I've had this line from 'Choking Tara' by Guided By Voice coming to mind quite a bit lately.
- She fill empty space, I kind of need it that way
also from the same song.
- Shove me 'cause I'll just stay, like an ugly unwanted stray
Anyone else have a favorite, or lyrical line from a song that just sticks in their head.

I know everybody here wants you.
I know everybody here thinks he needs you.
I'll be waiting right here just to show you.
Let me show you that love can rise, rise just like embers.
Love can taste like the wine of the ages, babe.
And I know they all look so good from a distance,
Bit I tell you....I'm the one.
- everybody here wants you - Jeff Buckley
kiss me, please kiss me
but kiss me out of desire, babe, and not consolation
you know it makes me so angry 'cause I know that in time
I'll only make you cry, this is our last goodbye
- Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley
my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It's never over, all my riches for her smiles
when I slept so soft against her...
It's never over,
all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It's never over, she is the tear
that hangs inside my soul forever
Maybe I'm just too young to keep good love
from going wrong
Oh... lover you should've come over...
'cause it's not too late...
- Lover you should've come over -Jeff Buckley
But now I'll tell you something
From my heart beats for you deep inside
But never be a burden
And my love for you will never die,
never die, never die, never die, never die
But if Jesus comes to take your hand
I won't let go, I won't let go
- run wild - new order
Come on, baby, Light my fire
Come on, baby, Light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
- Light my fire - The Doors
Then one fine mornin' she puts on a New York station
She couldn't believe what she heard at all
She started dancin' to that fine fine music
You know her life was saved by Rock 'n' Roll...saved by rock 'n' roll
rock 'n' roll - velvet underground
Sometimes I am overcome just thinkin' 'bout it
Makin' love in the green grass
Behind the stadium with you
My brown eyed girl
You, my brown eyed girl
- brown eyed girl - van morrison
I wanna hold her wanna hold her tight
Get teenage kicks right through the night
- Teenage kicks - The Undertones
I don’t want to be a fat Western pig
Consuming everything in sight
I don’t want to crush you
With my military might
All I really want is you
All I really want is you
- All I want is you - John Squire

Man. That Buckley lyric STILL does it to me.
I'd also have to add:
" Well, maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew ya
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah"
-L. Cohen (of course, famously done by Mr. B, the prior and the latter as well)
One of my FAVORTIE writers of all time has to be Robert Smith. So poetic yet plainspoken and perfectly pertinent.
There's some "lesser heard" jems like Jupiter Crash, which SO perfectly compares astronomy to relationships you WISH lasted a bit longer:
"THE NIGHT TURNS AS I TRY TO EXPLAIN
IRRESISTABLE ATTRACTION AND ORBITAL PLANE
"OR MAYBE IT'S MORE LIKE A MOTH TO A FLAME?"
SHE BRUSHES MY FACE WITH HER SMILE
"FORGET ABOUT STARS FOR A WHILE... "
AS SHE MELTS...
MEANWHILE MILLIONS OF MILES AWAY IN SPACE
THE INCOMING COMET BRUSHES JUPITER'S FACE
AND DISAPPEARS AWAY WITH BARELY A TRACE...
and of course a little Baudelaire Insrpiration from Robert, from "how Beautiful you are":
I turned to look at you
To read my thought upon your face
And gazed so deep into your eyes
So beautiful and strange
Until you spoke
And showed me understanding is a dream
"I hate these people staring
Make them go away from me!"
The father's eyes said "Beautiful!
How beautiful you are!"
The boy's eyes said
"How beautiful! She glitters like a star!"
The child's eyes uttered nothing
But quiet and utter joy
And stilled my heart with sadness
For the way we are...
And this is why I hate you
And how I understand
That no-one ever knows or loves another
Or loves another"
And of course there's just utter elation that can come from his lyrics:
"Spinning on that dizzy edge
I kissed her face and kissed her head
And dreamed of all the different ways I had
To make her glow
"Why are you so far away?" she said
"Why won't you ever know that I'm in love with you?
That I'm in love with you?"
You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Strange as angels
Dancing in the deepest oceans
Twisting in the water
You're just like a dream..."
Of course, some of Robert's Contemporaries could kick it to, Like Morrissey:
"If a double decker bus crashes into us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die"
A line i STILL think should be in every valentine's day card. Heehee
And there's one more, which I think is POSSIBLY the FINEST song lyric ever written, and maybe THE MOST romantic song. Learn to play it if you play guitar. and play for your girl. You'll see what I mean. :)
It's "Northern Sky" by nick drake. And i SUGGEST you grab this song ASAP if you haven't heard it. amazing:
"I never felt magic crazy as this
I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand
Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
But now you're here
Brighten my northern sky.
I've been a long time that I'm waiting
Been a long that I'm blown
I've been a long time that I've wandered
Through the people I have known
Oh, if you would and you could
Straighten my new mind's eye.
Would you love me for my money
Would you love me for my head
Would you love me through the winter
Would you love me 'til I'm dead
Oh, if you would and you could
Come blow your horn on high.
I never felt magic crazy as this
I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand
Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
But now you're here
Brighten my northern sky."
It's the tune thats playing in the ice rink at the end of Serendipity with JOhn Cusak and Kate Beckinsale.... John Cusak has some GREAT taste in music.
Gosh. I could go on with lyrics-- Elvis Costello, Belle and Sebastian, Depeche Mode (underrated for sure!), Mark Kozelek and Red House Painters....sheesh.
There's a great dynamic in Red House Painters songs-- he'll try and match a mood created lyrically with the music. As oppposed to just fitting a melody. He'll try to make the melody evoke something visual from the lyric. It's very magical when it works (often...) but RHP is depressing and sometimes tough to listen to.
Man. Lyrics. Music. Awesome. :)

