Apple store sells Ford racing 2 and Total immersion Racing...
Maybe one of them would be good?
Hi.... sounds good...
was also looking at Grand Prix 2... thanks so much... now I have to decide which one! :(
Hi,
Am looking at the Total Immersion Racing, it says it is for system OS 10.1.3, my husband uses OS 10.4.7, will it work on his system?

Aspyr.com and macsoftgames.com are a good place to look. :)

If it were out (it's currently in Final Candidate form) I'd say grab him a game from Ambrosia called Redline, but alas, it's not out.
When is your husband's birthday? I can keep you informed as to it's progress (I'm a beta tester for it).

Maybe pick another gift now and get Colin McRae Rally for Christmas.
From http://www.macgamer.com/features/?id=2003:
Tell us a bit more about Colin McRae Rally 2005.
This is the fifth and latest incarnation of the series and, of course, the first one to appear on the Mac. Colin McRae Rally has always been noted for its true-to-life graphics and superb simulation of car handling, which has only improved as the series has progressed. The Feral tech team has had a long, pleasurable look at the PC version and were absolutely blown away by the detail of the graphics. Each vehicle features its own individual damage model and the tracks are all fully animated, so fences twist and fall over if you drive into them, while crashing into a tree will cause leaves to fall to the ground. When driving over sand or gravel, dynamic clouds of debris plume out from behind the the car; if you perform a series of sharp brakes or a power-slide, then the brake-discs glow red hot. At first we mistook the rain when viewed from the bonnet camera for full-motion video as it looks so realistic, however when the car accelerated it started creeping up and over the windscreen because of the inertia – as you can no doubt tell, there's a lot to get excited about in terms of visuals. But the real meat and bones of Colin McRae Rally '05 is the vast and varied gameplay. For example, the Career Challenge mode – a new introduction to the series – features over 20 different classes of rally events across a staggering 300+ tracks in 9 worldwide locations with 7 different classes of car to choose from, such as Super 2-wheel Drive and 4x4 Classics. And with the addition of online play offering head-to-head rallying for up to 8 players, Colin McRae Rally '05 will definitely raise the bar for racing on the Mac.

Those games in the Apple Store seem quite old. From the comments, it seems that the simulation is quite basic. I'm convinced McRae will be way better.
But I'm concerned about this requirement for McRae published in one shop about graphics card with 128MiB of VRAM. You would need a pretty new PowerBook, and no iBook.
I wouldn't play a racing game without a wheel and pedals. There're are some Logitech with force feedback which support Mac. There's one UK shop selling one in bundle with McRae.
