View Full Version : Favorite Old School Games?

I'm talking real old school- like 1989 and before.

My favorites were Seven Cities of Gold, OrbQuest (anyone else get their hands on that one?), NFL Challenge, Crystal Raider, Arkanoid, MicroLeague Baseball 2, Sim City, Hardball!, Transylvania, Dungeon of Doom, Scarab of RA. Man, those were some good times!

Here's to Worldbuilder!

I didn't have a Mac until the 90s - and that was my first computer at home. Occassionaly I'd play some games, but not many - I seem to remember Prince of Persia as being one I enjoyed. No idea when that came out though.

But there really were some great games way back when, simpler at times, but no less fun.

two words, Strategic Conquest! :) That was one of the reasons that I bought a Mac. I remembered playing it with a friend on his Mac. I don't know why that little game gets me so excited.....

Did anyone ever play bolo over a network? It was pretty fun for a free game many years ago. My favorite classic game is not a mac game it is galaga although centipede is a close second.

I've been a computer gamer since the Sinclair ZX81 came out - a black & white 1K computer with a membrane keyboard and 16K ram pack!

We used to drool over the ZX Spectrum when that baby came out - still not as powerful as a Commodore 64, but beautiful just the same.

But I was the envy of my class in 1983 when I got an Apple ][e - with great games such as:

Summer Games 1 & 2
Winter Games
Lode Runner
Conan
Bruce Lee
Flight Simulator
Skyfox
Transylvania
Dragon's Eye
Wizardry
Zork
Jason and the Golden Fleece
Gruds In Space
Ghostbusters
Taipan
(yes, I know...) Lemonade Stand
Tapper
Phoenix

Then I upgraded to the Mac 512KE in 1985, and kissed blocky graphics goodbye - with titles like:

Flight Simulator (THE definitive version)
Deja Vu 1 & 2
Shadowgate
Uninvited
Apache Strike
MacGolf
Sub Battle Simulator
Vette!
Star Wars
Falcon

After that, I got a Mac LCII in 1992. Colour came along - and gaming got a lot better...

Falcon AT
Hornet V1.0
Victory At Sea
Flying Nightmares
Marathon 1 & 2
Links Golf
A-10 Attack!

Now, I have my G4 Cube. Bought in 2001, it SERIOUSLY kicks butt - especially compared to the games of yesteryear. The games you can't get me off now are:

Medal of Honor
Soldier of Fortune
MacMame
X-Plane V6.51
Alien Vs. Predator
Warcraft III
F/A-18 Hornet Korea 1.2

- most of these games I play online. However, for that true "retro" experience, I've downloaded a few emulators to recapture my youth. So I can now mimic the:

ZX81
ZX Spectrum
Commodore 64/128
Commodore Amiga
Atari ST
Playstation
Apple ][GS/][e
128K Mac
- along with MacMame, mentioned earlier...

Many of the OLDEST programs are freely downloadable (as long as you don't intend selling them), so you can easily take a trip down memory lane - especially if you're my age, where you can dig that old 1980's CD out of your collection and play along to The Knack's "My Sharona"...

What a sad bastard...

I was on a //c until 1989, so all my classics are on that platform.

Really, anything from Electronic Arts were where it was at. PMH PEGASUS, BARDS TALE AND SEVEN CITIES OF GOLD killed many a teenage day. I was never any good at WIZARDRY, but I spent a lot of time on it. I also enjoyed REACH FOR THE STARS by SSG.

Snake Byte - when I first played the PC version on qbasic, I was like, "Arrow keys? Why would I use the arrow keys?"

Bolo - never played it networked, didn't even know it was possible, but still a cool game.

Lemonade Stand - of course.

There was one, La Cucaracha? maybe? Anyways, it was like a giant pacman board, with a zoom window that followed you around. Also a sweet game.

5. winter games & california games (C-64)

those are the only games I still play from time to time... (God bless the emulator scene...)

Any of the Infocom text adventure games
Star Raiders
Choplifter
Centipede
Galaxian
Burger Time
Tapper

It would be fun to write those kind of games again. Does anyone want to play something at 320x200 in 16 colours? :D It's gotten so complicated lately. Btw, I found another Mac game programming book recently: Mac Game Programming, ISBN 1-931841-18-7.

Choplifter, Prince of Persia and Strategic Conquest were GREAT games, but you guys are missing a few gems.... OIDs and Land of Ys come immediately to mind.

But by far the greatest game ever created was "Wings of Fury." Who's with me?

-Nate

PS- who remembers an action/strategy game that gave you third person control of a helicopter. The point of the game was to get an allied van past the enemies base. 3 bombs destroyed a tank, if I remember correctly.

there's a reason i put this first: it is my favorite game ever. i have it for my computer, calculator and game boy. i also have a small version i carry around with me as well as playing it in the arcade. the best versions of this game are the original ones before it started getting away from 'original intent'. my high score on the game boy is 264439. the companies are:

Spectrum Holobyte
Atari
Nintendo

there was an original version for the famicomm that i never played.

what happened to the good ol' days?

dark castle - was so ahead of its time
shadowgate - we played hours and hours without getting any further...and still loved it
scarab of RA - remember the horror when the guardian suddenly appeared behind you...
crystal quest - anyone else with 3+ million points?
pt109 - the best naval warfare sim ever. period.
falcon - wow, digitized speech and stuff
vette - i bought a LCII a few years ago just to be able to play that game again
shufflepuck - just great
brickles
stunt copter
spacestation pheta
billard
leisure suit larry
enigma
memory
macbugs - "a game for the good of all mackind"
stratego
grand prix - probably the first and last game for the mac by accolade...cool sound, too

