No issues yet!

Actually I think that's about the same size at the 10.2.4 update which was 40 as well.

Anyways, update went fine, no problems. Took about ten minutes with optimization, etc. and restart.

After I installed the update it swapped my monitors: left went to the right and vice versa. A quick visit to the preferences pane fixed it though.

I was hoping that the code contained some hybrid mutative soft genome that would "grow" dual 970's in my dual 1.25 box. >sigh< One can dream...

yup. it s nice it has been published. Just one remark. What the hell has the apple server got for connection. A friend of mine got about 600 kb sec ! thats so cool. With some thousand people downloading the update, the server is still able to send 600 kb to one user...

Just installed it on both of my titaniums and i am using airport without a base station and now all websites load. If somebody else had the problem where sherlock didn't work or sites like macrumors didn't load, that is now fixed. I also noticed that my range is up for airport. Also i heard people haveing battery problems before this update but i haent' noticed any differnce in my battery life. But this actually seems to be a very useful update.

600kb is actually very little. Thats less than 10 x 64k modem. 600KB is more than halv a MegaByte. The most I have got with my connection is 1.2 MB/sec (MegaByte).

One word: AKAMAI.

Basically, Akamai has tons of servers all over the place and they route your connection to the closest server.

Mudbug

First - as for the updates, the one I can notice right off the bat is connecting my mac to the Windows machines in my office. SMB connections are at least twice and quick, and the response over the network is as if the network drives are local to the machine. That beats the tar out of doing it in 10.2.4.

Second - Apple's servers are on akamai.net's backbone, which is an OC-12 line (or multiple of those... I dunno...) That's the equivalent of roughly 50MB/sec (that's BYTES, not BITS) line speed per line, distributed among multiple download servers. The faster your line speed and number of simultaneous connections, the faster you can download.

I've got a cable T-3 connection, and can repeatedly download from them a cool 3 megabits/sec uninterrupted. That's pretty quick for things like this. My download took approx 3 minutes, with another 3 for optimization.

Uh oh. this is sounding like last time. I had customized my apache to work with php and set up my own default directory. It took me over a day to fix everything.

You would think in 2003 something like Apache would have a user friendly interface of configuring stuff.

WOW...I have always noticed small improvements in speed in my older G3 Macs, but after updating my iBook 600Mhz, it for the first time feels truly fluid and things are about as smooth as they can be on a 600Mhz G3. I am excited to get home and see how it works on the iMac 400. I have to give Apple credit, they have made OSX work MUCH better on older G3's and G4's over the past year or so. Thank you for remembering people that can't buy the newest thing every few months.

There are several improvements on the interface, I can feel the difference, do not hold out, get this update! I can tell it is a good one. Mail feels much better, Networking is better much quicker connect with the servers. I hope it will also fix a problem I had with my iBook not wanting to pick up an IP from the server once in awhile at the schoool. I guess we will have to see about. Good update, we will see if it is good enough to keep us going until next fall and Panther....

these are my first observations:

1. Networking is A LOT faster - in my case
AFP over airport (11). e.g. (dis)connecting, browsing server-volumes in finderetc.

2. sound is MUUUCH more resposive! at last!....

I'm sure there is a lot more to it...

No ... 39MB isn't very big at all. Windows 2000 or XP service packs are almost always around the 100MB.

And Novell Netware service packs are around 250 to 300 MB these days.

So this 39MB really is a steal ;)

Yeah, something is wrong with 10.2.5, Apache, and my iBook.

At boot/startup, OSX says it is starting up Apache.

Web Sharing is unchecked (even though it was checked before installing 10.2.5, and even though I turn it on, lock the prefs, wait, and eventually restart.) If I try to turn on Apache, it just sits there like a bump-on-a-log. Waited 30 minutes before finally giving up and restarting.

I can "sudo apachectl graceful", and it says "httpd started", but it doesn't show up in top or ps.

If I point my browser at http://127.0.0.1/ I get "can't find server". Oddly enough, though, I can still point my browser at my QTSSadmin (http://127.0.0.1:1220/) and it works!!?!!

And maybe I missed this before, but I get a quick "?" folder icon, and a quick MacOS folder icon (detecting startup disk) before boot. Is that new?

the ONLY thing i lost when i updated was that the display changed from millions of colors to thousands. big deal... 2 seconds in sys prefs/displays and it was fixed.

mail seems a little bit faster. i have many folders and subfolders set up which is off an imap server which is never quick. idisk mounts MUCH faster and unmounts just as quickly. i like it. classic also starts up about twice as fast as it used to.

now i only wish they would update isync so i can sync my P800!! cmon apple!!

