This thread (http://www.ina-community.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=250224&perpage=30&highlight=macintosh&pagenumber=9) makes reference to UT2K3 being released after 10.2.5. Since 10.2.5 is out, does that mean UT2K3 is due out any day?

Man, I hope so. I've been dying to try out my new system with unreal. I was addicted to UT when it came out, I'm sure, I'll be the same with UT2k3....

I'm just jealous that PC users got it before I did.

I have played UT2K3 on my PC, but I want to use it in native OS X so I haven't bought it yet. I wasn't impresssed by the program, but I really enjoy the mods that UT has. I was poking around today and I was glad to see that there are quite a few interesting mods out now for UT2K3.

I can't wait!

that is hilarious! i don't know. i've heard some people say it rocks and some people say it sucks. IMO it's a totally different game but a familiar feel. but i love it and i can't wait till the day it comes out for OS X.

It is never coming.

No really it is coming, it will just be un-expected, like out of the blew someone gets a mac order catalog and on the front has UT2K3, I swear so much damned secrecy.

DreaminDirector
Apr 12, 2003, 01:19 PM
Why all the secrecy? I mean, it's not like apple where they need to sell of existing product or anything. Eh, I guess we know that it IS coming soon, so I shouldn't complain much.

Also, when UT2K3 comes out, anyone here know if someone could host a server for us MacRumors members? I'd love to play against you guys rather than a bunch of random guys (and gals, I know they're gamers too....).

It aint apple's fault for games, the best thing they can do it make them easier to port or for dev. to make it. :D

If it aint too complaced, I suppose there would be many people to host, 24/7 is another story, if it doesn't own too much CPU I suppose I could... :D

the only way i will get UT2k3 for mac is if i get a new mac...you really need the power to push the graphics capabilities to the extreme...that with high framerates and a good mouse make for amazing game play!

anybody remember the kitchen/bedroom/church boards from UT? theyve made their way onto UT2k3...only better:D

Official word that the demo has been sent to MacSoft this morning. (http://www.ina-community.com/forums/showthread.php?&threadid=287556)

It means that anyday now the demo should be availible. Macsoft will be testing and preparing the installer.

I just read somewhere else that there were many OpenGL fixes made in 10.2.5 which allowed the frames per second to run at such a rate that performance was acceptable for UT 2003.

We are all game starved Mac-ites any games such as this one will look like the holy grail good or not.

It's very rare that these games come our way (mac game fans). I, like the rest of us, am alittle excited. I was a big fan of the first one. Truth is, with the stress I was able to blow off because of playing it, I was able to get through college. So, I'm a lifelong fan. And, like I said, if it's anything like the first one (UT), then I'll be more than happy.

It's just one more avatar in a long line of avatars that scrape the violent edge of decency. I'll have to edit it so that she shows physical damage and beats herself to death over time.

xlr8yourmac.com posted a early review of the ATI9700 the week before last and in it he said he would have ut2k3 the following week to do some more tests. Since then nothing. He hasn't posted any more on the subject though he's a week over due now.

I got the same impression, but I do not think I will feel the same way about the full release version in its current form. The demo is basically UT with just one new game type. I found that the annoucer detracted from the experience. It was a little too much like Quake IMHO. However, the modders have had almost 6 months with it on the PC side. There looks like some cool stuff that they have released. Also the first Bonus Pack (http://www.unrealtournament2003.com/) has been released. (Does anybody play UT without all of the updates? I doubt it because it is weak.)

So I think that the delay is ok, from my point of veiw, because I would have just gotten bored with it anyway. (In its initial release version.)

Now I can't wait. :)

KILL! KILL! KILL!

Bring this game ON!

(Bought a third 512mb RAM chip to max out my 933/Quicksilver tower this week... yep, bought it just 'cause good ol' UT is on the way! Hope my system can handle the madness. Anyone have the machinery requirements for UT2K3?)

