View Full Version : iTunes 7 Resources Hint At Apple Phone?

MacRumors

MacShrine reports that some resource files in iTunes 7 (http://www.macshrine.com/2006/09/13/ipod-phone-evidence-in-itunes-7/) are descriptive of features that are currently unavailable in other iTunes compatible mobile phones.

"Some of the games in your iTunes library were not copied to the mobile phone [name] because you are not authorized to play them on this computer" and "iTunes cannot sync photos to the mobile phone [name] because your iPhoto Library needs updating. Open iPhoto to update your iPhoto Library".

A similar situation occured when the June 28th iPod Updater was found to contain phone related strings (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/07/20060729213347.shtml).

I just recently became eligable for upgrade on my mobile phone, and seeing as how Apple keeps dropping hints left and right about their phone strategy and that its still coming... I think I'm gonna hold off for a while on the upgrade. I'm with Cingular and its safe to assume that the iPhone will be released for them given the working relationship between the companies.

Officially waiting for the iPhone... my RAZR works fine for now...

I will not believe what you are saying.

Agree with MattyMac, it would make sense for Apple to release an "iPhone" because they already have reached out to the average user through the iPod. If people saw an "iPhone", they would inevitably buy one for either its functionality, looks, or reputation. It would be a hit, and I see no reason for it to be unlikely.

There, I said it:p

Honestly, I DO care, but it's too tiring to think about. I'd like to forget about it until the speculated product comes out, if it does, which I think it will.

Then maybe I will buy it. I will try to stay with my crappy phone for 6 months until giving up on the iPhone. If it's not out within the next 6 months... yeah, it better be.

But watch my buy a new phone ONE DAY before the suprise release of the super-amazing iPhone. It's doomed to happen.

Just because there are phone related measages does not mean Apple will release a phone. Software takes so long and so much effort to write that the Apple engineers may just be covring the possibility that the executives might decide to want to support a third party phone. Perhaps they were told to "be ready to support a decision within 120 days" So they may have coded the infrastructure into iTunes to support some generic phone but are holding off on the last part until they are given the "go" sign.

Heck I just did something like this myself. I know that this new device I need to support wants it's data in XML format. So I'm putting some XML libraries in my code now and getting the build system to use the library but I'm holding off on doing anyhting more then "laying a foudation" until later

Why oh why do they always need to aim a bit too high immediately??!! At least I don't think it would need to work seamlessly with iTunes Store with movies and podcasts and games or be able to import GarageBand sessions over 3G networks and remotely boot your corporations main frame Xserve. It would be a good start to sell us a phone that simply works nice, is Apple, works like an Apple and is affordable. Everything else is a bonus. Either do it or don't.

Roughly Drafted speculates, very reasonably, that the delay with the iTV pertains to the delay in the finalization of the 802.11n spec (802.11g isn't fast enough to transmit digital content reliably). In other words, the unit probably works, but they don't want it to rely on proprietary wireless standards.

Likewise...

I do not believe that the iPhone will be released until there is a significant increase in the rollout of UTMS. It's the only standard that will make the iTMS worth using on the phone (other than EVDO, which is not on GSM phones.) Since GSM is the world-wide standard, even if there is a CDMA version of the iPhone, there will at least be a GSM version, if it's not also the only one.

So, *IF* there's going to be an iPhone, don't look for it before Christmas. In fact, I wouldn't look for any new iPods at all before Christmas, because it's after Labor Day and now's the time you put products to people for shopping.

I'm still waiting on that promised Merom MacBook/MBP upgrade!

I can't take it anymore. My Sprint contract is up and my Nokia 6225 is beat.

I had high hopes going into yesterday's media event, but now I have to accept the fact that the Apple phone is either never going to happen or its going to happen after I commit to another phone/contract.

The worst part is that I held out on buying a new laptop because I was sure that the Intel iBook replacement was going to have a widescreen and come in black.

TA DAH now I'm just waiting until I have enough saved up to get the specs I want.

It's not the marriage of the ipod and a phone, its the fact that it will (ideally) have a fantastic UI. Most cellphones these days treat the UI as an afterthought.

I think that the iPhone will pretty much be the same as this http://www.synaptics.com/onyx/ but with an apple 'touch'. Apple is already doing business with this company, and all the recent patents fit perfectly with this product. http://www.synaptics.com/products/pdf/onyx_concept.pdf

There will be no Apple Phone. There, I said it. No phone will be released by Apple.

I really don't see an Apple phone. First there is already a huge market in this area. Apple actually stays away from established product and focuses more on their core products (Computers) and new products that may not have a strong nitch in yet. When Apple started its iPod MP3 players were not a big deal and listening to music was mostly relegated to listening to it on the PC. So Apple took the concept of a portable MP3 Player and made it small enough to be portable and easy enough to use so it can be used all the time time. That is also why they are going into the "iTV" because right now there is no good media center system, that is useful for normal use and you don't need to wire your PC next to your TV. But Cell Phones, Everyone makes them they are already popular, and are in common use. The iPhone will require apple to make deals with Cell Networks, or make its own which is expensive. Then its popularity is based on other products that are in the market and what the provider has to offer.

while i would love this to point to phone's being made by apple.

there are cell phones which are itunes compatible already on the market.

They just have a VERY stupidly limited amount of tracks people can store on them, no matter how large the memory card people put in the phone.

can we say that this restriction by apple sucks? YES APPLE, let loose the restrictions.

We know a phone is coming. Steve said it months ago.

c'mon... enough with the phone already.

