Just browsing the forums when I read this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24383) and saw scem0 give us the origins/breakdown of his username. Got me thinking, how did everyone go about deciding what to have as their macrumors username????
mine, is from my favourite car, the "Lancia Delta HF Integrale evoluzione", before the days of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution I might add :) but not before the days of the BMW and Mercedes evo's (right iGav??)
hmm, now there's a car that i always dreamed about owning, the BMW M3 evo.
here it is, in my favourite colour (only on this car mind):

Lets see
My AIM(aol eww) username - Mrmacman23
23 came out of the blue... so I dropped it
And basically that is it. I've had some quite random account over the years but I'm sticking to this.
The 'Mr' comes from me being to serious and dealing with adult matters when too young to deal with them and macman was already taken so gimme a break. :D
RBMaraman
Apr 14, 2003, 11:23 PM
The R is the first letter of my first name.
The B is the first letter of my middle name.
And Maraman is my last name.
I'm a simple guy. I have no desire to come up with some flashy nickname. Besides, I think using my initials is more professional.

Mine's pretty obvious. Navy because I am going into the navy after college. Intel because I will be training to become an Intelligence Officer. And 007 cause it seemed like it fit.
I was going to be phatcat625 but I'm bored with that name.

Apr 15, 2003, 01:16 AM
Well let's see here. My name is Alfred William Steineker IV, so my logins for different accounts (home machines, school accounts, unix accounts at old job) have all been some version of what I currently sport on the board. wsteineker was a lot nicer than awsteine so it stuck. I know it's bland as hell, but you asked. I wanted it to be TripMaster69, but I knew no one would EVER take me seriously, and I'm just not sure everyone would know it was a joke. :)
BTW, congrats on the avatar Navy. I'll be seeing you in the 500 club real soon. :)

Apr 15, 2003, 02:33 AM
my favorite band is (or at least was for a while) pavement, fronted by steve malkmus. it's a three part reference:
1. from the song "mercy snack; the laundromat"-- i'm chosen for a mercy snack / i'm regular, i'm treble kicked
2. from malkmus' music publishing company (name)= treble kicker music, bmi
3. it's trebblekicked because i can't spell.
the end.
bombensington
Apr 15, 2003, 02:38 AM
i used to have 2 kitties...bombay and kensington (i got bombay in the breakup, so now i just have her). anyway, when they would do naughty stuff (which was often), it got too long to say "bombay and kensington"...so we shortened it to bombensington.

I wanted to find an original name on my yahoo e-mail account, so I guess right with chewbacca+pits...Chewbacca, because, thats my pet name for my wife....I know, its a crappy name, but she's beautiful and looks nothing like the wookie...I just enjoy the juxtaposed aspect of it. And 'pits' because the word isn't used enough in our vernacular....

Apr 15, 2003, 02:59 AM
My first street bike was a Suzuki Bandit 400. Also around the same time I got internet access of my own for the first time somewhere around '93. Well I used Bandit as my handle for years and eventually it just became MacBandit. I've lucked out so far and have been able to use it almost everywhere I go without running into other people who got there first with it.

well, I was a advertising major who loves film. I tend to love thinking and I'm working hard at becoming a director, hence I am a "dreaming director"
I guess I wasn't dreaming too hard when I came up with my handle.

Well - being originally from New Zealand, I HAD to take the name of our national symbol - the Kiwi.
And because I'm a bit backward, I'm also known as an iwik - a "backwards" kiwi...
It's all rather sad, really...

quite dull this one - d for david and storey is my surname. I usually use tellin_storeys as dstorey is usually taken - a bad joke from the charlatans song tellin' stories and my surname, but dstorey was available on macrumors and poeple keep thinking I can't spell stories....

