this is some true BS.
microsoft is screwing over thousands of people with their new xbox update.
this update turns a perfectly good brand new xbox, into a lemon!
i bought mine, turn it one, works fine...
asks me to do a crucial update over live, does it, reboots and goes to E 71 screen.
microsoft needs to get theire s*** together and fix this.

Yep, happened to my roommate and myself yesterday. See the Fall Update thread for what happened. We're gonna return it this morning and get another one and prey (IE NOT download the update as of yet). It worked for a friend of mine but I'm glad to see that we weren't the only ones.

I downloaded it and I've had no problems at all - yes, I really am telling the truth.
I believe Abulia's situation was identical to mine.

I updated yesterday and its working fine.
My 360 hasn't given me any trouble at all...almost makes you think it's not a Microsoft product :D

So it's officially fixed? Does anyone have a link to them saying it is so (from Microsoft)? I'm so paranoid to download it after what happened before.

yeah me ang gb are in the same boat.
i took back my errored xbox yesterday and got my new one.
i made an offline account,
and im skeptical to put my network cable into the back...
is it official, that i can take my xbox purchased yesterday, perform the update,
watch the 360 restart, and not recieve an E 71 error.
i dont wanna do this all over again.

From what I have directly heard... the boxes that are getting "Error 71", are all of the boxes that do not have the previous online update from spring of 06 on them yet (dubbed the "spring update"). Therefore, if you buy a brand new box, or even get a refurbished box, and you go online and apply the the current "fall update", you WILL get E71. If you have an older box, and have not been plugged into the internet yet, then when you log on, you will get the error.
I would wait till microsoft resolves this issue, and makes a public statement saying it has been resolved to go back online. Getting another box in the mail every few days and then immediatley going back on xbox live will just *** up another new or refurb xbox.
this seems to be the best explination.
i read this on the xbox forums

My roommate and I bit our lips, and downloaded the update. No problems whatsoever, and yeah, Dead Rising, quite a fun little game :)

I didn't know about this and picked up 360 last week, it did the upgrade and it's done. When I exchanged it at Best Buy and told them about the Upgrade, the CSR/Game practically took it apart, had this look...I knew he was thinking I probably MODDED it and things went wrong. LOL I'm one of the few that don't do this.
My exchange is still sealed and I'm afraid. LOL
Companies today are a joke! I feel like you have to, forced to buy Extended Warranties for everything!