I can already watch video, streaming television, connect to the internet with EV-DO, listen to music, play games, and make phone calls on my Samsung A900 (phone sucks by the way). Why would I want a phone made by Apple, other than for syncing purposes?

Sure it's gonna look nice, but just because your girlfriend is hot doesn't mean she can cook too... ya know?

Look at Porche and there ventures into uncharted territory (they created their first SUV)... it absolutely sucks.

And even when it comes out, it'll be a phone. That's it. Nothing special at all. So what....it plays video? Syncs music with iTunes? [...] So what.

That's the real issue right there. The more AAC devices we get (and people use), the more Microsoft loses ground with their WMA format.

I'd much rather see Apple manage my content than Microsoft. And given the size of the Xbox 360, its price and it's loudness, it's no match for the "iTV".

That's why the "iPhone" is extremely important, even if I probably won't ever have one (I don't want my cellphone to drain my music player battery or vice-versa).

When I upgraded to iTunes 7, at the "Installation Type" section of the installer, I selected "Customize". It brings you into a new window that has "iTunes Phone Driver", but you are not able to select it. Does that have anything to do with the iPhone, or is it for the current Verizon iTune enabled phones?

despite its shortcomings, the a900 (i have one too) would be a perfectly acceptable phone if it simply sync'd to address book and iCal. So sync'g, in an iPhone, would be of considerable value to many people. if it also carried much of your iTunes library AND backed up your photos, and could display them, that would be pretty nice. Most of all, as others have noted here, would be a superior GUI, apple's traditional ease-of-use.

The Porsche Cayenne, despite what you or I might think of it, has been a boon for the company.

Yeah and no. Yes i'm fed up of hearing about the iphone. I have to say I am not really interested in the concept but this is probably due to the failure of the ROKR (and yes I knw that wasn't apple really). No i don't think it is played out, evidence keeps cropping up that suggest it is around or at least in concept, and it does seem logical for apple to take this step and produce a combined easy to use device with apple style.

I haven't read about this yet so here goes:

Okay, is it just me.....or does it look like Apple is updating their UI? Usually, if they change their UI in iTunes/QuickTime it is to match the Mac user interface.

Right now, we just got a new scroll bar look and feel on both PC and Mac.....
Is this the design of things to come in the final Leopard release?

Maybe *crosses fingers* a consistant look and feel, or a few "selectable" system themes?

Also, i really like the panel in iTunes that shows information about your iPod. Maybe they'll be bringing a similar feature to other parts of OS X. It does look kinda like a Microsoft html view, but they did it well with great graphics and clean layout.

It sure is nice having a windows phone. I've got the Tmobile MDA. I can't tell you how many times i've reset it. If you are sending a text message, and it checks mail, it will flip back to the mail page and "save" your text message....and you have to find your way back to it, frustrating as all he-double-hockeystick.

Then, the biggest bug I have problems with: Event notifications (sound and vibrations) will all of a sudden stop, I wont know I'm having a call, or a text message, or an appointment. I've got to either reset, or go into preferences, sound settings, and start and stop a test event sound twice...... Its like !!!!!

You're kidding me that Apple is losing market to the Chocolate. I have yet to see anyone with it, and I highly doubt that anyone will ever have one in my presence. People are going to continue to buy what is popular and what works the best, and that is the iPod. There is no way that any company other than Apple would be able to make a device that works as multiple devices and works decently.

why? i think htere is, if you dont beleive me or so go to www.iphone.org it links up to the apple homepage ;)

Now, go to USPTO.gov, open the Trademarks tab, start a new search, and search for "iPhone".

And while you're at it, try a whois on iphone.org and see when Apple registered it. They've been working in this how long? ;-) And ask yourself why in all hell Apple would register a .org for a commercial product?

If Apple releases a phone (thus starting the beginning of the end, where Apple reverts again to having 3-5% of any markets it dabbles in, and where all the music publishers bail from the iTMS, which they never liked anyway), it is 100% certain that it will not be called the iPhone.

But they will not. It would be financial suicide to compete with the other mobile phone makers when you can license the technology to them and continue your dominance of the online music field.

I don't care how many times MacRumors says "confirmed", "reliable", or any other comments with respect to this "product", it's hard to believe, and it'd be a disaster for Apple if they really, seriously, are planning to do this.

It's a driver for iTunes enabled mobile phones such as the ROKR and some models of the RAZR.

It's optional, which is why it's a separate install for iTunes 7. It's probably grayed out because you haven't installed something that would have come with the phone.

The apple phone is the most played out rumor ever, does anyone else think that espousing this rumor is getting old.

Ok, I got the prototype. I have to say, I'm absolutely stunned. It is, by far, the most elegant phone I've ever used. It's tiny, I think if anything it's thinner than the iPod nano, although I haven't seen the latest version.

it uses the touchwheel for everything, and yes, they've done a sort of simulation of the old dial-based phones for dialing, it works very intuitively. And the capacity's good too, with 4G in this unit (apparently the black model will have 8G) It's everything you can ask for. It's sitting on my desk right now. I'm listening to Debussy, and five minutes ago, someone tried to call me and it alerted me with a soft beeping noise in the background. I just hit the "Answer" button and the music was paused. When we hung up, it resumed. No need to take my headset off.

Battery life is excellent. You'd expect it to be compromised by the design, but it isn't, indeed I can get 24 hours of playing time out of this thing and receive and answer calls and not have to recharge.

Best of all is the network compatability. The analog model plugs into any socket based on the RJ11, with an adapter for the various European connectors available too. Great for VoIP too. The digital model is compatible with most ISDN interfaces.

Sounds like I need to update that post. The last paragraph is supposed to be a punchline.