DreaminDirector
Apr 15, 2003, 12:52 PM
You're right about the mods. No one I know plays UT stock (or "without mods"). When the full mac version comes out, we can use the PC mods right? I can't remember if that's how it worked with UT.

I'm excited too because I just bought a dual 1.25 (FW800) and a GeForce4 Ti card. I bought it mainly for work, but I can not wait to see UT2K3's frame rate on it.

Maybe I should start another thread, but I want to see what everyone's favorite mods were for UT.

Ya know I was reading that and it hit me. I've known for a few weeks that they have been waiting for 10.2.5 for UT2K3 because of a problem with OpenGL and ATI cards. Well what if Apple and ATI caused the delay on the ATI9700 on purpose. Maybe they delayed it so they wouldn't have screaming customers complaining that there ATI9700 doesn't work as advertised.

If this is the case that means we should be getting video card updates sooner and faster now that the system problems has been cured.

Really I don't have any one source. This one I found at SpyMac and the last one I found at deviantart.com. It's just a matter of seeing a potential gif when you come across it. I have a load of animated gifs bouncing pointers etc. that you see everyday when surfing the web but most people miss them or just don't notice them.

Yeah well I'm kind of weird when it comes to denoting time. I don't really have any use for it and forget the date (year sometimes) and time all the time. The only reason I ever use clocks is so that I can make it to scheduled appointments or work or such. I don't even carry a watch or anything.

Well I'm just rambling anyhow I was going to say that anything after noon is afternoon to me. Well at least until midnight. I would have not said afternoon if I had realized we had started a new day. That's my other quirk about time. Midnight is a new day. When people still say today it bugs me for some reason when they are really referring to yesterday.

In how I have really gone off subject now.

Speaking of the Greatest Game That Ever Was/Is, do any of you UT Heads remember the following:

1. The sound patch that converted "HEAD SHOT!" to "CROTCH SHOT!" with a hillbilly voice? Always cracked me up.

Flie Planet's copy of Redneck Wars (http://www.fileplanet.com/files/80000/85844.shtml)

I got a majority of maps from File planet. I also just play alot on-line and look for interesting Map names. Then (on my PC) I used a program to pull the cache out to be useful. I am sure that the cache can be pulled from the Mac to be playable. I just haven't looked for a program or the method of doing it. (I think you just rename the files and put them in the proper directories.)

Also what are your favorite servers. I used to play a lot on MacAddict server but there just didn't seem to be enough people on there. I then roamed around a bit but it seemed like everywhere I went there were bunches of people cheating which really takes the fun out of it.

Patience I guess. I look for servers that are half full. I usually don't like crowded servers. The problem of getting into servers is exasperated with Cshp problems. I downloaded a whole load of Cshp's yesterday and installed them, but I still had 25% kick me off for invalid versions of this or that. Loads of Cshp's to install on your Mac. (http://www.clanvikings.org/download/cshp/)

I am going to work on it some more, but 99% of the servers on the list are "open" but all of that version mismatch stuff sure does hurt my Mac gaming experiance. :)

They are programs designed to stop cheaters. Unfortunately, when a Mac downloads the Cshp, like a PC does, something gets messed up and the server refuses allow access to the Mac. So to get around this problem, you have to download and install the Cshp before you access the server. (That way the Cshp doesn't get messed up in the download.) (Installing involves dragging the Cshp to the system folder. How Mac like. :D)

The next time you connect to the server, the server sees the Cshp and doesn't send it to you, and the Cshp works properly and says that you aren't cheating.

Unfortunately that means the Mac users have to keep on top of these Cshps if they want to play all of the servers out there. The site I linked above has everything to version 5, and I thought I was good when I installed all of those, but my favorite server (when I was on a PC) was on 6. :( Oh well, I will get there someday. :)

By the way my favorite UT mod is Jailbreak. (http://www.planetjailbreak.com/) Under OS X the announcements are messed up, but game play is ok.

I see that there is a new version of Jailbreak, (When I found the link) so I will try it tonight. Mabey it fixes the sound problem.

