View Full Version : How do you relax?
mymemory

During the day I have found out that if I play some music my mind just fly away. Since my divorced from music I have been developing some temper, specially because with no music or sound at all in my studio I'm able to focus a lot more.
When I go to sleep I just think I'm flotting some where. Pretty corny stuff until images of the riots and stuff come to my mind and I turn in to anger and I try to think in to something else. Pretty crazy.
During the night I like to go out with some friend to drink something in a cafe. The problem is that now ther are about 15 kids during the night asking for money or food, so I end up locked in my house.
What I do too is to watch tv with my girlfrind, we watch Friens, Scrubs, Good Morning Miami and finally South Park (a big inflence in me).
I really would like to smoke a huge ammount of pot but I do not smoke and that is really bad, I did it once about 2 years ago and it got me so bad that I just do not want to have the temptation close again.
What do you do to relax?

I am a pretty relaxed person, so I rarely catch myself very
tense, and usually when I do, just the knowledge of me
being tense causes me to relax. But when I am really mad,
or something like that, martial arts, ramen noodles, or the
computer releaves my stress. :)
and what vniow says below of course ;) .

i can't relax...i tend to not do anything about the buildup of stress and stuff like that until i explode and start yelling at someone until i feel tired.
sometimes that means yelling at my parents for several hours for no reason at all and just doing malicious things just for the heck of it.
once in a while i get into a fight with someone much stronger and bigger than me.

Well, I am tense before baseball and football games. To relax, I close my eyes and visualize what I am going to do in every situation in either sport.
I stay quiet and think. I never really yell unless I am pissed. I cuss at myself if I screw up.
I think baseball practice is relaxing. Its fun, you learn, you get better, and there is no pressure on you, so everythings ok.
Football practice is tense. Always have to watch out of your eye incase a linebacker or safety is coming in on you. Its all instincts....
Oh, and I like to chill. Just with friends and stuff. Listen to music and get some ladies up in the joint.

I can spend the entire night talking about life & such over wine. ;)

To relax I like to go to concerts, any kind of concert. My wife and I love bluegrass music, and luckley we live in the foothills of the appalachian mountans. Any day of the week their is at least one folk/bluegrass, jam band, is playing with in 30 miles from our house. My favorite bar always has good bands playing on the weekend. Acoustic Syndicate, Snake oil medicine show, The Lary Keel experance, to name a few. Nothing is better than great acoustic music, and a fine hand crafted pale ale, to ease the soul.
Bonnaroo is coming up soon, and The Dead are playing:D Time to do some relaxin and a lot of tapen'.

a nice pint down my "local" is always a good idea, especially seeing as all the girls that work there think i'm great, and they're all ridiculously stunning Brasilians and Argentinians :D , and the fact that i buy one pint of guinness and get two free usually.
listening to music is always a goodun too, reading a magazine or two, coming here, wandering around Prospect Park, and just relaxing with close friends chatting.
(and when i have a girlfriend, just spending time together doing not much at all :) )

Well, I post here mostly relives stress, which I do too much of. Music is key: Daft Punk, White Stripes, The Vines, Chemical Brothers ... etc all help during a bad day.
Lets see no illegal substances to relive stress but I again go back to vniow's comment.
You post whatever you want Vniow. I agree that that is used but I can't imagine relieving daily stress like that... ;)

my real life has stress relievers built into it:
1. i own the company i work for
2. i'm passionate about what i do
3. i love the people i work with
4. i work out regularly
whenever stress builds up, it's usually time to take a trip (road or otherwise). getting out of the city usually does the trick. failing that, it's writing or reading.

i'm in that stage of driving where going out at 2 AM in my civic when no one is around and just blasting music is way relaxing. i like the dark outside, especially when it's kinda misting (god, though, i go the speed limit when it's wet especially).
when i get depressed, depressing music like some of radiohead's stuff is usually relaxing. beyond that, a nap is pretty good in general.

Did someone say geek?
I relax three ways:
(1) Doing anything on any computer - I can never get enough.
(2) Twiddling, fiddling, manipulating, whatever you call it. My hands don't like to be idle, so I'll pick up any small object and "worry" it when my hands have nothing else to do. Gimmie a desk toy and I'll be happy.
(3) Music, anytime I'm awake. I have CDs or the radio on anytime I can.

I listen to music. Dance. Maybe listen to a radio station that has a pretty goofy DJ, read books, read magazines, read comic books and graphic novels, write, draw, go to MacRumors, shoot film and/or DV, edit on Final Cut Pro, visit the Apple store in Pasadena, sleep, watch movies on HBO, watch movies in general, spend time with girlfriend (this can either be relaxing or not), sit in church (I don't go because anyone forces me, I go when nobody else is around and everything is really peaceful. :D)... pray? Yes, that really relieves a lot of stress. I just shrug and figure, "Hey, why worry? It's out of my hands." or "Hey, God has a better idea what's going on than I do, why worry?"
I'd like to say I workout even though I'm pretty fit, but I'm a bit lazy about that. Maybe I'll take up Yoga or Pilates. Dunno. I guess it would be relaxing to be able to fit your ankle behind your head... NOT! :D

Actually, many of us get to spend more and more time each day with the simple task of deleting spam. If you don't get too red in the face from anger or embarrassment, the simple act of pressing the DELETE key over and over could be the 21st century's most common form of relaxation. To add to the fun, you could use different fingers each time you press the key or you could tap it in a rhythmic pattern as you hum your favorite song. Maybe that drum solo from In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida would do.