Things that have occurred to me since the update to 10.2.5:

#1. Minimizing my favorites window to the dock caused a kernel panic.

#2. Trying to connect to a server on the network (Via connect to server...) did in fact cause a kernel panic. *I have been able to reproduce this. It happened while minimizing the connect to server window. Hey, so maybe #1 was a result of this.

3. Boot up is faster. However, what ever application I use first opens quickly but unresponsive for about 15 seconds. I get the spinning wheel of rainbow death!

I am running 10.2.5 on a 350 g4 with 512 mgs of ram. I did not have these problems with 10.2.4. So apple is either trying to make owners of older macs buy new ones by gumming up the system, or there is something wrong with my update. BTW I had not made any third-party system software modifications.

I will install the combo update and let anyone know if that solved my problem.

I might get this now after discovering that it has a fix for the reseting of the time, leaving it at 1970.

My iBook does this, however, i am on version 10.2.1 and its a hefty 89 megs.

it still didn't fix a problem with audio: I've got a Griffin iMic, but I'm using it for input only, so the audio output option seems to screw things up:

If you're using SSL for https via libssl.so

BE WARNED!

make a copy of your libssl.so binary found at

/usr/libexec/httpd/

after running the update you will need to rename the new one Apple installs and re-copy the old one back.

This worked for me.

I had this same problem with the last security update.

It may be that you will only need to re-create your ssl.key and ssl.cert files I haven't tried as yet.

Any other thoughts?

Oh, I left out a detail... after hitting the connect button a smaller dialog box appears... if you minimizie that window... bam! kernel panic. Does this happen to anybody else? Maybe my network is messed up... but it was working fine before. Don't you think if it can't find the server it should just say something like: Cannot connect to server?

thanks puffmarvin, that helped.

As for my problems with Apache, they might somehow to be related to Marc Lynage's (sp?) PHP package, WebDAV, and Expat. Marc's page (http://www.entropy.ch) is down, so I'm guessing he might have updated to 10.2.5 and his Apache too is suffering.

I found a suggestion on O'Reilly's website to move the WebDAV AddModule below/after the PHP AddModule, but no dice.

Commenting out the WebDAV Add and LoadModules in httpd.conf fixed it.

I'll add it back later when/if I ever use/need it.

make a copy of your libssl.so binary found at

/usr/libexec/httpd/

after running the update you will need to rename the new one Apple installs and re-copy the old one back.

This worked for me.

Any other thoughts?

having done some more looking in to this one I found a reply to a post I placed on MacOSXHints.com here Mac OS X Hints article (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20030402004719491)

There is a final solution for most people in the comments.

Actually from what I remember reading from the last time this happened to everyone your custom config is not gone. It's simply archived and placed in a different location. Where? I don't remember you will have to search for it.

You're right, of course, but it's written so often, it must be real. :D How many times have you seen someone write something like "it's huge, it's 180mb"?

Of course, how are they really stored on those really really small transistors? :D (Maybe they're stored in millibits.)

I ran xBench with 10.2.5 on my little iMac DV and found that overall my score (don't laugh) with 10.2.3 was 33.51 and with 10.2.5 it is 34.96. What suprised me was that in the CPU area my score went from 33.92 (10.2.3) to 40.89 (10.2.5). That improvement is a lot for a little 400Mhz computer like mine. Do you think OS would have anything to do with a better CPU score? Nothing else has changed on the computer (320MB of memory). Disk test improved from 40.37 to 45.52 and again nothing changed, I actually have a little more HD space used up now then I did before. Graphics stayed the same except for a little improvement in OpenGL (about a frame a second)

I would be interested in hearing anyone with better machines and see if they see CPU and disk improvement as well. If nothing else has changed maybe 10.2.5 is a little more efficient.

Also, one last thing? Why did 13 people rate this as being negative??? I always think free updates are a positive thing!

The problem isn't just one "First Post".

It's the five "First Posts" that invariably get posted... then the responses to those first posts... and the fact that suddenly there re 5-10 off-topic posts in the first page of the thread.

Much like this post. I only post this to explain to readers. And yes, in any other situation, your post would be deleted as well. Please send further responses on this topic to me in a Private Message or post it in the community section. Further posts on this topic in this thread will be deleted.

