a brand new mac pro. :p

I say build a clear lexan case for the Mac Pro you wont use and keep it fresh and new for eternity. Heck, it will be a great conversation piece.

"whats this?"

"oh, its the mac pro i bought just for its daring design and stunning power"

"huh?"

".... I bought two of them."

"oh."

"sell it on eBay."

I bet you could get more than its worth on fleabay. You should at least fire it up once and xgrid it for some rendering powah. Muhahahahaaaaa....

That would be actually a very good idea but you need to be RICH to just leave $3500US product unopened. When I mean rich, I mean buying 10 MacPros is like me trying to afford 2GB ram on my MBP.

I could combine the two and build a mini renderfarm, but I don't need two machines, nor can I just let the temptation to make the 2nd Mac Pro a SuperUberMediaServer and plug it into my TV, so this needs to go STAT!

When the courier comes, hide under the bed, so they'll end up taking it back to the depot. If you never come to collect it, will they return it to Apple after a few weeks?

It seems a bit unfair if they do force you to take delivery of two computers due to a simple mistake.

Pressure's post is interesting - perhaps you could sell it to someone abroad (though shipping might be expensive).

I feel bad for you, honestly, I hope someone does come along and purchase it. I mean that's an awesomely great computer. I'd try to get on the phone with Apple and demand that they take the one back and refund your money, explain what happened and they may fix it. If they don't ask to speak with a manager and explain your situation to them.

imnotatfault
Aug 27, 2006, 08:07 AM
Seriously, this is kind of getting out of hand.
Whoever it is at Apple that is telling you nothing can be done clearly doesn't know what they're talking about. Can't get what you want out of a tech support rep, then move up to their supervisor, and so on and so forth.

Seriously, like someone above said, you dropped too much money for them to not help you out. And simply waiting for someone to maybe possibly fix this is not an option. Companies have infinite power within their own walls, and you cannot tell me that this "Built-to-order" machine can't have a 250GB HD swapped for Joe Blow's probably exact equal 500GB model?!?! Give me a break.

It's also funny how fast companies jump on your side when you threaten to involve your credit card company (customer is always on the right, don't forget that) or the Better Business Bureau, not only that, but they will lose you as a customer, and they will no longer receive your $3000+ purchases ever again. Trust me.

MovieCutter
Aug 27, 2006, 11:09 AM
Is that the best price?

Yeah, that's the best price, considering it's sealed and new and you're automatically getting $200+ off. As for sending it back to Apple, I have no problem being out a couple hundred, I made more off my last project than I expected anyway and it basically paid off the MP I kept. So I'm just looking to give someone from MR a good deal at this point.

 Why, because he's following Apple's rules that he already knows and isn't trying to get Apple to bend them just because HE made a mistake?

He could pissy-moan to Apple and beg them to take it back, or he could sell it elsewhere and be done with it that way. He can obviously afford to be out the cash for a little, so it's not hurting him much.

IMO, your comment is completely 1) ridiculous, and 2) rude.

Retail = Customer Service, plain and simple.
I, for the life of me, cannot fathom how someone can just shrug their shoulders and just resign himself to a $3000+ purchase he made in err.

Mistakes are made and don't think that Apple can't do anything for them.

Depending on how much you pay in taxes every year, donating it to a nonprofit might also work out for you - they'd have to give you a receipt for the donation that's fully tax deductible (and for full value, if you want) that you can use against 2006 taxes. Just a thought, especially if you can wait till the end of the year to recapture the money you spent on it.

Good luck, sounds like a beautiful system.

I'm from the UK, and let me just say, if you were offering me this at the right time, I'd be seriously tempted.

$3100 is £1641.26 (plus a bit for conversion + shipping)

In the UK Apple store, the same machine is

£2,259.01 = $4,266.23

I think you should state if you are willing to ship international, and how much for. You have a high chance of finding an international buyer.

To legally post it here to me in the UK, it seems from the UK customs website I only have to pay the standard VAT tax of 17.5%, which makes your price :

$3100 x 1.175 = $3,642.50 = £1,929.01

Hmm maybe not so much of a bargain, but that's if you declared the full price :)
