Apple has finally released via the 'Get A Mac' website (http://www.apple.com/getamac/) the three ads that have been curiously making the rounds on Canadian TV (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060922114922.shtml) and some Apple Stores (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060905220630.shtml). The ads are as follows:

1. Counselor (http://movies.apple.com/movies/us/apple/getamac/counselor_480x376.mov)
2. Better Results (http://movies.apple.com/movies/us/apple/getamac/betterresults_480x376.mov) (guest-starring Gisele Bündchen)
3. Self Pity (http://movies.apple.com/movies/us/apple/getamac/selfpity_480x376.mov)

Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen's involvement had been rumored since May (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/05/20060530115721.shtml), when her official website reported that she had been photographed for an ad campaign concerning the Mac.

I've hated these ads since the beginning and the news ones don't do anything to help. Apple could convey the same message more effectively by pushing by just showing the advantages of the Mac and they wouldn't look like a bunch of arrogant jerks going it. That being said, Gisele Bündchen needs to be in more ads.

Okay, don't take this as me bashing other cultures, but couldn't they have found an attractive model who could've said, "Hi, I'm a Mac home movie" in a fashion that was easier to understand?

I mean, someone might take that as "uh oh... my Mac home Movie is going to have an accent!"

...okay not really. I just had to listen to it a couple times to figure out what she was actually saying... and not to gawk. Not at all.

Apple should assign some people to make ads, and some people to build computers. Different employees for different tasks. I'm going to write to Apple with that idea :) This would also help with all the times when Apple stops making Macs because their four Mac people are all too busy designing iPods ;)

I thought that when PC rolled over and said "let me just lay here and depreciate" I might wet my pants! As an accountant, I catch a lot of grief for being like PC. However,I always grab my trusty 12" PB when I have presentations to make, I KNOW that it will see the projector w/o any work on my part.
Look at what a 3 year old PB brings on the open market vs a three year old windows machine in terms of % of original purchase price. PCs just sit there and depreciate! :)

If they showed you in the ad, then people would never go to a mac store to find out what it is all about. The ads peek curiousity, making people laugh and wanting to find out what is the big difference.

I don't think they are trying to get an all out switch. I think they are more trying to plant seeds tat may pique people's interest next time a computer purchase comes up.

My mum had no idea Macs don't get viruses until she saw the ads.

I think that the Better Results ad was offensive, as it crossed the line implicating that being a biological female with emphasized femininity is superior to being a biological male who is transsexual.

A more direct analogy might have been two transsexuals, a PC one who didn't put any effort or style into it, and a Mac one who did. Using a REAL female on the Mac side is just cheating! :)

Yep I want a new MacBook too...at least tomorrow is a Tuesday.
And Apple product releases tend to be on a Wednesday, on weeks where the Tuesday follows a holiday (Columbus Day).

Thus, even if THIS is the week for new MacBook Pros (which may well precede new MacBooks by many weeks), there's a good chance it won't be tommorrow. Thus, I have been looking forward to tomorrow's howls of anguish for some time :) (And then if C2D MBP's do come this week, there will be the howls from people who think Apple's lowest-end laptop--MacBook--must have the highest-end laptop chip in the world. Even though Core 1 is an amazing chip already by any standards to date.)

I like most of the ads that Apple has done, but some border on the edge of tasteless, with the PC bashing going a bit too far. I agree, though, that the idea here is to generate interest; getting people into stores to look at Macs is where you can make a sale (some people in my classes are talking about getting a mac now that they've had a chance to mess around on my MBP), while giving everything away in a commercial doesn't force people to leave their chairs. That said, 'Better Results' joins my personal favorites list, along with 'Accident' and 'Out of the Box.'

My personal prediction for new MBPs: to be released on Black Friday with the option of a black aluminum case! ;)

Oct 9, 2006, 07:58 PM
I think I'm with the camp that isn't too thrilled with how Macs are being portrayed as being more "fun" than a PC. Yes, some of the ads mention that OS X can run MS Office, but I don't think that it's really enough to convince anyone that you can use a Mac for pretty much any general or specialized computing task (CAD excluded, thanks to AutoDesk)

I think its pretty obvious that its meant to be seen as a man in a dress and not a transsexual. I'm trans and I don't see it as offensive. Didn't find it as funny as most of the posters here but not offensive. The ads that involve transgender people and some sort of deception on the other hand do get me a bit hot-headed though.

