i would get a dual 1.42 ghz powermac, standard 512 RAM, a 20" inch lcd screen, and applecare ($4250 total) and spend the rest of the balance on software and peripherals (adobe stuff and epson or hp printers and scanners)
my second choice, if i had to be mobile, would be a 15" inch tibook, standard 256 RAM, a 20" inch external lcd monitor, and applecare ($4050 total) and the rest on software and peripherals...i would get an extra 256 RAM stick and put it in myself (much cheaper than apple's RAM prices)
how would you guys spend your ten grand if you had to get a desktop? a laptop?

Is that 10K UK pounds or US dollars? As Apple's had about $5K out of me in the last 4 months I probably not bother with gear and go on a damn fine vacation with the money:D A 17" PB would be nice though

I'd still be waiting for the 970s myself, get the top of the line with 2 23" LCDs, a few extra harddrives, max ram and probably still have enough left over to get a 12" Powerbook.

That's my thought process. BUt I wouldn't get a laptop, I would
get a iPod, or tablet, or w/e lifestyle device apple is planning
on releasing soon enough. :)

ah, well, the iPod is fine, but its not all that much. You'd probably be able to pic one up relatively cheap if you were to buy all that, especially if you went to GeneralCybernetics :D
But the laptop is crucial, since there are times you need a decent portable computer, especially if you're doing photography, travelling and such. I have an older model TiPower book and its great. But the lifestyle is different between a laptop and desktop - and they both have a need for what I do.

Lets see...
Power Mac G4 Dual 1.42GHz w/2MB L3 per proc.
512MB DDR333 SDRAM (PC2700) - 1 DIMM
3x180GB Ultra ATA drive
Optical 1 - Apple SuperDrive
Optical 2 - Combo Drive (DVD/CD-RW)
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro w/128MB DDR
Apple Cinema HD Display (23" flat panel)
Apple Pro Keyboard - U.S. English
Mac OS - U.S. English
iPod - 20GB (Mac)
Apple Pro Speakers
.Mac Promotional Bundle + Ram because apple charges a fortune for it... = $6,696.95 + ram...
Then we have... an iBook... :D
256MB SDRAM (128MB built-in & 128MB SO-DIMM) + rip out extra ram and install much more...
40GB Ultra ATA drive
DVD-ROM/CD-RW Combo drive
Keyboard/Mac OS X - U.S. English
Mac OS X & Mac OS 9 included
ATI Mobility RADEON 7500 w/ 32MB VRAM
14.1-inch TFT XGA display =
$1,599.00 + ram = about $8,500
Then I'd get some software, lets see, every game I wanted, like ever... :p and whatelse... subwoofer, yes... um... the next VPC or Real PC (whichever is better).
That would be to about 9,300 I guess. With some extra money I'd save it (if possible) or not I'd go for some add-ons.

Honestly, I wouldn't be able to spend 10k on Apple stuff. I'd get a maxed out dual G4, big ass monitor, but I don't think it'd come to ten grand.
Now, 10k on car stuff or music on the other hand.... The drum set I want costs about that much :D

970 Powermac plus the largest solid state hard drive I could afford

I would wait for the 970s. Then I would get a fully loaded 970 with a 23" HD display. Then, I would probably get a 12" alubook. If there was any money left over, I would get an iPod.