Exercise. Do some kind of athletic activity several times a week. I like to hike. I have several short 4 mile or so hikes that I like to do without having to drive anywhere, and try to go for a 10+ mile hike on the weekend when i'm not swamped. Martial arts were a wonderful outlet for stress too. Go running, rock climbing, kayaking, biking, swimming, anything. It hurts while your doing it, but you will feel good afterwards. And thats the majority of your time anyway. Enjoy!

Lately, I've been relaxing by writing my own spam filtering program, to run on a mail server. I like programming, especially writing parsers and string manipulation programs, and I'm having a great time adding one feature after another as I think of them. Unlike projects at work, this one has no deadline, so I work on it whenever I feel like it.

But no, this is just for the mail server I run. It won't be particularly better than any other string-comparison rule-based filter (although I taught it to spot hidden words like "viagra" in Subjects like "Buy v1a-g`a`r`a here!!"). For me, the fun part was studying the RFCs for the e-mail format, learning how sendmail works, and the joy of programming.

I hardly ever relax. If anything, it's being on the internet and listening to my choice of hard music.
If relaxing is releasing tension or certain feelings, that relaxing is typing up at least a page of poetry based on that singular feeling.
If relaxing is calming down to a state of minimal activity, then it's being with certain people, watching a movie, or a combination.

Just sounds as though you have your own prefernces for relaxing. That you prefer not to put a label on your down time. The human body needs to have periods of rest, beside the need for 7 - 8 hours of sleep at might!
I really like you new Avatrar King Cobra! What significance does it have?

What do you mean put a label on my down time? It's not a label, it's choosing to relax by choice. There's no label for that.

I was invited to a concert in Palm Springs so I took time off work and drove there from Los Angeles yesterday. It was 112 degrees Fahrenheit there today. I discovered that I was driving down Bob Hope Drive (one of the major streets there) on Bob Hope's 100th birthday!
Anyway, since it was a day to relax, I took along my 1200-page Sendmail book (http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/sendmail3/) and read another 200 pages. I suppose that when "normal" people read, they want to know whether the butler committed the murder, whether the 50-foot space slug will be defeated by the space brigade, or what Scarlett and Rhett are doing. But not me. I read a novel now and then, but I'd almost always prefer to curl up with a technical manual of some kind.

Yea its pretty hot down here in Palm Springs. What concert did you go to and where? I didn't here about it hehe.
It was really hot yesterday, humid also. In football I was sweatin my brains out! Oh well, its still nice here.
Dont play golf here in the summer. While it may be fun, its soooo hot. The best thing to do for locals is either to go down to the Marrior Resort (very nice, and free if you act like you stay there), or to just go to the beach.
But not this summer for me :( Im gonna try and really bulk up!

It was the Palm Desert Middle School (http://www.dsusd.k12.ca.us/schools/pdms/Pantherband/pantherband.htm) year-end band concert at the Westin. They have four bands, including a marching band and a darn good jazz band!

Music can be soothing for me and takes my mind off (school) work and other matters by making me think off a movie story line that could go along with it.
Watch Amelie (http://www.amelie-themovie.com/), inspirational stuff, it's one of the best movies.
Divorce sucks, I've never been through it or been a part of it but I think I know how hard it is.

I do all kinds of things. I go fishing.......fishing is very relaxing since you can just sit somewhere on a five gallon bucket and catch fish and when the fish aren't biting just sit. I go hunting......it relaxes me unless it is really cold and then in that case I am too tight because the body is cold and trying to tighten up to warm up. Music is good.....I do love praise and worship music and Point of Grace....can't get enough of the girls! My fiancee' giving me a backrub and shoulder massage is a big time reliever and relaxer.....I have a shoulder that the muscles on it just rid up my neck and then tighten up with a huge big knot and it hurts so bad that it drives me nuts and causes me to sometimes go numb and I lose range of motion and can't moe the shoulder or arm.....thank to an injury I suffered back in college and all the stress back then! A new electric massage machine helps too.....it allows me to release. A hot bath or shower works too.....especially when the shoulder is acting up....or if my stomach hurts. Spending the entire day sleeping or in bed is good too. Goofing off on the basketball court is relaxing; but unfortunately for me, it can turn competitive and serious very easily for me and then I really get into it and get reallly round up (not sure of sp?) and get very intense.....in which case its not relaxing.....I used to play competitive varsity basketball......that is why it can turn very competitive very quickly for me. A nice picnic in the park by a stream is relaxing for me.....I used to love going to Stainbrook park (named after my mom's family.....my uncle Ruben owned the property before giving it to the Army Engineering Corps as a park) and grill something and eat and then sit in front of the quiet little stream under the shade of a tree......it is very quiet there.....nothing to disturb you. Going to church is a big stress reliever for me since it allows me to be where I am most home and feel the most accepted and loved and know that Jesus is there.