Nobody is offended by a pretty model in an ad. The same applies to man who is making a jerk out of himself by being dressed with no real effort like a woman.

I am pretty sure this was discussed when the ad was developped and how it was made was the only way to make it politically correct...

And it is funnier anyway! :D

Not at all.

This is called charm.
And maybe you would gain from listening more people from other states and countries talking… Don't flame me, just kidding :D

I wasn't offended at the ad after seeing it. However I still don't understand why it is funny

I'm probably reading too much into it, but in 'Self Pity' when PC looks up, you see the reflection of blue in his glasses. Subliminal Blue Screen of Death anyone? ;)

I am also trying to figure that out out. it blue and then a little purple. Hard to tell.

Anyone have other good ideas on the reflection?

Seeing Mac in a suit is a cool way to continually show apple's versatility. Ability to satisfy work and play....well done!

these ads are all genius. i am sure they spend a lot of time working on the script to not imply anything more than what is on the surface.

all these adds do is perpetuate the sterotype of the arrogant mac user. it makes us look like a holes and the reason why it takes so long to undestand why it's funny is because their not. heres to apple buying icomic life and creatuing the adventures of mac and pc as a comic cast so that the "funny" never stops..

Why don't they show these in the U.K?....and also the new nano ad ; it hasn't been aired in the U.K either.:(

It's been mentioned before that in the UK (or maybe European Union?) it's illegal to target a single competitor in advertising. I suppose it's a debatable point as to whether "PC" is targeting a single software competitor - Microsoft Windows - or generic hardware computers (Dell, HP, etc, etc). It must be that the lawyers have adcised against. (Then there's the fact that both Mac and PC speak with American accents, so the ads would have to re-shot with UK actors.)

Apple's advertizing MS Office.. does that mean it's (non-rosetta version) almost here?

No.... Not even slightly (http://www.hardmac.com/news/2006-10-10/#6016)
Original article (http://www.macnn.com/articles/06/10/10/mac.office.2007.delayed/) ... meaning Office is probably the last piece of major used software that will get Universal.

MS Office 2007, which is due here in the next few months will be a universal binary. It's already in the beta testing stages and available to certain levels of MSDN subscribers. There has been a Windows beta version circulated on a more public level. I think most people are expecting February for the Windows release of Office 2007 and March/April for the Mac version.

Just a couple production value thoughts...
I have some experience in tv commercial production. It is a very interesting process. I can't help but think that the Gisele commercial was probably shot a variety of ways, with many takes. For some reason, maybe to seem somehow more exotic, they selected a version where she is just a bit hard to understand. I guarantee you that there were other, more understandable versions shot.

I also noticed that when Mac asks to see PC's movie, he is a bit hard to understand as well.

PC's expression after seeing Mac's movie is PRICELESS. In the closeup he does a little shudder/head shake that is pure comic genius.

One odd thing, when Gisele walks in, she sort of rotates a bit to the right, which causes SOMETHING (hair?) to appear at about elbow height on her left side. It looks a little weird, almost like a bit of wire. I would have edited it out.

Love the line "what's with the big boy clothes"

In Counselor, which I like, check out the counselors hand gestures, very odd, and pretty tricky choreography. The body language of Mac and PC are wonderfully done.

Done....

It might be fun if in one of these commerials, maybe the last in the series, if PC gets a zinger in on Mac, making fun of Mac's smarty pants attitude...

A friend of mine was about to buy a refurbished 17" or 20" Core Duo iMac (Yonah),
but first wanted to check with the "Mac Expert" (me, LOL) before she dropped the cash.
I directed her to the 20" Core 2 Duo instead (Merom), since it came with 1 GB RAM,
and would be more future-proof with 64-bit. And with the newly lowered price, a much better buy.

As I was helping her set it up - and giving her some tips, this life-long PC user told me:

"I have to admit that part of the reason I finally got a Mac was because of those ads.
I just love them!!"

Needless to say, she is absolutely enthralled with her new iMac.

FWIW...

I'm a little late on the upshot here, but have any of you caught these mock ads on YouTube?

They're silly, and not particularly insulting to Apple or Windows, but they do captured the spirit of the ads.