Some of my favorite lyrics are from the Smiths. The words on their own are pretty funny in a morose kind of way, but then add the music and Morrissey's voice it becomes pretty whiney to some.
I smelt the last ten seconds of life
I crashed down on the crossbar
and the pain was enough to make
a shy, bald buddhist reflect
and plan a mass-murder
who said I lied to her?

I have alot of somewhat obscure quotes
"They're pushing these children for all the wrong reasons
So far man you're crushing down their spirits
Your pushing these children for all the wrong reasons
So far man you're crushing down their spirits
Suffocate, emancipate, turn their backs and walk away eventually, eventually " -Lucky boys Confusion- www.luckyboys.com
"The times change
And minds rearrange
You walked away cuz
You started feelin' strange
You knew from the start
That this wasn't for you
But your feelings can control
The things that you do
That you do"

I think with Jeff it's not just what he say's, it the passion and the way he say it...the way he pauses for effect. Just like how he he pauses before he sings I'm the one. Really sound like he means it. Same with the lyric you like.
The cure are great too...a lot of good lyrics, I like the i'm in love...with you one, and friday I'm in love. I've got a couple of nick drake albums...ironic that he died a lonely guy after the quote from a lyric that you gave.

my favorite lyrics:
The Beach Boys
"Good Vibrations"
I, I love the colorful clothes she wears
And the way the sunlight plays upon her hair
I hear the sound of a gentle word
On the wind that lifts her perfume through the air
I'm pickin' up good vibrations
She's giving me excitations...
New Order
"Blue Monday"
How does it feel to treat me like you do?
When you've your hands upon me
And told me who you are
I thought I was mistaken
I thought I heard your words
Tell me, how do I feel
Tell me now, How do I feel
hope you like it :)

"And all you touch and all you see, is all your life will ever be" -Pink Floyd
I close my eyes, only for a moment, and the moment's gone
All my dreams, pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind, all they are is dust in the wind
Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do, crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
Don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away, all your money won't another minute buy

Led Zep:------------------
There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven.
There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.
There's a feeling I get when I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who standing looking.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.
And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
And it makes me wonder.
Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.

Is she really gonna take him home tonight?

Blood rack barbed wire

I do remember one thing.
It took hours and hours but..
by the time I was done with it,
I was so involved, I didn't know what to think.
I carried it around with me for days and days..
playing little games
like not looking at it for a whole day
and then.. looking at it.
to see if I still liked it.
I did.
I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat..
The more I look at it,
the more I like it.
I do think it's good.
The fact is..
no matter how closely I study it,
no matter how I take it apart,
no matter how I break it down,
It remains consistant.
I wish you were here to see it.
I like it.

The dangerous kitchen
If it aint't one thing it's another
In the middle of the night when you get home
The bread things are all dry 'n' scratchy
The meat thing
Where the cats ate trough the paper
The can things with the sharp little edges
That can cut your fingers when you're not looking
The soft little things on the floor that you step on
They can all be DANGEROUS
Sometimes
The milk can hurt you
(If you put it on your cereal
Before you smell the plastic container)
And the stuff in the strainer
Has a mind of its own
So be very careful
In the dangerous kitchen
When the night time has fallen,
And the roaches are crawlin'
In the kitchen of danger
You can feel like a stranger
The bananaes are black
The got flies in the back
And also the chicken
In the dish with the foil
Where the cream is all clabbered
And the salad is frightful
Your return in the evening
Can be less than delightful
You must walk very careful
You must not lean against it
It can get on you clothing
It can follow you in
As you walk to the bedroom
And you take all your clothes off
While you're sleeping
It crawls off
It gets in your bed
It could get on your face then
It could eat your complexion
You could die from the danger
Of the dangerous kitchen
Who the **** wants to clean it?
It's disgusting and dirty
The sponge on the drainer
Is stinky and squirty
If you squeeze it when you wipe up
What you get on your hands then
Could un-balance your glands and
Make you blind or whatever
In the dangerous kitchen
At my house tonight
Props to anyone that knows these songs already :)

more specifically, N.W.A., but who's counting? ;)
anyway, there are so many good lyrics out there. my favorites are the ones where the whole song is just too incredible to pick out only a few lines...
a few i think fit:

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say

this is a sweet thread!
Pete Yorn, "All at Once"
They're all liars in the back room
You watch them all go down
They can tell you what you want to hear
But they will never stick around.
So don't say nothin' 'bout the old house
'Cos i burned it to the ground.
That song is gorgeous. Get Day i Forgot by him if you haven't.
Counting Crows, "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" (probably my favorite song ever)
Well I woke up in mid afternoon, 'cos that's when it all hurts the most.
I dreamed I never know anyone at the party, and I'm always the host;
Well if dreams are like movies, then memories are films about ghosts:
You can never escape, you can only move south down the coast.
I am an idiot walking a tightrope of fortune and fame,
I am an acrobat swinging trapezes through circles of flame.
If you've never stared off into the distance, then your life is a shame
And though I'll never forget your face, sometimes I can't remember my name.
Hey, Mrs. Potter, don't cry
Hey, Mrs. Potter, I know why
But, hey, Mrs. Potter, won't you talk to me?
Well there's a piece of Maria in every song that I sing,
And the price of a memory is the memory of the sorrow it brings;
And there is always one last light to turn out and one last bell to ring,
And the last one out of the circus has to lock up everything,
Or the elephants will get out and forget to remember what you said,
Oh and the ghost of the tilt-o-whirl will linger inside of your head,
Oh and the Ferris wheel junkies will spin there forever instead.
When I see you, a blanket of stars covers me in my bed.
Hey, Mrs. Potter, don't go, I said
Hey, Mrs. Potter, I don't know, but
Hey, Mrs. Potter, won't you talk to me
Well all the blue light reflections that color my mind when I sleep,
And the lovesick rejections that accompany the company I keep;
All the razor perceptions that cut just a little too deep--
Hey, I can bleed as well as anyone, but I need someone to help me sleep.
So I throw my hand into the air, and it swims in the beams
It's just a brief interruption of the swirling dust sparkle jet stream.
Well I know I don't know you and you're probably not what you seem,
Aw, but I'd sure like to find out,
So why don't you climb down off that movie screen?
Hey, Mrs. Potter, don't turn
Hey, Mrs. Potter, I burn for you
Hey, Mrs. Potter, won't you talk to me?
When the last king of Hollywood shatters his glass on the floor
And orders another
While I wonder what he did that for.
That's when I know that I have to get out, 'cos I have been there before.
So I give up my seat at the bar and I head for the door. Yeah.
We drove out to the desert just to lie down beneath this bowl of stars
We stand up in the Palace, like it's the last of the great pioneer town bars.
Aw, we shout out these songs against the clang of electric guitars;
Well, you can see a million miles tonight,
But you can't get very far.
Aw, you can see a million miles tonight,
But you can't get very far.
Hey, Mrs. Potter, I won't touch and
Hey, Mrs. Potter, it's not much but
Hey, Mrs. Potter, won't you talk to methat song is so rich in imagery!
Radiohead, "Punch-up at a Wedding"
No no no no no no
No no no no no no
No no no no no no
No no no no no no
No no no no no no
No no no no no no
No no no no no no
I don't know
Why you bother;
Nothing's ever good enough to you
(By the way) I was there;
And it wasn't like that.
You've come here just to start a fight--
You had to piss on our parade,
You had to shred our big day,
You had to ruin it for all concerned
In a drunken punch-up at a wedding, yeah...
Hypocrite, Opportunist--
Don't infect me with your poison.
A bully in
A china shop,
When I turn around you'll stay frozen to the spot.
You had the pointless snide remarks
Of hammer headed sharks;
The pot will call the kettle back,
It's a drunken punch-up at a wedding, yeah...
Oh, Oh, Oh

"There’s a stranger speaks outside her door
Says take what you can from your dreams
Make them as real as anything
It’d take the work out of the courage
But she says, “Please
There’s a crazy man that’s creeping outside my door,
I live on the corner of Grey Street and the end of the world”
There’s an emptiness inside her
And she’d do anything to fill it in
And though it’s red blood bleeding from her now
It’s more like cold blue ice in her heart
She feels like kicking out all the windows
And setting fire to this life
She could change everything about her using colors bold and bright
But all the colors mix together to grey" - DMB - Grey Street
"Bartender please, the wine that's drinking me
Came from the vine that strung Judas from the Devil's Tree." DMB - Bartender