Ambrose Chapel
Apr 15, 2003, 07:04 AM
it's from Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much. Great film (at least the 50s version with Jimmy Stewart - He made an earlier version in the 40s I think). It also came up in the X-Files once, an homage to the film.
I don't want to give away what it refers to because that would be telling!
xjohn
Apr 15, 2003, 07:04 AM
When I signed up for AOL (way back in the beginning, when it was mac only!), I was a huge Monday Night Football fan. So, I chose the screenname 'MNFreak.'
Unfortunately, people kept greeting me in the chatrooms with "Hey, I'm from Minnesota, too!!"
That got annoying, so I decided to change my screenname to something simpler. I tried 'john,' but it was taken. I didn't want numbers added to my name, so I added an 'x', and went with 'xjohn.'
Kwyjibo
Apr 15, 2003, 07:15 AM
To simpsons fan mine is obvious, but to everyone else the simpson family was playing scrablle and bart had a W,j,y,i,o,b,k. which all seem like impossibl to wrk together. So Bart laid down Kwyjibo.
BART
K-W-Y-J-I-B-O... Kwyjibo.22 points... plus 50 points for using all my letters! Game's over, I'm outta here...
HOMER
Wait a minute, you little cheater -- you're not going anywhere until you tell me what a Kwyjibo is!
BART
Kwyjibo? Uh... a big, dumb, balding,
North American ape with no chin...
MARGE
And a short temper!
HOMER
Why you little!! (chases Bart)
BART
Uh oh, Kwyjibo on the loose!

That Lancia just gets better and better with age.....
It's a real shame that Lancia pulled out of world rallying because they'd undoubtedly be pushing Subaru for honours.... Lancia Delta HF Integrale evoluzione 8 has a certain ring to it doesn't it.... ;)
As for my screen name.... well I used to go by the name of Sissystarstar but people kept either laughing in my face when I was trying to give them my email address, or would simply laugh in my face....
So I changed it, I thought iGav had a certain ring to it, and it was easily explained.....
i = ignoramous, or idiot or whatever you think best suits.... heh
Gav = my name.....
Simplicity itself, and beautifully f*@king illustrated.... :p
I go by the name of 'Binky The Dancing Clown' on Hotline.... :p

At Penn State they use your initials and a semingly random number for email accounts. It was simple enough that I just kept using it (and it was never taken.)
I used to use NitrogenNarcosis, but I found someone else using it and it is too long for some sites...

Stelliform
Apr 15, 2003, 09:29 AM
I needed an alias around 10 years ago on AOL, so I started looking for words that were uncommon in a 1950's unabridged dictionary. Stelliform means star like, or star shaped. I just liked the name.
I used to own stelliform.com, but I let it lapse and I figured I would pick it up later if I wanted it. Some asian company purchased my old domain. :) Pretty funny if they think I let it lapse by mistake and I plan on buying it back. :D
Foxer
Apr 15, 2003, 09:37 AM
Foxer -- My last name is Fox, a name which practically begs for even people who just met me to give me a nickname (usually Foxy, uhhhhhghhh.) Well, in High School, back in the Pleistacine Age, my prom date and occassional girlfriend and her click called me Foxer. I always liked that one, but could never really get anyone else to use it since. Foxy, Fox Force 5, Fox, Chunckstyle, King Jimmy, Wombat, but never Foxer. Finally, a place where I can choose my own name.
Otherwise, in the Simpsons vein, I would have selected Tipsy McStagger.

My user name just came along... when iTools came out, I signed up as G4scott. I just thought of it as G-for-Scott. It's also my .Mac account name, and every other online thing.
My only problem will be after the G4 is extinct. My user name will mean no more. It will probably be a remembarance of the pains and troubles that motorola had caused to Apple...
I might come up with something new when the 970's come out. It just won't be 970Scott... It'll be something more generic...

:D
G5Scott? j/k. :D
P.S. Yes, I admit that I USED to like Star Trek. But that was a LOOOONNG time ago. Okay, and Yes, I admit that I actually went to that first ST:TNG Creation convention when it first launched. Stop twisting my arm! :D Mention Star Trek to me now and I cringe! :D