Think if I said I had a 1.5KΩ resistor. This would be 1500Ω. Now think if I said I am runnng 1mA (milliamp) or current through it. This would be .001A. Translate that to 100,000mB. This would represent 100 bits. I don't know why you would list it that way, but that's how I figure you'd use it.

The speed difference you are seeing with XBench is well within the error potential. Rerunning XBench at different times after startup after running other apps, simply the time of the month (montly, weekly tasks haven't been performed) can have a degree of factor in XBench. Also are you running the same version of XBench that you tested with prior to the upgrade? Another factor is the upgrade prebinds all the apps and the system therefore fixing possible binding problems. All in all a good way to look at XBench is as an approximate score rather then an exact score. From my experience unless the overall score is +/- more then 5% I ignore the difference.

The last update messed up mounting MicroDrives (and some flash media) when using PC adapters. This really sucked when trying to get 1GB of pictures out of a camera, using USB is just too slow. But this update makes me a happy camper... the drive mounts, launches iPhoto, and imports at great speeds.

Is there supposed to be a new version of Mail?

My Mail says 1.2.5 (v552) after the update, I didn't check it before. But oddly in the System Profiler utility it says Mail was last modified in Nov 2002.

Yes mail was modified to improve foreign language use and to improve mutiple server access.

My old version is 1.2.3 (v551)

This list of updates comes from versiontracker.com and seems to be the most complete and detailed.

What's new in this version:

Bluetooth Setup Assistant now works with certain Microsoft keyboards and mouse devices.
Includes Bluetooth support for Nokia 7650 and P800 phones.
Improves compatibility for discs burned with certain Panasonic consumer burners.
Adds Image Capture support for Canon EOS 10D, ZR65, and ZR 70 cameras.
Adds disc burning support for several device-LaCie d2 DVD Multi U&I Drive and d2 CD-RW 52x24x52x, Visual Frontier COHH-B1-A48 and COSP-B1-C24, MacPower Cold Chisel 24x12x24x8x, and these BUSlink devices: FW5252FM FireWire 52x24x52x CD-RW drive, FW4848FM FireWire 48x12x48x CD-RW Drive, RW4040FM FireWire 40x12x40 CD-RW Drive.
Addresses an issue in which domain name lookups could fail if the DNS server responded with a very large reply packet.
Improves the way that LDAPv3 connections time out when idle.
Addresses a potential data loss issue that could occur when copying certain files to an SMB volume.
Addresses issues with Internet Sharing when certain types of DSL or cable modem connections are shared.
Improves security by resolving an issue in which a guest could gain read access to the contents of a shared Drop Box folder remotely.
The Internet preference pane can now store .Mac passwords that are up to 32 characters long.
Addresses an issue in which some Apple internal modems could not establish or maintain a connection to certain Scandinavian Internet service providers
Improves Mail's selection of character encoding for messages sent in these languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Icelandic, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian.
Improves Mail responsiveness for accounts configured with multiple POP servers, when the servers are unavailable.
Addresses an issue in which an application could unexpectedly quit when printing, if /tmp was missing or unavailable.
Addresses an issue in which a damaged GIF file, such as a Web site graphic, could cause an application to unexpectedly quit.
Addresses an issue in which certain PICT graphics could not be displayed.
Addresses an issue in which the date may unexpectedly be set to 1969 or 1970 during startup.
Addresses an issue when using the Hanin input method for Traditional Chinese in which Carbon applications could unexpectedly quit if a modifier key (such as Control) was pressed when no text insertion point was available.
Addresses an issue in which Classic fails to start ("Error 1016") when applications available to a non-Admin user are restricted.
Addresses an issue in which the Classic environment could become unresponsive after placing a Classic application's save confirmation dialog box in the background.
Addresses an issue in which using the Command-Option-Shift-Q key command would immediately quit the Classic environment.
Improves the reliability of AppleEvents traffic (inter-application communication) between software running in the Classic environment and native Mac OS X; addresses an issue in which a user might not be able to logout after using a Mac OS 9 version of America Online (AOL).

For most people a fresh install from the ground up will cure there problems. I find with each update that my system performs much better if I just reinstall the system. It's really not all that big of a deal. Yes it can be time consuming on a slow connection if you haven't saved your updaters but you don't have to download all the updates it will simply give you the combo update when you fire off Software Update.

Most people will find that there system has been running slow and that doing the fresh install fixes all sorts of things that have been bugging them but just thought were problems caused by this or that program or update.

