I have lived for years on nothing but ramed noodles.
Boy I loved college.:p
And yes, maruchan brand is FAR superior to top ramen. Too bad my wife wont let me get them. She refuses to buy anything having to do with styrofoam. And the bricks are too much hassle.
I don't eat ramen noodles...not in line with my healthy diet
If you buy the bricks you dont have to use the packets of MSG concentrate, you know.

anyway a guy i knew used to sprinkle the sauce packet on the hard uncooked noodles and eat them like that...then he would drink lots of water claiming they "expanded a ton in your stomach and made you really full"

sad/(blah * 2) - chicken or creamy chicken, maybe beef
Tired and wanting to wake up - hot chilli
Tired and wanting to sleep - creamy chicken
weird/odd - A MIX! A mix can be very good. But don't try to get 6 diff
flavors into one, because that can be very gross. Well, not gross,
but as gross as ramen noodles get. And hot chilli doesn't mix well.
Indifferent to everything/no mood - beef usually, but basically any
flavor........ I am indifferent towards which is best when I'm in this
mood :D.
Usually my favorite is oriental, but I really like beef sometimes,
and I really like spicy chilli sometimes. In all truth I love them all
sooooooooooo much, so it is hard to compare them. But I am
very experienced when it comes to Ramen. ;)
Wow, that got me in a ramen mood. Im gunna go make me an

I had ramen noodles for the first time in about 15 years on Sunday, and all I kept thinking about was the scem0 loves this ****. Anyways I don't remember the brand, but I'm sure it was cheap. I can probably wait another 15 years before I have that again. The flavor by the way was "oriental".

Maruchan is definitely the best. They have the best flavoring. Either beef or chicken would have to be my favorite.

I remember doing that back in elementary school. Everybody would buy the brick packages (Mr. Noodles), pour the powder into the package, crush the noodles, and eat them like chips. They were great and the best thing was that they were cheaper than chips: $0.25 versus $0.75 a package. The trick was to not pour all of the powder in because then it gets too salty. :)

Lipton's dollar noodle packets are like the gourmet of the cheap noodle niche. But, to be on topic, I perfer anything except the seafood ones. For some reason that's just not right. Over spring break my friend made the most interesting of ramen dishes mixing all kinds of things in them. The best was chicken ramen, with actual chicken pieces in it, and lots of pepper. Yum : )

I like to boil about a pint of... (no, my stomach is beginning to growl at the thought of it) ...ahem! water. Then mix in 3 packs of Ramen and choose from any number of Ramen flavor packs laying in the cubboard.
Make the sauce nice and consistent, then let it boil until the noodles begin to break apart, stir really vigorously, taste one noodle to make certain it's cooked, then plop all of it into a big bowl. Watch the pipping hot noodles swirl around in the sauce. Maybe add some of that red Thai(?)/Vietnamese red sause they used to carry at Panda Express. And voila!
O boy..
Okay, now I gotta go make some... the power is too great. I must worship it or it will destroy me... :D

the key to ramen [only maruchan of course ;)], is BUTTER, lots of freaking butter, and none of the liquid. cook the noodles in water in the M-Wave then drain it, add about a tablespoon or more butter [lots, i mean LOTS of butter, like its going out of style people!], get 'em all sauced up, then put the flavor on. mmmm MMM! WARNING: not for the low-metabolism folks out there, this **** is fat-city! :D
i agree that oriental is the best too.

UGGH! My friend tony used to do this. only to such an extreme as to make his roomates throw up. Half a stick of butter, boiled and drained ramen, a quart of milk. He called it "Milk and Maccaroni" knowing full well it wasn't maccaroni in his bowl. This culinary genius also invented "Chateau", which was a jug of wine and a bottle of mountain dew mixed together. ahh college.

If you like to abuse your taste buds and like to feel some serious HEAT. I recommend Korean Kimche Ramen. You can find it at a good Oriental foods store. It's in red packaging. I guarantee you will not be able to finish it. If it was physically possible, steam would shoot out of your ears while eating it.

Any tonkotsu ramen is good... for the 3-minute type ramen I like Men no Tatsujin, but as for the boil-and-do-everything-by-yourslelf type I like the plain old Sapporo Ichiban...
ok, I guess none of you will get that cause it's all Japanese products, but...