I think UT2K3 is going to be better than UT, once all of the mods are ported. I think it was blown up a little too much, but I think it will be a cool game once all of the tinkerers have their way with it.

I am not fond of UT straight out of the box. It is only really fun after you have installed all of the extras.

Yes. I had to work tonight, so I didn't get a chance to hunt out the newer versions. If I find them I will post their location. If you install them just ignore the replace file warning. Alot of the later cshps had duplicate files.

The original reason of the delay and this most recent delay as I understand it was an incompatibility with ATI cards. Part of which was fixed with 10.2.5. Up until this latest system update the ATI cards had OpenGL problems.

So in a manner of speak NVidia, ATI it really doesn't matter they've both caused aggravating delays in our valuable gaming time. I prefer ATI too but currently have an NVidia because it was the cheap way to go.

ATI just rulez period at the moment doesn't matter if you have a Mac or a PC. Well it does a little if you have a Mac as you can't get the ATI9700 except as an OEM purchase yet. Damn Apple. It's truly a love/hate relationship sometimes.

well, a G4 is per clock faster than a (in my case AMD Athlon) Pentium by a good bit, plus i've been hearing about how they've been doing a great job at optimizing the game (which they could have done a lot better job at on the PC side). So a 933 G4 won't run the game at max detail settings, but it'll run it a hell of a lot better than a 1 GHz Pentium 3 (i would even go so far as to say a 1.67 GHz ). One thing about ut2k3 though, even if you have a duel 1.43 GHz G4, the game is going to run like crap if you don't have a good video card.

Makes me wanna start researching the Ti Card as an upgrade to the one I have. Been wondering if it'd make any difference... Any o' you maniacs got some scoop on upgrading to the nVidia Ti cards in a 933 G4 Quicksilver?

DreaminDirector
Apr 25, 2003, 06:18 PM
I dont see why the ti card wouldn't work in a 933mhz Quiksilver. If you do get it, it's a kick ass card. I put one in my dual 1.25 and it rocks. I finally got UTX to run on my tower and it rocks. I get no lag at full detail. I'm drooling over just the demo release of UT2K3.

Has anyone heard of any good mods that will be on UT2K3? I dusted off the ol' UT cd and played a bit. I come to realize that one fun factor of the game is a mod called "Health Bunnies". Poor little bunnies replace the little blue health tubes and you have to shoot them for 5 points of health. Sad, but damn funny....

Any mods that look promising?

Wow, thanks Mangoman. It's just something I put together to get a job, which, sadly, hasn't worked yet. The site hasn't been updated in a while because I've been working on some film projects.

Back to the TiCard. I recommend getting one if you want to run any games. I'm not partial to ATI or NVidia, but either 9700 or the Titanium GeForce 4 would kick ass.

I'm PM'ed you too Mangoman,

I just noticed something odd on Apple's game pages: http://www.apple.com/games/articles/2003/04/garagegames/

Read through only a paragraph or so, and you will find a link to an apple article about UT2K3. However, there is no article, it is broken. But why would Apple be doing an article about a game that is not comming for the mac?

Looks like we might have it in our hands pretty soon! Yeah!

Hey MacBandit, I just installed the Marathon: Resurrection umod file by dragging and dropping it into the "UMOD Installer". It opens up classic, but the installation worked just fine.

speaking of marathon: any of you old school Marathon fans out there should check out Marathon: Resurrection. It's a LARGE download, but it's a pretty good modification of the Unreal engine and it brings back alittle nostalgia.

This was found and posted today... (http://icculus.org/cgi-bin/finger/finger.pl?user=icculus)

It is the finger of Ryan C. Gordon He apparently has something to do with UT, but I haven't researched it. Looks like it is close...

Unreal Tournament 2003:
2225 patch is out.
Digital Extremes Bonus Pack is out.
Epic Bonus Pack is out.
New demo is out, for those that want to try it with all the bug fixes but
haven't put down their money yet.

I think we have a solid Mac demo now...it's passing through the channels to
go public. Have patience, grasshopper.