All's fine on my G3 iMac... no sign of kernel panics or anything. iCal and all my normal apps works. No date reset. And the traffic light widgets in iPhoto look amateurish.

I ran Xbench before and after updating from 10.2.4 to 10.2.5. I updated prebinding before running the first tests, and restarted as well. I restarted after updating (a second restart after the required one).

I have a G3 iMac, 500MHz, 640MB RAM, and numerous background processes that I didn't bother to quite (e.g. Snard, Searchling, YoupiKey, etc.)

A few of the numbers...
Before / After
Overall 41.51 / 41.58
Quartz Graphics 51.14 / 51.36
User Interface 45.08 / 44.03
Disk Test 40.79 / 42.46
Conclusion: It didn't do a heck of a lot performance-wise, technically. Still, it feels a bit snappier, but that's probably effects of the reboot and prebinding.

in 10.2.4, the dvd window would go grey whenever i resized or changed apps. (i would have to "wipe" the window with the controller window to get the vid to appear, whatever the controller went over turned from grey to the actual video, until i resized or changed apps) now, it works fine when resizing or changing apps, but when it's playing or paused, some of the text in the apps in the foreground appears to be see through. i can actually see what the dvd player is playing through the text. i guess this is better than not being able to use my remote to resize.

Okay, if you can't hold the apple key down and click and drag it off the menu bar then go to System preferences. In system preferences click the International pane and then select the input menu tab. Once there you should see a bunch of flags make sure that the only flag selected is the one for your native language/country. I assume that's the US but I could be wrong.

Just updated a 350 MHz Indigo iMac, and a 366 MHz blueberry iBook. No problems whatsoever.

I did run disk utility and repaired permissions on them both last week, so maybe that had an effect :)

For those having kernal panics, I found an article at apple discussions that recommended unplugging your usb hub. I unplugged mine and have not had a crash yet (30 min.)

that's easy set the US language to on close it. Re-open it and set the US to off and it will go away.

While most upgrades have been very smooth, this one really has hosed my system. It starts up like normal, but minutes into working I get in 5 languages that i need to restart the computer. That's all I get... there is some number at the bottom but hell if I know what it means... I'm away on business so I can't tell you the number. I'm wondering if anyone else is having any similar problems. I am using 3 haxies from unsanity... fruitmenu, xounds, and windowshade... I also use dragthing but thats all. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem? It seems like when I launch an app is when it freezes.

would appreciate any ideas.

thanks:)

Same thing happened to me, it took a little head scratching, as I normally hide my doc on the right side of the screen. When the computer came up after the restart, not only could I not find the dock, I couldn't move the curosr onto the other monitor in the usual screen to screen direction. After a few moments of panic, I "unhid" the dock using "System Preferences:Dock" saw where it was, on the right side of the other monitor, decided to look at "System Preferences: Displays: Arrangement" and swapped the position back to where the two monitors actually were and everything behaved fine.

Another issue: the upgrade to 10.2.5 killed my Wacom Intuos tablet driver. I amd using what they have on their web site as their latest: 4.7.5-6. It doesn't load at startup and the tablet doesn't work.

I bet reinstalling the drivers will fix it. That or simply repairing disk permissions but I would just reinstll first.

Remove any system hack or modifier. These are the most common hangup with new system updates and more then likely you will have to wait until the hack has been updated to be compatible with the latest release.

What you are seeing is how a Kernel Panic is presented in 10.2.

Do you have any external devices plugged-in besides the apple keyboard and mouse? If so unplug them and try again. If it still continues I recommend the doing the system reinstall that saves your prefs and updating from a freshly installed system.

Done that mate!

If I look in the languages menu, there is a British and American flag. If I go to customise, the American flag isn't ticked. Ticking then un-ticking gets rid of the menu flag, but it's back again after restart:mad:

Stupid and probably not likely to fix it but have you tried repairing your disk permissions? They have an odd effect on seemingly unrelated issues sometimes.

I also had kernel panics immediately after upgrading to 10.2.5 using Software Update. I could at most get 5 minutes of operation before failure, and a required power-off and reboot. Since the kernel panic message mentioned USBHub in the software stack, I thought I'd disconnect my extra USB (2.0) hub with iMic, printer, UPS and Palm connector. The system then kept running long enough for me to download the OS X 10.2.5 Combo updater and re-install 10.2.5 from this.

So far, the system is stable, with USB hub unconnected, but it still fails within 5 minutes when the hub is re-connected. Now I need to wait for a fix or downgrade, painfully I suspect.

