I saw an article on this phenomenon somewhere. While it would be completely stupid to pay for something like this, it's incredibly smart to sell it. There's a web sight where people will get you 3,000 points for every 300 bucks you spend.

I know, it's rediculous, but some people, who have nothing better to spend their money on, will spend their money on it.
