I purchased Warcraft III(argh matey, a land lubber be me, argh) but I cant stand inserting and re-inserting the CD and understand there is a hack so I can just fire up the game.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

that would be nice, i hate the fact that i've installed the game and it takes up nearly 600MB, yet I still have to insert the CD to play, why take up all that (somewhat valuable internal) space unless you can do without the disc???

if there is a hack, i'd love it. (and yes I bought the game :) )

Create a disk image of the CD and keep it on your HD. When you want to run the game, mount the image, the game won't know the difference. This works for Diablo, Warcraft, Starcraft, Ghost Recon, and probably every other Mac game.

Please don't PM me about the hack. It is no longer available.

Is it Disk Copy or disk Utility?

Utility is repair/other stuff.
Copy is I think what you are taking about.

It even works for UT with the OS X port.

don't you drag the CD onto the window and it creates the image?

Yeah, the disk image works. From what I heard and done in the past, just make sure that the image format is "DVD/CD Master" and everything works just fine.

I've done it for UT ported to OSX and American McGee's Alice, and they both load fast!

Disk copy is so cool. I just learned about that encryption you can use to password files. Sweetness.

By creating this disk image is it taking up more of my HD space? More than the installed game running off the cd already takes up?

well if the crack from mac is anything like the windows version, you wont be able to update your warcraft once you do it, its very annoying.

edit: MrMacMan is brain dead: Why would the crack stop you from updating execpt the reasons below?
And technically it aint a 'crack' your making an image of the CD on your Hard Drive.

I think the win 'cracks' edit the WCIII files therefore you can't upgrade, this doesn't.

i am talking about a crack, not copying the cd to the hd. why did you say "why wouldnt you?" what were you referring too.

Okay, so I made a .dmg of WarcraftIII and mounted it and when I open the mounted image the contents are the same as the cds. BUT, when I try to play the game, it still tells me I need to insert the WarcraftIII cd. Do I have to reinstall the cd from the mounted image for it to work? Anybody...anybody....?

And does anyone know if mounting the cd takes up more space on my HD than just using the disc?

put in the cd, click on copy, then go to file, save as disc image and then your set. let it write it. then just mount the image with toast and you set, warcraft on your computer with no cd.

Disk copy --> drag CD into box --> master CD/DVD --> mount it

tada!

perhaps there is something that I'm not getting, but that doesn't work for me. I open disk copy... drag the CD in to the box... choose to create the image in CD/DVD master format... wait while the image is created... mount the image. The image appears on the desktop, and contains all of the data from the cd, but the computer still asks for the cd to be inserted.

If there's some other step you advise taking, I'm all ears.

Weird, that sounds right to me. The only thing I can think of is if you changed the name of the CD on the disk image.

Are you connected to a network with some one that's playing off the same disk? That's the only other thing I can think of.....

QCassidy352

disk image has the same name as the cd... no one else is ever using this cd.

someone else on this thread posted that this just didn't work for them, and ijon said maybe he would have to use toast. Well, it seems like I have the same problem that he did, except I don't have toast.

Yes, it takes up way more space because both have to be installed.

That brings me on to another point, would it be possible to run a game like MOHAA with the disc image method without installing it as it has the app in the cd folder and not just an installer (but i suppose saving would be hard)...

Well after installing you would only need one disk image...

This is how I did it in Panther.

Mount the CD. Fire up "Disk Utility". In the sidebar, you should see the DVD/CD player, "Session 1" and "Warcraft III". Select "Session 1" and from the Images menu, select "New...", "Image from "disk3s1". Then after the "Convert Image" box appears, select "DVD/CD Master" and no encryption and Save.

That should do it! Woo hoo! It does take up quite a bit of disk space and you will have to mount the image each time you boot up the computer.

