Hello, I hope there can be some help out there. I searched the threads on how to connect a MAC OS X 10.4.8 to a Windows XP using a wireless ad hoc network w/o a router. I found a posting on how this should work, but it has never worked. I think the problem is on Windows XP. Anyway here is the set up:

Desktop set up w/ windows XP
I have a wired DSL connection to a Windows PC desktop running Windows XP. I also have a wireless card installed in the desktop. My goal was to share the internet connection on this desktop, share files with it, etc...

1) I created a wireless ad hoc network on the desktop with WPA (a) I then rean XP's network set-up...choosing the 1st option which would allow me to share the Desktop's wired DSL connection (hoping that my MAC could then join the wireless ad hoc network and receive internet) (b) I also choose the option in the Network set up to allow file sharing on the desk top. Choose a workgroup and a Computer name. (c) On the desktop I then created a folder, and allowed it to be shared. Double checking the set up, I went to my Network places making sure the workgroup and file were on it. No problem so far. Here are the settings the desktop had

Wireless connection
IP:192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

MAC set up
1) Following the advice on a thread on here ( http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=54704 ) I:(a) changed the workgroup name to correspond w/ the PC (b) allowed file sharing, windows sharing, printer/fax sharing (c) made sure my account was checked to allow windows to access

2) I then connected to the wireless ad hoc network:

IP address: 169.168.254.14 (option "using DHCP")
subnet:255.255.0.0

The problem
Now nothing will connect, neither computer sees eachother, and I can't ping the MAC. I assume the problem is something in how I set-up the network or some firewall problems (The Windows Desktop is running the standard windows firewall and Symmantec; the Mac has its firewall on and is running Virex). Now I then manually configured the MAC to:

IP:192.168.0.2
Subnet:255.255.255.0

Hoping this would allow them to see eachother. Still no dice. If anyone can help w/ instructions some ideas I would greatly appreciate it. I have spent 5 hrs the past 3 days and nothing is working. If I didn't explain what I have done please ask any question I will clarify anything I can.

THANKS!!!!