My belkin hub has given no such problems. I'm not sure based on your post but did you do a fresh install of 10.2 and then do the combo update on that?

I performed a system install and updat today. Just so I would have a fresh system with the new update. I do this every time with every update since it really prevents slow downs and potential errors due to the update on a used system. I really recommend it since it is completely painless and really doesn't take all that much time. This would most likely fix your flag problem too.

Waiting is a good choice Dan. My normally rock soild QuickSilver is acting like PC these days since installing 10.2.5. I have experienced several system and applications crashes. Disk Doctor, Disk Warrior, Jaguar Cleaner, fsck, First Aid have not slowed the crashing as yet.

I have looked on some other forums and there are lots of folks telling my story. There is come converstation about devices on USB ports causing the problem. I have two, a Epson 890 and a Lexar SmartMedia reader. Otherwise this a real plain Jane QuickSilver.

My recommendations is to wait on this upgrade until the fix is in.

I just downloaded and installed 10.2.5 and Safari beta 2. Nothing seems faster after I rebooted; in fact, Safari appeared a little sucker-punched on startup, and Ghost Recon quit on me mid-game (I started an already saved game. saved before the 10.2.5 update), then would not let me start subsequent games. I don't get it.

A millibit is what you have if you know that a certain event occurred, provided that the event in question has approximately a 99.93071% chance of occurring in any given test. A millibit doesn't tell you much. :)

To anyone with problems after the update. Reinstall OSX. It's not a big deal just quit complaining about your problems and do it. It took me all of 30 minutes to do the other day. After you do that reapair disk permissions and you will be suprised how things will fly. No hang-ups, glitches, or bugs just smooth as silk for me.

I got a very strange effect after installing 10.2.5. Now, when I try to print an MS Word for OS X doc, with an inserted PICT file, it prints the figure in mirror image. I'm working around it at the moment by saving that page as a pdf and printing that (which comes out correctly, but with lowered resolution).

I know that one of the fixes had to do with presentation of PICTS, but this is too weird.

anybody have any ideas?

That is exactly right. I e-mailed Wacom tech support and they answered back in 2 days. This is what they said:

"Good afternoon-
___ They once again changed a number of things in the latest OS._ What I would do just to be clean about the tablet driver is go to the GO menu > Applications > Wacom > and run the "remove Wacom" then restart your system, and download and install the latest tablet driver._ This is the cleanliest way and tends to circumvent other issues of trying to repair an install._"

I did that, and my tablet works again.

Here's the latest print driver for your laserjet.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?locale=en_US&lang=English+%28US%29&pnameOID=14918&basePartNum=lj609&locBasepartNum=lj-5646-5&os=Mac+OS+X&tech=Driver

If the driver has an uninstall feature use that first then reinstall. If not just try reinstalling it for now and see if it works.

A few of the numbers...
Before / After
Overall 41.51 / 41.58
Quartz Graphics 51.14 / 51.36
User Interface 45.08 / 44.03
Disk Test 40.79 / 42.46
Conclusion: It didn't do a heck of a lot performance-wise, technically. Still, it feels a bit snappier, but that's probably effects of the reboot and prebinding.

I had all kinds of problems after installing 10.2.5. After multiple sessions with Disk Doctor, Disk Warrior, Jaguar Cleaner, First Aid I can finally run over night without a crash of eith the system or an application.

So today I thought I would run Xbench and see where the performance is before and after. Here are a few of the numbers from on my Quicksilver

........................ 10.2.4 / 10.2.5
Results ..............84.77 / 63.81

quartz................99.23 / 72.12
open gl.............106.44 / 64.82

The slow user infterface seems to explain the dog slow, jerky dock performance.

Do a fresh install of 10.2 using the archive install feature then run software update and run all the updaters.

This should fix all your probelems.

Also get rid of Norton Utilities. It will cause more problems then it will fix in OSX.

We're having the same problem with our Powermac G4. I can't do a clean install from my Jaguar disk - cos it won't read it. When I installed 10.2.5 it STOLE!! my iCal. To do a fresh install off the 10.2 disc either insert the disc at the login screen or insert the disc when in the finder and click the ignore button. Then chose restart and hold the C-Key down during start up. This will boot the computer off the 10.2 disc. Chose the archive installation option. After it's done run software update and install all the updates. You will then have to restart and you will want to run software update again to get the rest of the updates. This should fix all of your problems.