This also works on OS9 as for the Diablo II/Starcraft/Warcraft 2/Diablo this does not work on OS9

One of the things you should do though is get to the latest version of WCIII

I have to revive this thread from the dead, because I seem to have the exact same problem. I also lost my legitimately purchased WCIII cd. So, on the advice given in this thread, I found a friend with the CD and made a disk image of it. The only problem is it doesn't work! I must be missing something too, because when I am still asked to insert the WCIII cd, even when the image is mounted. I've tried everything! I can't even run the installer from the image of the CD, it wants me to insert the CD too. What am I missing here?

Do you mean they *don't* work for blizzard products? 'Cause warcraft is blizzard...

So, if the disk image isn't going to work, what other options do I have? I paid for the game I should be able to play the damn thing...

you can either use disk utility to burn copied DVD's, or store them as Disk Images (just select the DVD, save the Disk Image as a DVD Master) although you can do the same thing using DVDBackup and remove encryption and region codes at the same time (it will give you a Video_TS folder which you simply open with DVD Player, VLC, etc). To burn copied DVD's it's a bit trickier.

you need to strip the encryption, compress the data to fit on a DVD5, and remove any DB_Store (etc) files from the folder before you burn.

my preferred method

1.DVDBackup (remove encryption)
2.DVDRemaster (compress data to 4.2 GB, or a consumer DVD)
3.DVDImager (creates a disk image and strips the hidden files from folder)
4.insert blank dvd, select your saved disk image, and burn away.

the only program you need to pay for is DVDRemaster, unless you don't mind the fact that the demo cripples (think huge pixels) the signal for 5 seconds every minute which is something like $30.

it is also better than DVD2OneX IMO, and is an OS X app, not Windows port.

other's recommend OSex, DVD2OneX, and Toast but I prefer the tools listed above, and have used both.

you MUST name your disk image using all caps, no spaces. Most people tend to think the DVD needs to be named exactly the same as the original, this is not the case. The only naming requirements are all caps, no spaces.

There is a DMG file that i found (less than 1MB in size) which mounts as the Warcraft III disc image with only the "support" folder on the inside. I needed it because i was going on a long train journey and didn't want to carry any CD's with me. I guess this is fine if you own the game, i'm not too clued up on the matter. Anyway it worked fine for me.

A friend of mine downloaded it for me from one of the P2P networks.

Hope that helps

but what about warcraft??!?

to make a direct copy of the CD, i'd assume all you'd have to do is make a CD Master Disk Image. I own Warcraft 3, and I don't use my Super Drive for anything other than burning DVDs (which I couldn't play War3 while burning a DVD due to my computer's speed), so I have no purpose in creating it. If people are really having that much trouble getting it to work maybe i'll do it just so i'm more familiar with the necessary steps and able to help.

if copying the War3 files from the hard disk, you need to make sure all the hidden files are removed (i.e. DB_Store files, etc.) OS X adds these so it remembers your view preferences from system to system, but it screws up anything not being used as direct data (a DVD for example will not auto start or even play with DB_Store files unless you manually open the Video_TS).

on a side note, i vaguely remember an update to War 3 breaking the ability to run it off a mounted disk image.

Not sure what the problem is for the folks that can't get it to work. I made 1 image when I bought WCIII when it first came out and have been using it ever since. My CD just sits on the shelf.

Just fire up Disk Utility and create the image already. =)

I just tried making a disk image using Disk Utility under 10.3.4 with version 1.15 of Warcraft III and it works fine. Not sure why other people had problems with this.

I did name my file "Session 1" so I'm double clicking on Session 1.cdr to mount the disk image (is disk image the proper term if it's "cdr"?). Worked like a charm with the latest updates and no Toast needed.

I've been using DVD remaster demo and I see the pixel crippling u are talking about. But I thought that came from compressing the 6-8G dvd down to 4G. Do you have DVD remaster?

Most apps don't need a disk image of the actual cd. Just one with the same name. Easiest is to make a folder named exactly the same as the CD, put another folder inside of it and then make a disk image of the first folder. Viola, no CD insertion and very tiny footprint.

Works for Diablo, WC, Civ III... that's all I've tested with the tiny image.