*passing out in nostalgia*

the games i remember most, are;

Texas Instruments TI99-4A;

Car Wars (i think)

C-64;
Heavy Metal Paradroid
Last Ninja 1 & 2
International Karate +

Commodore Amiga;

oh man you guys have to help me!!!!

i just remembered a game i used to play ages and ages ago...and i think it was even on a mac...a really old apple II or something, i'm not exactly sure. let me describe it to you. i'm sorry if i'm vague cause i barely remember...this was like when i was 8 or 9 probably

the levels are maze like, and you have to get to something or through them i'm not sure. and there are these bugs or worms that are bad guys...if i remember the look like 4 or 5 round beads attached to eachother...and you have these things, i think there called thumpers that you can lay down and they attract the worms so you can get by them. (mmm kinda sounds like dune) but anyway this is a very old game with very poor graphics...like 2 colors maybe...no maybe a few different colors...but not many. If you could tell me what yo think this game might be called it owuld be greatly appreciated.

man theres a flood of memories coming back to me now...i remember this game on the same computer where you would design your own car and put it through a test run and it would calculate how good it did. and also the same for paper airplanes. ha those old games were so much fun.

Armor Alley - (if not then one of the) Greatest. Game. Ever. 2D side-scrolling RTS. Sure it's a year after the time frame, but still... and the best part is, the 'latest' update to it lets it run in 256 colors, which means it'll run in classic (on an iBook 800MHz)!

You're right about that.

I used to play Tempest a lot, but it was expensive with all the quarters. Then, I typed in a game called LiveWire! from an Atari computer magazine and it worked so well, I saved a lot of quarters. There was also Tempest 2000 on the Atari Jaguar, which was great.

Lots of great games have already been mentioned. Just thought I would add that I spent a lot of time working through the early Ultima series, first on an Apple ][+ and then on a Mac SE.

And Spaceward Ho! should get a mention for Mac games even if it did come a bit later. Man, I loved that game. We used to play at the University when I was doing sysadmin stuff in the Mac labs.

Didn't work in 9. I did, however, find a copy of it on an SE/30 that I didn't know worked. The music played there, and on a PB 540c with 7.5.5. So the question is: what changed between 7.5.5 and 9 that would prevent it from playing sound. THere was one thing in the Tetris from the SE/30 though, that might have been what let it play sound: another file in the folder called "Tetris da" no idea what it is, but the icon is similar to a font suitcase.

Still looking into the sound issue. I'm wondering at this point if the sound files had 0x0 assembly code in them. That would explain why it doesn't play on my iBook; it might not even play on any PPC.

If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, there have been many versions of this game for many different platforms. Two current versions that run on OS X are Pocket Tanks (http://www.ct*******.com/ptanks.htm) and Dome Wars (http://www.ns-software.com/DomeWars/). Both are shareware titles, I think, and pretty well done. Very addicting!

That's actually the only reason I'm resurrecting my Risc PC. Course, I'm going to have to cripple it -- it'll be unplayable at native *gasp* 33MHz.

Nice bit of thread necromancy. For pre-1989, I'll vote Defender, Millipede, Air-sea battle and Pitfall! for the 2600. For my Amstrad, uh, what I play on that... *thinks* Ghostbusters, and a couple of old Codemasters titles. The original Street fighter was cool.

I just wish you could run Lemmings in classic without resetting your colors (why hasn't apple fixed this?). You really shouldn't have to reset your system colors for an emulator.

For my IIc my favorites were Karateka, Leisure Suit Larry and The Bard's Tale. Utopia and Pitfall on the Intellivision. Can't forget Tradewars on the BBS.

The first version of John Madden Football was for the Apple II.

does anyone remember Arashi?

Yep, still have it. Too bad it won't run in classic on my G5. :( Works great on the B&W G3 though :D

A couple of people mentioned it, but Dark Castle was the ULTIMATE game. I would pay unreasonable amounts of money to play it on OSX. I think the site is www.deltatao.com where someone is working on an osx version.

How about MacTalker? Oh man. When we were kids we had a heck of a time with that! Not really a game, but it was awesome.

My parent's MacSE is still working and it has scrab or RA on it and Dark Castle and Beyond Dark Castle. Freak. So awesome. There is nothing out there now that matches those games for pure game play. Graphics, sure, but nothing close in game play.

I always had a soft spot for 'Sands of Fire'--anyone remember that gem?

'Uninvited' was also pretty nifty.

Is there a crystal quest version of OS X or os 9 for classic use...? I love that game, played it all the time on my LC.
I also remember playing this game, forgot the name, it took place in space and was like half dome and a ball... and u had to keep the ball in...
Also i remember in elementry school i remember learning how to type on "mario teaches typing" i wish they made "mario teaches spelling" ;)

I forgot 'Air Traffic Controller'. What a game.

I think there's an OS X version out there somewhere.

PS- who remembers an action/strategy game that gave you third person control of a helicopter. The point of the game was to get an allied van past the enemies base. 3 bombs destroyed a tank, if I remember correctly.

Armor Alley. Does anyone know where I can download the latest version?

Dark Castle was absolutely the best. I would pay someone a lot to get my copy of vMac to play it. Star'Roids was good, although I never got the drug reference (I was too young). Super Tetris (Spectrum Holobyte) was good. Warlords - was that too late?

http://mac.the-underdogs.org/index.php?show=alpha has tons of old games; http://mandragore.lautre.net/grenier/index.htm has even more, and although the site is in French, most of the games are in English ("Telecharger" means download).

Very cool games. If there are easy to use Mac OS X friendly versions available let me know. No, not Macmame. I need something really easy to use.