At the end of theshow, the night sky is lit up like it was day, and the

A la red faction with destructable terrain. Now thats innovative (of red faction that is), but i assume its quite hard to implement.

Red Faction 2 is damn good. There are only rare times where you have to think, and usually it's not too hard. It's quite innovative too, with the GeoMod engine (destructible environments) and the double fisting of every weapon. If you have a PS2, definitely check out Red Faction 2.

I guess we can treat this as a page one rumor. :D

And macgamefiles.com is not responding.... I guess they are not ready for the demand.... OR this is a very cute DOS attack on them using the forum readers desparation for ut2k3....

Finally played it on my powerbook! It's awesome! But frame rate a little slow (800mhz, 32MB Video, 512RAM) and I can't wait to put it on my home system (1.25Dual, 128MB TiCard, 1.256 RAM)! Oh yeah that's what I'm talking about!!!!

Just played on-line on my 1Ghz Powerbook. Played great over airport! My frames dropped sometimes to 20, but they never seemed to get in my way. I noticed some lag on some servers, but play was AWESOME!

OK, you guys ready????

Just played for about an hour. I recommend everyone who wants an amazing experience to go buy a titanium geforce4 or the radeon 9700 if you can afford it. It is friggin' insane game play! Full detail at full screen and I see no lag in the frame rate.

I didn't know the 9700 weren't out yet. I remember somewhere that Apple had a built to order Powermac with them. My bad.

Yeah, 128MB of video Ram is definitely what you need.

Ok, now that the demo is here, what kind of mods are we expecting to get?

I'm running the demo on my Dual 1.25Ghz, 1.256GB RAM and a GeForce4 Ti card (128MB video ram). Frame rates averages around 42 FPS, and drops to around 27 FPS in intense fighting. What really impresses me is that I'm getting these stats with all of the settings on high detail and running at 1280x1024 resolution.

I'm just drooling for the full version now.

Hmmmmm. Wonder if a Ti card would make any difference on my 933/Quicksilver. Like I've flapped about before, the RAM's maxed out, but it's that soon to be ancient processor that makes me wonder if the Ti is worth the money.

Just can't blow $400 on a card that gives me minimal improvement over the current 4mx variety that already working.

By the way, I'm REALLY diggin' the gameplay. This is scary good stuff...

The OEM one can be purchased for under $300 and yes you will see an improvement maybe a vast one depending on what your current card is.

You will just have to look for the redeemer. Screw the demo levels load up a game server with with some good levels and play with real people. It's a lot more fun and challenging.

just played the demo on my 17" PB. i have a few complaints

they made the game too good. i find myself glued to my screen. The game screams over airport and i have all the graphic goodies maxed out.

on behalf of everyone who do a 9 - 5 i condem the UT people for making a game sooo addictive that you feel guilty even leaving it to go to the washroom.

well with that out of the way - just wanna say thank god im a student and i got no school!!! all night UT fest!!

Tell that to my demo I downloaded then. I went looking for servers last night and found a few with maps I hadn't seen. When I joined them it said downloading and then I was on some really great maps. When I play the demo I can only play two maps. Is that the same for you? That's why I played server games last night. I played on a total of 3 totally different maps from the demo. At least as far as I know. Maybe there are more maps to the demo that I don't know about.

It could be that I was just trying different game play and getting into maps that I didn't know were in the demo. Though it did say downloading.

If you have a non standard resolution, like my 1280x854 then you can have it widescreen by editing the UT2003.ini file in your /Home/Library/Application Support/UnrealTournemnt2003 Demo/System folder

the game is MUCH more fun widescreen!!!

also, someone needs to run a MacRumors server! the Mac demo doesn't have a command line server but they have one for linux if someone wants to set one up. hhhmmmm.... I wonder if they would mind if i set one up at work??? :D

From the results I have seen the quantity of RAM in the computer has little to nothing to do with the FPS that people are achieving with UT2003. The only RAM that is showing nearly any affect is that on the video card. All in all the UT and UT2003 is a bloated code nightmare and the disparity between high end machines and low end machines is very little. You can see this for yourself by simply maxing out all the graphics options and checking the FPS and then minimizing all the graphics options and comparing the two sets of results you will see that there is little difference.