I've always had an interest in sharks, but that was a bit common. So I altered the spelling a bit to match the spelling of my last name (something Polish).
It seemed to fit with my style of lurking around for long periods of time, and just popping up occasionally with something to say... :)
mymemory
Apr 15, 2003, 12:50 PM
I had that nick for a long time since 1997. I wanted to have a nick to make people to think about it.
Mymemory came after I lost for 2nd time the HD of my powerbook at that time, the I realise that the real importatn thing about a computer was the information inside (my memories). Then that got togather with one of the final lines of Blade Runners when Harrison Ford realised that the replicant saved his life because his memories where unique.
I think that too and a lot. For example a year a go I went with my girlfriend for a weekend to some islands in the caribbean, the sand was white like the snow, the water transparent, just like the ads but better. We recorded all that in a tape, when we came back we watched the video and it was greate but some how the video was erased.
Now all those images are in my memory and in hers. Some day she will die or she will replace that with something else, so I would be the one with those memories in my head. Once I die those moment will disppear for ever.
That is why some one experienec is so important to me, you do not know where that person have been or what they learned. That is why memories are so important, people that forgets will make the same mistakes over and over.

They started calling me bousozoku, which is a Japanese biker gang member, from that time on. It's been a part of me since then. I'm not a person who fits into the well-defined categories of most societies. :D

From '92 to '98 I did not use Apples based on the fact that they discontinued my beloved IIGS, which I had blown about $4k on :(

Microserfs is a novel by Douglas Coupland chronicling the lives of a group of young programmers, told in diary form by lead geek Daniel. Disillusioned with life at Microsoft, they leave Seattle and relocate to Silicon Valley where they set up their own company developing a multimedia product called Oop! - a kind of virtual lego.
The beauty of it isn't so much in the plot as in the continual little comic observations about the computer industry, technology and life as a geek. It is showing its age slightly (as any technology book would) - it predates the Internet revolution by a year or so, dating from the time when everyone was scrambling to develop the next big interactive CD-ROM multimedia product - but this snapshot of computing history just adds to its charm...

My name is from one of the nicknames I have in my High School. I could go into how I got it, but that's for another day. Just for the fun of it, here's the rest of my nicknames: Yeti, Big Foot, Bill, Billicus, Billicus(pronounced as with spanish for the 'y' sound), Wide William, Lenghty Louie, Large Larry, Big Bill, and the list goes on and on...:D
Over Achiever
Apr 16, 2003, 05:53 PM
Lets see...over achiever. Seems self explainatory.
I'm a triple major, double minor in college.
Physics, Math, and Astrophysics majors...and biology and chemistry minors. Planning on going to grad school (get a PhD in astro) and going to med school and becoming an M.D.
Oh, and I'm not Over Achiever on AIM...somone else got that s/n before i did.

guess i'll tack mine in here.
My grandpa makes his own computers, and puts computers together for other people. he always used to rename "my computer" to "Gandalf."
when he made my first computer, i named mine "Shadowfax," having read Lord of the Rings not too long before. it kinda stuck, and then i ended up putting it everywhere, email, AIM SN (sh4d0wf4x because some loser took the normal form  ), and so on. wheee....
lmalave
Apr 16, 2003, 06:15 PM
Name's Leonardo Malave. lmalave is the handle I always try to go for, if it's available. Too hard to keep all the different emails and usernames straight otherwise. Luckily, I guess there aren't that many Malaves on the internet, relatively speaking, or at least not with first names that start with L. Easily got lmalave as an AOL and Yahoo handle. Pretty happy about that.
P.S. Biggest bonehead move ever: I had the malave.com domain and I lost it 'cuz I forgot to renew  For the love of god, don't ever let that happen to you, it's quite depressing. I guess I can still get leonardo.malave.name, but that's so lame compared to having malave.com. Oh well, I never did anything with it for the 5 years I had it anyway...

I tend to read things too fast. When I read lmalave's name too fast it looks like:
I'm a slave.
And then I fee bad for lmalave for no apparent reason. But that's just me! :D

Old name: crazy_will
Why? My really close friend call me it, due a long lost story that everyone here would find repulsive.
New: funkywhat2
Why? My S/N. Got it while watching a VH1 One-Hit Wonder special for the 8th time. "Funky", from Funkytown (the song). "What" from my constant asking of "what" because my hearing is so messed up from listening to my Beatles CDs really loud. "2" because "funkywhat" was taken.

Mac - because of the 'puter and it's more polite than "Mic" for an Irishman.
Porter - when I pass, I want to be rolled in a clean, white sheet; laid out upon the bed; with a bottle of whiskey at my feet and a barrel of porter at my head - Oh!