Okay, here's a thread I can chew on. :)
My favourite brands are Nong Shim for Korean and Sapporo Ichiban for Japanese Ramen. Saying Ramen noodles is redundant, by the way, the men part is already noodle enough. :)
The Nissin stuff like Top Ramen and Cup O'Noodles is like wet cardboard. I once rode in the back of a Honda Prelude from Tokyo to Nikko and back, 3 hours each way. We stopped at a rest area on the way back to Tokyo and they had a Nissin vending machine. The water wasn't hot enough and it ended up tasting like lukewarm wet cardboard...eeeeeww.
I usually buy Seafood, Kimchi, Crab, Shrimp, or Miso flavours. I buy the Nong Shim Neoguri (Seafood) by the case.
I think the best fresh Ramen I had was in Tokyo station where they served Mabo Ramen (like Mabo Tofu, the Chinese entree), but unfortunately, I haven't seen any place like that in the states.

What about green onions all diced up?
I use the following (when it's in the frig):
1. Boil water.
2. Put sauce in. (Choose from pile in cabinet).
3. Put in raw egg into boiling broth. Allow it to cook.
4. Tempura. Slice it up and put it in.
5. If I've been by a Korean supermarket, maybe pick up some of their red spicy radish and put that in.
6. Kimchi. If it's available. Put that in.
7. Any more room for noodles? If not, transfer contents to a bigger pan.
8. Add noodles: 3-4 packs.
9. Wait until noodles just begin to lose their firmness. Take out immediately.
10. eat <slurp> eat <slurp> eat... :D
Someone very close to me (who shall remain nameless in case she ever reads this thread because then, I'm dead...) doesn't do that at all. For some reason she wants to simulate Thai food. Yep, you've got it! She puts peanut butter in it. (ick!)

Does anybody else here break up the bricks of ramen so that you don't have extremely long noodles? My mom used to do that, and now I do too...
My favorite flavors are oriental and creamy chicken, and chicken with mushroom. I'm not too sure which brand my mom buys, but it's alright... I wouldn't consider ramen a delicacy, so almost any brand would be good in my eyes (and mouth!)

I hate when the bricks break up! I like the noodles looong. The
less broken up they are, the less amount of noodles will be left
sticking to the side of the bowl, dish, or whatever you cook them
with. I gotta get all I can get ;).

hey scem0? have you ever cooked the noodles without breaking them loose? so that you'd eat them in the flat square that they are like? hehe i always wanted to try that. try and keep it like a brick and then use a knife and fork to eat it...even though it would be soggy.

Knife and fork? Brick?

I think brick refers to the dried shape of the ramen that comes out of the package.
Hmmmm. Properly? I dunno. I eat it with a fork. Sometimes with chopsticks.

I am lucky enough to live in Tokyo and ramen is a standard after a long night out. Not the instant stuff, real freshly made piping hot lots of added extras ramen. There is a great ramen shop near my apartment (actually you can find great ramen shops everywhere in Tokyo!) and the master knows me very well. A large bowl of miso ramen with a heap of vegetables and condiments, half a boiled egg and a side serve of kimchi (spicy Korean picles) and gyoza (how best to describe this...?). You can sit in this ramen shop, but some of the best ones you can only stand...
Also, luv the Ramen Museam (http://www.bento.com/phgal3.html) in Yokahama. Always overeat when I visit and end up peeing ramen soup for a week (sorry for the grossnes, but you get my point!)

Sorry for the double post...
Soba and Udon are also both great.
Without question thou is that ramen is by far my favourite. Can't help but eat it once a week.
In summer you can have 'cold' noodles - with thin sliced ham strands, shredded egg and thin slices of cucumber, all mixed with a flavoursome cold soup stock. Every ramen shop has this in summer and you can even get it from conveniene stores. Have never made it myself because I cannot stand to wait for the noodles to cool after cooking them, the smell is too strong a temptation just to go eat 'em as they are...
A VERY IMPORTANT RAMEN FACT: YOU MUST ONLY EAT WITH CHOSTICKS AND MAKE LOUD SLURPING NOISES

The slurping sounds apply more to udon than anything else. Udon is also known to little kids as tsuyu tsuyu...like the slurping sound itself. :D

I made the most amazing ramen the other day. It is great to be able to tell someone about it. I dont remember the brand, I bought it from an Asian market.... but anyway, I added a little lemongrass, cilantro, and some green onion.. topped it off with some sliced boiled eggs :) good stuff.
and yes.. i ate it with chopsticks and one of those flat bottom spoons that i dont know the name of.
and yes... i did survive off ramen through college, which just ended last may.