It is true that extra ram might help background tasks while running UT2003 but like I said from the results I've seen there has been little more then a 1FPS disparity from someone with 256MB or ram running OSX to someone with 1GB or more.

Not on UT2K3 it doesn't. Actually UT2K3 is optimizied for the NVidia and the Ti4600 has faster frame rates thent he ATI9700 in it. Just check here (http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/fpsdb/fpsdb.lasso).

I agree wholeheartedly and am waiting for the ATI9700 myself but if I had the money right now I would not. For one the ATI9700 will not be $300 when it comes out and second of all the ATI9700 is not out for retail and there is no eta for it.

I am saying that when you get a powermac and such and order the 9700 they price it, apple, when ordering the powermac, have the same price to upgrade to Ti/9700.

Hopefully when it goes Mac Retail it will be similar. :)

That's true however when I purchased my MDD powermac. I got $100 off by downgrading from the spec ATI9000 to the G4MX. That's another $100 towards a better graphics card I can buy. I did this for one since I didn't want the Ti4600 and two I didn't feel it was worth the $300 upgrade. Well if I apply the $100 I saved towards a top of the line $300 card it's the equivalant of a $200 upgrade. I don't think in most cases it's worth buying the upgraded hardware from Apple if you can purchase it later and install it on your own.

I do realize however that in some cases you can't get the same hardware over the counter or you can't get it at all. In those cases you have to make a judgement call.

Hey I have some great tips. I don't know if you know about adrenaline but once your adrenaline reaches 100 there are some special moves you can do. Press your direction keys in the multiples given for the special moves.

4x forward - Speed
4x backwards - booster
2x right + 2x left - Invisibility
2x forward + 2x backwards - berserk

Also double jumping is pretty self-explanatory. Jump then jump again at the top of the arc of your jump. Well you can also Wall jump. You either jump right next to a wall or jump into a wall. Then you double tap the directional key away from the wall. This will cause you to jump off the wall.

The last great thing I didn't know was that the shield weapon can be used to break your fall. Just use the right mouse button and it generates a shield if you then jump off a high place it will absorb the fall.

Here's a link for a bunch of tips and faqs.

The coolest one is invisibility but booster is a close second which feeds your health from the adrenaline giving you up to 199 health.

I am sitting outside making sure that they don't kill themselves while I frag people on the net. (FYI, UT2K3 over airport works great, and a logitech optical mouse works great on blue jeans. So TiBook on one leg and the mouse on the other.)

Isn't life good?!? :D

damn, that's just a commercial for UT2K3. Watch your kids, kill some friends.

It is addicting, isn't it....

ok, going back to play a little before I have to do some work....

:) It could be a switch commercial.

<Begin Apple switch music....>

"I used to use PC's but summer would really suck. I mean my kids are always like, we want to go outside, get the pool out, stop sitting in a dark room playing on the computer.

"I bought a TiBook and now it isn't a problem. I play on the computer and watch my kids outside. Apple gave me back my life without me having to give up UT2K3. Thank you Apple. :Sniff:"

:D

By the way has anybody played with the buddy list? Anybody want to give up their UT names so we can shoot eachother?

FYI I play under... Stelliform. :D

I use the same name that I use here just to keep things simple if we ever get that MacRumors frag server up and going.

I've used "Muffin" for a long time. As a former U.S. Marine, I know the machismo drill, and I don't feel the need to strut -- with a name. So I go the opposite route, and use something silly as my handle.

I've found that guys really dislike gettin' waxed by a player named "Muffin".

Doesn't mean I'm not cocky, though. Always willing to talk trash while playing UT. Especially to guys who say things like, "I OWNED you!" to other players.

ANYway...

