View Full Version : Study for tomorrow's midterm or install new power supply/fan?

So my replacement power supply and fan for my Loud ass dual 1.25 got here today. But I have a midterm tomorrow and am not AT ALL prepared.

Do I study and be a good student, or install the parts? It'll take a long time to install...if I dont do it tonight though, I'll be working on a film shoot from tomorrow afternoon (after midterm) until Sunday, so I wont get to it for about a week.

That is the dilema.

Study. You can always hook up the supply another time.

Study and get your degree(s)!

Not an April fools joke- I just found out that am being laid off. There is a 99% chance that after 5 years with the same organization I will no longer have a job soon. I do not have a degree. Focus and do the work. You can screw around later.

Study and get your degree(s)!

See it doesnt work that way. I'm not in high school so this idea of skipping isnt really valid.

If I wait, I'm leaving FROM the exam to go work on a film shoot. I'm the Assistant Director so I gotta be there.

We finish shooting on Sunday, which means I wont get to install it until Monday. :(

I never skipped a minute in highschool. However in college I skipped many a class....

Study now, install the fan right before you go to sleep. studying when you are really tired isn't that productive anyway.

Or, wile away the afternoon on Macrumors! :D

damn you and your logic...

Point taken. Grrr...

Yeah, I'll study and wait...I doubt I can do it tonight after studying though, cause it looks like it'll take a few hours.

:(

Oh well....guess I'll have to see if it makes a difference next week.

Replace the power supply and THEN study. A power supply and fan shouldn't take you long... takes me about 10 minutes...

obviously you should study and then worry about your fan, but hey, if you need answers to every cross road in life that comes your way that's your life.

hehehe....I don't know man, I'm feelin the itch of senioritis....even though I dont graduate this year....

The prob is that the instructions are really long and it appears I have to remove most of my computer to get to the power supply. Then put it all back.

So I guess it's gotta wait. I'm really interested to see how big a difference it makes(better be good). Maybe I could keep it on when I sleep for a change.....and then gain precious render time!!!

Study now, and then install the fan later. You probably aren't going to have time to use your computer in the next few days if you are filming.

Installing it would make a nice study break. Get out of your head for a bit and do something physical with your hands.

The instructions aren't too hard, you just need to try to identify all the screws, levers and parts coming in and going out. I hard the hardest time with getting the new power supply back in because I wasn't pressing in on the back of the side panel.

It makes a HUGE difference in noise, too.

It's very funny that you say this now....I can't study any more man. It's killing me. So I just decided (right before I read this) to do that....or read the directions and make sure I have what I need... ;) Hopefully my computer will be quiet in a bit....

[EDIT] How necessary is the magnetized phillip's head screwdriver? I only have non-magnetized...

I've done it a few times with HD's.......just need to be more patient....I wasnt sure if there was a specific screw that would "need" it...that's all....

If they're the same (and it doesnt look too hard) it shouldnt be a problem

OK. So it's A LOT QUIETER!!!!

Instead of a Jet she purrs like a kitten....Oh man....it's like a 10-20 decibal difference....and Im only guessing this by ear....maybe more.

MUCH QUIETER.

The only issue I had was that my screwdrivers handle was too fat, preventing me from getting to the screw that holds the optical drive to the case.

After WAY TOO LONG of searching for another, I said 'F' it and used a #1 instead of #2 and a lot of brute force. That worked :D

SO MUCH QUIETER!!!! Def worth the money and time ;)

It's kinda creepy. I got so used to it being loud, it doesnt sound like my computer anymore :(

But in a nice way...maybe I can leave it on to Fold at night now instead of it sleeping when I do :)

I have a dual 1.25 in my office under the desk and it makes noise once in a while but its not really bothersome. probably since I leave my office at the end of the day. If I had this thing at home I'd be doing the same thing.

Glad you got the fan in - so when's the test?

Test is in 4 hours 50 minutes...Ugh :(

As long as I can pull off nothing worse then a C i'll be happy, though....a B or B- is ideal.

I couldnt leave it on and sleep....My bed is only about 5 feet awat from the computer, so even though it is quieter, and I mean, A LOT, it's still a bit loud and annoying to sleep with it on. Oh well.

And D, isn't your 1.25 the newer model, not the one released in August? Cause only the august ones were really loud.

nah, its the August version cause when we went to the Apple Store to get a new machine they had one of the dual 1.25 (top end) in the back that they were going to put out as a special. Got a great price, better cache and a superdrive. A comperably equipped new 1.25 would have been much more. We lucked out.:D

It was a lot more fun than studying, I can tell you that!!!

I think I learned enough to pass the test, which is all that matters at the end of the day. ;)

ha ha...well if that's what your goal is then u are golden... ;)

I used to procrastinate a lot myself...studying never was something I did well. That's the main reason why I dropped out of college & got a tech school degree for graphic design. I just wanted to get my degree in what I knew I was going to do and get on with my life. ;)

well, Im in the last 2 General Education classes that I ever have to take. So I really dont care any more. I've done so many already and want to only be animating, these things like papers and tests get in the way of me being creative. It's hard not to be able to do what I love because I have to learn about xyz.

I need a grade no lower than a C to have it count (our dept has pretty high/harsh policies regarding grades, they expect a lot). So I got a B- on the 1st (of 2) midterms. If I get a B- on this one I dont need to worry when the final comes around. :D

Good luck - but I have to ask, what made you pick this class? And what were some of your other options?

Well, A, I needed to take a class in the College of Arts and Sciences. Then it had to be at a time that did not conflict with any of my film classes. In addition, No GenEd classes before 11am, because I found myself not going or paying attention becuase I was too tired that early in the past.

After narrowing it down from that, it was a matter of finding any classes that I find interesting.

Dont get me wrong, the subject is fascinating, it's just that I dont have the books cause they cost too much money and I dont like how it gets in the way. If I didnt have a test or anything, and it was just for knowledge it'd be great.

I just want to concentrate on my craft, I can learn about it from reading books on my own, with my own time....

that's exactly my point...I was completely like that...

it's only now that I want to learn about worldly things...but it means something to me this time around where before it didn't...

we all do what works best for us and I am where I want to be... ;)

I think I knew enough. Only only 5 point (out of 100) that I had to leave without an answer...I had one flat out guess, and then 2-3 others that I kinda knew, so I may or may not have answered correctly. But I think I passed, maybe even a B or B+, surprivingly I knew more than last time....or so I thought....we'll see...

BTW it's 2:55am, and I just got back from the shoot today, must goto sleep soon....