I'm waiting for the night to fall
I know that it will save us all
When everything's dark
Keeps us from the stark reality
I'm waiting for the night to fall
When everything is bearable
And there in the still
All that you feel
Is tranquility
_
There is a star in the sky
Guiding my way with its light
And in the glow of the moon
Know my deliverance will come soon
_
There is a sound in the calm
Someone is coming to harm
I press my hands to my ears
It's easier here just to forget fear
_
And when I squinted
The world seemed rose-tinted
And angels appeared to descend
To my surprise
With half-closed eyes
Things looked even better
Than when they were opened
_
Been waiting for the night to fall
Now everything is bearable
And here in the still
All that you hear
Is tranquility

my favorite stanza:
confined to a small midwestern airport
pacing around in these ungaining shoes.
a product of the factory outlet mall
the local press gave glowing reviews
and it is said-
when the moon shadow hits you
at 10,000 miles an hour
feel your pulses to start screaming.
i'd like to believe this is so
makes me feel good to know
that there are some things that wouldn't let me down
i survey all the fallen stars in this hotel sized world
and wonder what it would be like
to be impressed beyond belief

three of my favorite quick hitters:
"and it's such a sad old feeling
the hills are soft and green
it's memories that i'm stealing
but you're innocent when you dream"

"don't find fake reasons to hate us.
some people get it. much more need it"
-Yes, I am too. But who am i really?

Don't stop never give hold your head high and reach the top
show the whole world what you have got
bring it all back to me.
Damn inspirational stuff that is.
The whole darkside of the moon album!
Alot of Trent Reznors stuff and Roots Manuva.
:)
Ok there's gonna be errors in this but here goes it.
And now it seems as if we are use to this dredgry, we made our beds and now we hate where these beds be, took nothing at all to part this red sea, Im a shackeled child singing the good song of freedom, they've got no pride they interupt our breathing, tear drops dropping for the pain of the world, my best friend died when she was just a young girl, left me here to fend for myself, now the pain never leaves we just learn to cope and when the devil needs hanging we tighten the rope and shout bull, lets put an end to this bull, same thing, how many years before we practice what we preach, how many years before we truley clench the peak only to find that theres no honey on moon, official goon with the unofficial croon.
I'm all things to all men, all of the women all the children, just say when and I'll take you to me Tardis, who's the hardest who's the hardest.

from Visions of Johanna
by Bob Dylan,
Inside the museums Infinity goes up on trial
Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while.
But even Mona Lisa must have had them highway blues,
you can tell by the way she smiles
See the primitive wallflower freeze.
When the jelly-faced women all sneeze,
Hear the one with the mustache say "Jeeze, I can't find my knees."
Jewels and binoculars hag from the head of the mule,
But these visions of Johanna they make it all seem so cruel.

China Cat Sunflower
By the Grateful Dead
Look for a while at the China Cat sunflower,
Proud walking jingle in the midnight sun.
Copperdome bodhi drip a silver kimono,
Like a crazy quilt stargown through a dream night wind.
Crazy cat peekin' through a lace bandanna,
Like a one-eyed Cheshire, like a diamond-eye jack.
A leaf of all colors plays a golden-string fiddle,
To a double-E waterfall over my back.
Comic book colors on a violin river Cryin' Leonardo,
Words from out a silk trombone.
I rang a silent bell, beneath a shower of pearls,
In the eagle-winged palace of the Queen Chinee.

Fear Factory- Timelessness
I've felt darkness closing in on me
Chilling shadows surrounding me
I've had the poison leak into my skin
And it corroded my heart away
Bled away
Cut away
Dark night of my soul...
very good song and an entrance piece-
There comes a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you cannot take part; you cannot even tacitly take part. You've got to put your bodies upon the gears, upon the wheels, and the gears and all the apparatus, and you have to make it stop. And you have to make it clear to the people who own it, and to the people who run it, that until you are free their machine will be prevented from running at all. -Mario Savio

I woke up early on my born day, I'm twenty years of blessing
The essence of adolescent leaves my body now I'm fresh in
My physical frame is celebrated cause I made it
One quarter through life some God-ly like thing created
Got rhymes 365 days annual plus some
Load up the mic and bust one, cuss while I puffs from
my skull cause it's pain in my brain vein money maintain
Don't go against the grain simple and plain
When I was young at this I used to do my thing hard
Robbin foreigners take they wallets they jewels and rip they green cards
Dipped to the projects flashin my quick cash
and got my first piece of ass smokin blunts with hash
Now it's all about cash in abundance, niggaz I used to run with
is rich or doin years in the hundreds
I switched my motto -- instead of sayin **** tomorrow
That buck that bought a bottle could've struck the lotto
Once I stood on the block, loose cracks produce stacks
I cooked up and cut small pieces to get my loot back
Time is Illmatic keep static like wool fabric
Pack a four-matic that crack your whole cabbage