Muffin is a hilarious UT name! When I was bored I would sometimes play with my name as a_gerbil. :D

I once played against a guy names a_kid_in_a_wheelchair. So you would get messages like. You killed a_kid_in_a_Wheelchair. It made you take a second look....

By the way, what do you use dreamin?

Wow. Great idea. Think of the potential names :

You killed...

...any_chance_for_love.
...Your_Own_Mother (I think I've see that one done before)
...me_and_youre_gonna_pay!

etc etc.

I prefer having a name so that when someone is killed by me they get a funny line. For example.....

You were killed by 'a baby in diapers'
You were killed by 'masturbating too much'

You get the point.

I have found that my video has improved since i have reset the resolution to 1280x856 in the ini file. (full screen on my TiBook.) I was getting some funny effects on some screens and the went away at the higher resolution.

MrMacMan, if you hosted a server then let someone know about it!!! I would have been there!

I use ExoticFish as my handle now, but I used to use "Fluffy" for the same reason as mangoman. Not that I'm any good now, but back when I played Quake 2 religiously I used to get lots of negative comments when "Fluffy" ranked #1. People hate that... but I love it!

Acually I did, I said 'I'm going to make a server now' on like page 7 or something...

I left it on overnight, no one I say joined, at most there were 2 people in it, fighting 2 bots...

edit: the worst thing about a dedicated server is:
a) you can't join it (yes I know there is the other option, but the non-dedicated uses alot of CPU all the time)
b) you need to know all of the commands
c) it runs in terminal so you really need to know the commands.

Okay well, next time I go dedicated hosting, upon request (and a hella lotta help) I'll put it up again.

Things you guys need to know are that:
a) I know very little about hosting it execpt the basic functions in the 'create a server' page... etc.

I host DeathMatch (I think it is more popular) the 2 demo maps, some bots untill you have 4 people in server and max is 10 people... I have no idea on bandwitch use/CPU/Memory so...
Someone needs to clue me in on thoses things and when using dedicated... all the terminal stuff.

Thanks all.

I actually did quite a bit of research on the dedicated servers you can get all the information I dug up over on this thread.

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26644

Also here is a direct link explaining the hardware demands of a dedicated server. To put it simply it doesn't take much of a computer just a decent internet connection.

How much bandwitch is 10 people gonna use, yes I have hosted, but the dedicated terminal thing just sat there, I was expecting something like
'x joined'
'x killed bota'

I just got off of what is probably my 15th hour of playing the demo... (I know you guys are way ahead of me.) However, here is my observation. Gameplay for me is 90% of what it used to feel like in UT. I have finally gotten used to the controls so that the game is almost second nature.

I think alot of the belly aching about ut2k3 is that the game is different from the original, and you can't just pick it up and play it like the old one. It has taken alot of time with each weapon for it to feel comfortable. Now I can switch without thinking to whatever weapon is appropriate. I also can translocate qwickly and switch back to my weapon with ease.

So now that I have gotten accustomed to the feel of UT2K3 I think it is vastly superior to UT. Beyond the graphics, the game requires more finesse to be played well. The weapons require more skill and they are more balanced. I think dumbing down the rocket launcher to 3 rockets is smart. I also like the tighter flak spread so that you actually have to aim. The redeamer flying is more difficult to control (Which is good) and the harder visibility with the sniper weapons on magnify is awesome.

All these things reduce the slight unfair advantage of a certain weapon and make skill more a necessity to play.

So I give ut2k3 two thumbs up! And I can't wait for the full version.

This is pretty much the same conclussion I have come to. I do think that it helps greatly to have a mouse with at least 3 buttons. I have the translocator set to one of them. I also set the best weapon to scroll down and I set next weapon to scrol up. Every little key change you can do so you can use every function makes a big difference. I know having things like the translocator handy made a big difference. Also I reorganized the weapon list so that it was in order of my preference. That way no matter what when I hit scroll down I get a weapon I want. Learning how to double jump and wall jump are also critical and finally if your near any adrenaline pills collect them and use them when the time is right.
